Hi There, what machine are you using? i suppose you have tried with a bigger needle??
-
Yeah! if you want to see the model here it is. the model D barrel-arm ca 1870. it had the largest shuttle in the world at that time and in 1876 was the best machine in the world for shoe and leather work! (according to this article).this was up for sale on ebay france for €1000. http://www.sewalot.com/elias_howe.htm

Sorry dude, didn´t catch that one?? could you send a couple of pictures of your machine?
-
In the pictures the feed dog has big flat spots, adjusting the height wont fix it i reckon. unless you file them to a point again and then you will possibly have to widen the elongated hole underneath on the bottom side of the feed dog. the other option is get someone to TIG weld the top of the feet and then file them down again to the original height. you might even find some new feed dogs somewhere on the net?? but you will probably have to change the needle plate also as two rows of teeth are probably not out there for the class 17 machines. http://stores.ebay.com/SHARP-SEWING-SUPPLIES/_i.html?_fsub=439427819

Here you go. http://dixiesewingmachine.tzo.com/MANUALS/SINGERPARTS/17-1%20-%2017-30.pdf not much else out there?

You are all missing the obvious!! If you want no noise and total control then get back to treadle power! then you will hear the needle cut the leather each time.
-
??? did you mean 45k93 Kat sue??? the roller foot seems better for sewing curves, easier to maneuver than feet.
-
Nice one frank, i am sure it will last for another 100 yrs!. regards jimi.
-
sorry, i will let you got on with your work! looks tricky trying to get it fit right? the old and the new don´t like each other somtimes??
-
Katariinaaaaa! so what happened with your back stitches in the end? perfecto or no perfecto?
-
Great to know frank, thanks. that is what i was expecting from one class or another of the 45ks. could not get anybody to confirm this, now i know to be on the look out for one over this side of the pond. regards jimi.

Thanks for the offer frank, but I don`t have a spare €530 unfortunately. and it does look like a good upgrade from a 45k25. i am sure someone will snap it up (someone who likes the old machines) and keep it going another 100 years! how does it handle with the top feed only? you would need the feet with the points, right??

Nice one, and good luck frank. regards jimi

Pfaff 335 Manual For Older Version Needed
jimi replied to CaroCaro's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Hi John, i have put the binder setup on and taken a few pictures. it looks like the same setup as i have basically apart from the binding tape. i have used some thin leather cut to 20mm wide as marked on the binder attachment. this feed dog is generic and the needle is right up against the right hand side and i don´t have any more room either to move it. so it would have to be filed or sanded down to line up the needle in the hole, but if that is the case it would shorten even more the distance from the edge of the binding material to the needle entry point as it would push the binder attachment further to the right?? maybe they just made the needle hole too much over on the left side??. i broke 2 needles size 120 in the process then changed to a 110. this is just slightly thinner and has not broken. like uwe said, the needle bar has to stay where it is otherwise you will hit your hook on the bottom or you will have skipped stitches or none at all?? looking at your pictures john i can´t see why you are not stitching on the bias binder tape? check out a thin piece of leather and try that?have a look, regards jimi. -
Pfaff 335 Manual For Older Version Needed

Hi John, whats the problem with your needle position?? -
Hiya Kat, i have tried with thinner thread and thinner leather 1 then 3mm then changed the thread from thinner to the one in the picture with the same needle 120 and this is the results. if i back stitch for a long length the thinner cheaper thread starts to untwist?? but does not bunch up underneath?? maybe try another type of thread if you have one handy, it might turn out perfecto?? regards jimi.

i have some books stacked in front of my 335, i will move them and try to have a look at the backstitch?

Hi Katariina, right click your picture,Edit,Resize,Pixels, 50% or less. example when you click on pixels and it shows 3780 then i usually change it to 1780.

Need Help To Find A Needle With These Dimensions...
jimi replied to alexitbe's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
the screw is to loosen the needle bar and the correct position (if i am not wrong) is in the other picture where the needle tip is at the first line and the looper is coming in on the needle at the second line. at least that is what i remember from the manual and it sews this way no problem. sorry but i aint got a clue if that is a 215x5 needle you got there??? if your needle is long and you cannot move it backwards, why not try the 215x15 and move it a little forwards?? -

Need Help To Find A Needle With These Dimensions...
jimi replied to alexitbe's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Hi There alexitbe, i have a 45k49 which uses 215x15 needles, can i ask where you bought them as they seem difficult to get hold of?? and on the underside of the needle holder on this machine if i can remember correctly, there is a small stop for the length of the needle which screws out so maybe this could be to allow for longer needles?? not sure. i will take a look. jimi -
Sorry but i have to agree with Kohlrausch, 400-500 bucks is a rip off for a type singer 17,18 or whatever.

Hey JW, your machine looks like it will feed the leather just like any normal 45k21 etc.. i am not sure if this model came with the feed dog carrier or not but it looks as if it has one now and the jump foot mechanism has been taken off to allow you to feed the leather under the foot. also in the picture of the parts manual this model does not show a stitch length regulator screw?? but your machine has one, cool.you can see the bobbin winder in the parts manual in my last post. normally they are on the back of the machine near the fly wheel, (your flywheel has been changed) the other option was to mount it on the table near your belt. meanwhile you can use your drill, haha. if you cannot find needles near you, on ebay they sell them. after it is cleaned and oiled, see if it stitches!!. by the way, the screw on the arm is for attaching a swing guide so you might want to hold on to that because normally the guide plate screws on near your needle plate, but your machine does not have that area machined to receive that plate. these old swing guides pop up now and again on the net, but not too often. if you are a little handy and have the time you could make one. anyway good luck and if you need any pictures, just say, regards jimi.
