Singer projects from the Antique Mall: 31-15 and 15-90?
Constabulary replied to PJ234's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Agree with Wiz. I´m the last who won´t rescue an old cast iron machine as long as it is worth the time and money (well time is not a factor when you like what you do) but either one is not worth investing money in. I think you can find complete Singer 31 heads for less money than you have to invest into parts for it - and yet you don´t even know what condition the shuttle race is in. I would guess someone took off all the parts for a reason f.i. took em from a "bad" machine to repair a "not so bad" machine. If a Singer 31 is what you want I would remove all good prats and keep them as spares for a possible other / complete Singer 31 machine. But thats just my opinion - if you want to restore it then go ahead but I honestly wouldn´t. -
You can buy 441 clones from Hightex in Germany from Sieck.de or Frank Brunnet http://hightex-germany.de/ No import taxes since the UK (still) is EU member

What to look for in a used fur machine?
Constabulary replied to DrmCa's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
AFAIK fur machines came with different stitch types and in 1 and 2 thread variant - probably more but thats what I have seen so far. A while agon I bought a Singer 46K46 (2 thread + adjustable stitch length) but I haven set it up yet. Mine had a broken looper tip but I was able to find a good used looper. So not much experience here but you should know how a functional looper for the machines looks like. -
Depends on what you consider as walking foot. Walking foot is not a "firm term" I would say. Though MOST leather workers and dealers consider triple feed (combined top feed, bottom feed and needle feed) as walking foot. However you sometimes even find a plain top feed machine (like Singer 29K) as walking foot machine or even jump foot machines because a foot is moving / jumping (kind of walking) back and forth. Top + bottom feed machines (w/o needle feed) can be found described as walking foot machines too. So the term "Walking Foot" can be misleading. Even the term compound feed can be misleading - I have seen the term compound feed in needle + bottom feed machine manuals as well as in triple feed machine manuals. I think triple feed or unison feed describes a machine with 3 feeding mechanisms best. I think unison feed is a JUKI term. (my 2 cents) So what comes to my mind are the Singer 111 and Singer 211 (however - both come in a triple feed and needle + bottom feed version - so check the subclasses!!!). The much heavier Singer 144w machines also have unison / triple feed.

Singer 31-15 Worn Tension Release Lever
Constabulary replied to Ogoki's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
I don't think there should be a tension release while sewing. I do not recall a single machine of my present or past machines in this class that had this "feature". But I´m probably wrong. But to me it makes no sense. Only because it´s shown in a YT video doesn´t it right. FI - often people in YT Videos thread their machines the wrong way so only because they do it on YT makes it not right. If your release lever it worn and doesn to release tension when lifting the foot you can use a longer tension release pin (the one inside the tension unit) made from bicycle spoke or similar. -
I had to reduce the file size so quality is not as good as the original file Singer 45K Descriptions of Subclasses.pdf Singer 45K Instructions Manual - User Guide (1).pdf

All standard 29K have the same (small) hook - the one for the 100 years old 29K3 is the same as for the 29K51 from the 1930´s and later model 29K71 and so forth - there is a larger hook too but as I said its larger and will never fit your machine. You have to look for an original hook and that pretty much is a challenge. To said it with WIZ´s words - "They are made out of unoptanium". The rattling sound is a bit "unhealthy" but thats probbaly you have no shuttle driver installed. -
KInd of - chewing fingernails... I´m down to the bones now... Since in Down Under sewing machines are bit more pricey I think you have a something to increase your pension a little bit. I´m curious - do you have a list with model numbers?

There are some sort repair books in German language called: "Der Nähmaschinenfachmann" by Wilhelm Renters. You can download them here: https://www.occaphot-ch.com/bernina-original-service-manuals/ They are not only about repairs but also give a lot of instructions and explain everything that has to do with sewing.

