Using Mod Podge is an old trick in the sewing world to control fraying. I have also viewed a few leather working videos on youtube that shows how they use it which lead me to trying it. I use it myself on leather pieces that are just impossible to burnish, as well as on veg tan projects that I want a super shine on the edge and it works great. There is also a product on the market that is designed for the leather world (the name escapes me right now) but I haven't tried it because Mod Podge is pretty cheap and it does the same thing. Patent Infringement: Shotgun Concho Dog Collar
veedub3 replied to HellcatLeathers's topic in Patterns and Templates
I just saw the email as well and I did have a good laugh. Didn't the poster say they contacted TandY? -
That is pretty cool!

Thanks, I do have a belt sander, and I was going to send the hubby out for some polish compound and see if he can clean them up a bit. He did use a file on one of them to sharpen the edge and with one strike it went right through the 3oz leather, so I think they will be fine once I sharpen them. Karina

Thanks for posting the list. I will definitely have to take a look and maybe give them a test drive. Karina -
I got mine about a week ago, and when I saw them, my thought was that they wouldn't cut melted butter and they wouldn't. I only tested one, and with three strikes with the maul it wouldn't even cut through 3oz leather. I also knew that if I cleaned them up and had them sharpened they would do what I needed and I am sure they will even though I haven't done that yet. I like how you cleaned them up billymac. What did you use? I was looking for a shop to drop mine off at and have them cleaned up and sharpened, but if it is something my hubby can tackle at home I will let him have at it. I had mine shipped to Panama and they arrived in about 9 days. Karina

Patent Infringement: Shotgun Concho Dog Collar
veedub3 replied to HellcatLeathers's topic in Patterns and Templates
This guy is a joke! He couldn't possibly think he has a patent on any and every leather strap made with bullet conchos on it. Not to mention, he did not start his patent process until 2011, and it was not approved until March 2013; use in commerce would supercede this as I am sure dog collars with bullet conchos were in the market place looooooong before he started his patent process. All one would have to do is show the sale of a dog collar with a bullet concho on it before his patent was approved and there would be nothing he could do about it. I am amazed they even approved a patent on this. If I worked in a law firm I would definitely ask the question to be sure, just curious, but why have you not done that yet? Personally I think this guy is full of it. Karina -
Leatherworking Handbook By Valerie Michael: $80-$1169?
veedub3 replied to Dennis Lanigan's topic in Resources
It's not out of print, you just have to look around, I got one back in February 2013 for $18.95 including the shipping which was brand new still in the plastic wrapper, which was the 2012 version. If I remember correctly I got mine from Books A Million. I too saw the crazy prices they had on Amazon, which is why I started looking elsewhere for it, and I was lucky enough to find it for a decent price. Karina -
Patent Infringement: Shotgun Concho Dog Collar

I looked at the attached image on his patent and I took a look at yours on your site. I guess one can say they are similar but to me that is in no way infringement. Yours have and additional element. Depending on the type of patent he holds, one can take a product and improve upon it without infringement which would include for example, the additional element, a wider band, etc. I think you responded in the proper manner, although being a hobbyist or doing them one by one by hand does not matter, (you only have to sell one), I too would have requested detailed information on his product. When he made the statement "we can take care of this amicably" I immediately thought that this guy is just trying to dupe people that are not knowledgeable on the subject, but that's just me. When/if he contacts you again, tell him that you requested the detailed information on his product so that your Attorney may review it, just to see what response you get. I would then contact an IP Attorney, (usually they will give you a free phone consultation) and see what he says. Good Luck with it all! Karina -
When you said the Galaxy was big as a fridge I thought that was funny and didn't realize how big it was until I was shipped the Galaxy 4 from Sprint. WOW this thing is huge compared to my last smartphone. Now it is time for me to make a case for it. I have the otter box for it but that just makes it even larger with all that armor. Hope my case is as nice as yours. Karina