There may be reasons for a hand cracked stitcher but for $1295 I would rather save my pennies and buy a fully setup Cowboy 3200 but of course depends on your purposes. http://www.tolindsewmach.com/cb3200.html

Patcher singer 29k51 upper tension problem
Constabulary replied to Akko's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Don´t know. Or replace the spring if it has burrs or a rough end (or just smoothen it) Or try the spring from your other patcher maybe that helps. The spring remained the same for a century or more. -
Patcher singer 29k51 upper tension problem
Constabulary replied to Akko's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
usually there is a 1mm felt or leather washer between the bottom tension disc and the head casting - that thin washer rises the tension discs a bit and could solve the thread hanging - check if it the washer is present -
So I guess you solved it - what was the problem?

Patcher singer 29k51 upper tension problem
Constabulary replied to Akko's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
no used machine is like the other - I would try to increase the bottom tension or shorten the upper tension spring by 1 or 2 coils if you cannot find other "faults". Both are simple tasks and will not hurt trying. -
Check your tension unit there is probably the "tension release piece" missing or it´s rod is broken of or worn. Just a guess... If it is the tension unit that is causing the problem new tension units are cheap on Ebay https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2053587.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xsinger+107+tension.TRS0&_nkw=singer+107+tension&_sacat=0 - OR - Could be that the TU just sticks out a bit too far. Loosen the set screw that holds the TU in place push it with your thumb into the casting and tighten the screw again.

Patcher singer 29k51 upper tension problem

or bottom tension too low (worn tension spring on shuttle?) or the shuttle has a grove under the tension spring (worn out by the thread) you can also try shortening the upper tension spring. Post pictures of your thread path. -

These "Colibri" / Patent Elastic type patcher have been sold by many Co. in Germany who often just relabeled them. You can find the same patcher with many different Mfg. names on them - just like the Chinese sewing machines nowadays. Yours (I guess) is made by CLAES, the auto bobbin winder is pretty distinguishing. If I recall correctly CLAES & FLENTJES (as a manufacturer) only had this type of bobbin winder. But I´m not 100% sure - there are just too many with sometimes just minor differences. To get an idea check out this website - maybe you find one similar to yours: https://schiffmann-orthopaedie.de/fussorthopaedie-beckingen-merzig-lebach/antike-schuhmacher-naehmaschinen/ -
Are you sure you want to use 1mm thread and a 360 needle on 2x 4oz leather? You know that 1mm thread and 360 needle is one of the freakin heaviest combination you can find, right? A 360 needle is approx 3.6mm thick - thats literally a nail! You need an extra heavy duty sewing machine for this needle and thread combination and with $200 budget you barely scratch the surface of the price range for these machines. I have added a picture of a 280 needle (I don´t have ever seen a 360 needle) and 100 needle (metric) so you have an idea where you come from and where you think you want to go to. For 2x 4oz leather you probably need a 120 needle and 30 thread (metric) but 1mm threads and 360 needle is not what you need for sewing 2x 4oz leather. I would recommend a vintage Singer 111 type triple feed / walking foot sewing machine or maybe a Singer 111 with needle feed machine works for you already. But for $200 you will probably not find a machine of this type or it is very worn and you have to put some $ into it before it properly sews. These machines usually can handle up to 140 needles and 138 thread. You may find one on craigslist but don´t expect too much for $200. I honestly would recommend that you contact a dealer for leather sewing machines like Toledo Sewing Machines and he will tell you what what needle and thread and especially what type of machine you need. That may help you: https://www.superiorthreads.com/education-thread-for-sewing-on-leather

#1 and #2 are issues you will have with any type of patcher machine. This is not only a Claes "problem" (well not really a problem). Patchers are machines made for repairing things. They are not really production machines. All patchers have just a top feed (material is moved forward by a toothed presser foot) other feeding system are technically impossible for patcher machines because of the 360° rotating foot. The 30 (or 3) is just a subclass for the largest available hook but not the model number. Model numbers for CLAES patchers are 201, RPX, 200, 8345 and 8346.