Adobe's New Subscription Policy On Software
veedub3 replied to cem's topic in All About Us and Off Topic
Haven't heard of this yet (am out of the Country) so I will definitely have to read up on it. I rely heavily on Photoshop for my photography and web design business and currently I have every version since CS3 up to the current version of Adobe's Master Collection and if I have to go to a subscription only service I think I will forever stick with the latest version I have which is CS6. I use several laptops and desktops in my work and a few of my computers are still loaded with CS4 which works perfectly for what I need so CS6 may just be the last version I will ever use because I highly doubt I will pay for a monthly subscription. I would really hate to have my hands tied like that. They have gotten a lot of money from me over the years and I was a ware of when they launched the subscription plans, which I thought was great for those that maybe could not afford the entire suites, but forcing everyone to go that route is definitely about the money. Pure Greed, although I am sure they are saying it is because of the piracy. Karina -
ROFL...I thought that was pretty funny as well. (Still laughing )

Perhaps A Little Off-Topic: Flying With Leather Tools
veedub3 replied to KCrimini's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
I haven't flown with tools in my carry on, but knowing how crazy TSA can get, I would suggest checking them just to be safe. Never know when you might run into one that is having a bad day and end up loosing your stuff. I live part time in the US and part time in Central America and I have to bring items back and forth all the time and it is just less of a hassle to put any times that may be construed as a weapon in my checked luggage. Don't leave it up to them to interpret if it is a weapon or not as it will never be in the customers favor. When I return to the States next month, I will have at least 6 rubber maid containers filled to the brim with my tools and the rest of my crap, and it is always easier to just check them all. Good luck with the move!! Karina -
I got some of the acetate from Springfiled Leather. I think is cost $5 a sheet. I also found some at my local Hobby Lobby store for $3.68 a sheet and with the 40% coupon it came out even less.

Sorry but but don't waste your money on a patent. if you buy Angelus leather dyes, the carton has perforated cut outs in the rear that you sit the dye in which keeps the the dye from being accidentally spilled. I am sure you can easily do the same with the carton that Fiebings come in. Just a thought. Karina

Glad you didn't have any issues. Out of 8 sides of veg tan, I think about 30% was stained. I did managed to cover the stain on the iPad case I posted above with back dye with success so all is not lost. I will just have quite a few black items being made. But surely a lesson learned for me. Karina

Thanks for your response. I believe you are correct. I went to Tandy yesterday and was told because the leather has oils and waxes it should not be stored next to veg tan leather as the oils may/will stain the untreated leather. As a newbie, I was not aware of this and I have about 8 sides of different leathers, including Herman Oak, WC, Weavers and other suppliers and the Utility leather stained just about all of them. The 3/4 oz Herman Oak was the worst. I did reach out to my customer just to see how she was enjoying her purchase and she was overjoyed so I assumed it was not affected. This was truly a lesson learned so from now on all different leathers will be stored separately. Karina

A New Ipad Case
veedub3 replied to cheepo63's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Very Nice, I love the design and the color! Karina -
I made myself a leather iPad case from 5oz veg tan leather and left it natural. I can't remember if I did anything to it other than lightly oiling it with pure neasfoot oil. A few weeks later I started on a nook case for my niece out of a Utility side from Tandy. I had to get back to work so I sat the leather work aside for about a week. (Not realizing I placed the Utility leather on top of my finished iPad case) When I picked it back up yesterday, the Utility side left a stain on the iPad case. The iPad case is mine and I am just going to dye it all black to cover the stains but I started freaking out because i made a bag for a customer out of the same Utility side. Is this stuff going to stain my customer garments or anything she put inside of it, or was it simply a reaction with the veg tan leather? (Pics Below) The first pic is both pieces of leather (Veg tan and the Oily Utility Leather), and the second is a close up of the stains it left after trying to clean it with a mix of denatured alcohol, distilled water, and white vinegar which did nothing. Thanks for your help! Karina

I spoke with Bob a few days ago about buying a used machine. I called and he picked right up and we spoke in depth regarding my needs, so they are definitely not out of business. Karina
