Anyone Know The Specifics About A Singer 45K31 Treadle?
jimi replied to SARK9's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Hi Sark9, that particular machine is dated 1904 by the serial number and as you know the k models were built in the killbowie factory in glasgow, scotland. and at that time it was the biggest sewing machine factory in the world!. this model was discontinued and superseded with the 45k56. according to the singer description. and looking at the picture of the machine, it seems like some parts have been taken off.?? looks like the vibrating presser foot is gone (that is why there is a long channel up the back), and on this side of the head there is a T shaped bar (adjuster) which is also missing? there are only the two screws left. it is basically a 45k25 now. i think the head of the 45k31 should look the same as this Adler 104. it is possible that it can sew, but remember you might not be able to get the feed dog for this model so you might have to make one? (drill, grinder and file). this looks like a nice project, haha. i would go for it, but remember old machines will take a bit of work and improvisation sometimes to get them going. and hopefully there are no main parts worn down, otherwise it might take a lot of searching and waiting to find the right part. if you can pull the price down a bit lower then it is possible if it does not work out you can sell off the machine and table and break clean. this will mark your leather with the feed dog on the underside, less with the roller foot.sometimes you win?? good luck. -
I Found that Elias Howe cylinder arm machine again, very interesting, and would look spectacular restored!

Very kind of you Glenn, maybe hyttogpine could find a juki one for his swing guide. could you tell me the name of the book you have glenn? that will be one on my list. regards jimi.

By the way, the two last photos which you see sewing the leather are the same machine. it sold on ebay and was cleaned up, then again up for selling. unfortunately the guy who fixed it up eliminated the first set of tension disks and replaced the second one with a nasty looking new one!!!. there should be three in total: 1 on the bobbin spool: 2 just before the thread enters the oil box (the one the guy chucked): 3 after the oil box.
-
Thanks Trox, who knows? maybe some day they will lower their prices, and people would buy more of their machines, old and new.
-
Do you have the oil box on your machine? if so it is the same thread as the one on your oil box. sorry no doubles, i also have a screw there that is not the same thread but is enough to hold it on. Nº is SS42 "oil box stud screw set screw"

this is the swing guide hyttogpine, you might need the screw to fix it to the arm?? the feet in the picture are (i think) nº1 from left to right, for oval traces(slanted not flat),nº2 is for general leather work, nº3 is for sewing piping,nº4 is possibly this foot.. this is used for binding.. so that would be the foot to use with the middle guide in the sellers other picture.. the one constabulary sent a picture of from an adler. i say this because i have the same binder but one of the feet i have has a small right toe, and this gets in the way of the small arm that goes over to guide the leather. in the parts list, this is for binding as it has no right toe. material guides are useful accessories and feet to, so if i was you, and you dont have any of these parts, i would try and get them as cheap as possible. like folker said , they do not sell them any more and you do not know when you will find them again?? also i find the binder very difficult to work with, as there is no bottom guide, just the small arm on the top so the binding can slip. also this will leave marks on the bottom side of the binding?? (veg tan) i would think it should maybe be used with one row of teeth on the left side only, this would only mark the underside of the leather and not touch the binding?? just a thought?? i could be wrong.. but how many different feed dogs are available to us nowadays??? one!
-
Yes that is your swing guide hyttogpine, it screws on the arm of your machine and you can swing it away when not in use. or you could use the fixed one (if you have one) which is a plate with 2 screws. i will try to get some pictures up later. have a look at the feet closely to see what they are for before buying, try to get the numbers. it looks like one is for oval traces?? that is the foot that is slanted?? it is not flat. will be back later and send some pictures. i must go...

Hey hyttogpine, good luck with your project . as for the chrome?? that is maybe a personal choice, if it is going to look good afterwards and you are willing to spend the money to re chrome...why not!. my personal choice was not to re chrome the pfaff 335 binder plate that was rusted. i just cleaned off the rust. if you need any help or pictures etc.. then just ask. regards jimi.
-
Congratulations hyttogpine, you got the machine. so you did not get the treadle?. how is your cleaning getting on?? keep us updated? any pictures of your progress?? regards jimi.
-
Thanks piheart, just goes to show that no matter how bad it looks, it might just be a case of cleaning and adjusting. as you saw the owner did not pack well enough and courier just lumped it on, apart from that, the machine itself had no worn parts to change. in this post the singer 17-10 was a similar case, but this time the owner packed well. just cleaning! and a needle clamp-easy to make!. 30€!! + 20 transport is all the machine cost. http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=59807&page=2.

Well..., aint got a clue Al.if it is not being pinched or frayed by a sharp edge... then folker is probably right, it could be that the thread is old?? did you try it in your adler 30 ?? -
Hi, the 29U171 machines are shoe patcher machines basically, and will sew light to medium thickness leather. so max aprox..1/4 of an inch.

Treadle - Singer 45K, 133K And Other?
jimi replied to Europeanleather's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Hello hyttogpine, Mmmmmm, this manual speaks in general of the class 45k although it just says 45K (45 is the class number and 25 is the variety), and as you can see it does not say any model number of machine, just 45k. probably because there are many variations and they did not want to refer to every one of them? the most common type of machine is being reffered to here. if you see the original manual i have uploaded later, it is basically the same in the sense that it does not refer to any specific variety, just "class 45k". the newer manual (with the 45k in big letters on the front) was probably the updated one as both machines are together and both have the reverse option. before there was one booklet for the flat bed and another booklet for the cylinder arm type. it can be confusing some times?? all of these numbers and types etc..etc in the original manual there is no reverse option shown? so when i said " for this class of machine", that is meaning the class 45k in general. (i dont know if you can upload from your tablet. but from the pc you just take the picture from the file folder not the web page. you might have to resize the picture to less pixels to upload it??). and thank you for you kind comments hyttogpine, i am glad you liked the pictures. sometimes a picture can save a whole lot of confusing words. if you want anymore pictures just let me know. For cleaning and polishing? have you seen the post "pfaff 335 journey to the unknown" regards jimi. http://www.1stinfantrydivision.de/images/stories/PDF_Dateien/Singer%2045K%20Instructions%20Manual%20-%20User%20Guide.pdf http://www.1stinfantrydivision.de//images/stories/PDF_Dateien/Singer%2045K%20Descriptions%20of%20Subclasses.pdf 45Kmanual.pdf -

Treadle - Singer 45K, 133K And Other?
jimi replied to Europeanleather's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Hi There hyttogpine, good luck with buying the machine, if you need a picture of any parts to see if they are missing then just say. i have a 45k1,45k21 and a 45ksv99, and as far as i know and have seen the 45k21,25,63 and 78 have no reverse. you can see this in the parts manual in the description. if a machine has reverse it will state it in the description of the machine. the 45ksv99 does have reverse on it. it is a screw and fixing nut to the top left of the stitch length adjuster. if the machine you are buying has reverse, then i do not think it is a 45k25. http://dixiesewingmachine.tzo.com/MANUALS/SINGERPARTS2/45K21,%2045K25,%2045K63,%20&%2045K78.pdf unless on the newer 45k25 machines they incorporated a reverse? if you go to this post, will see that there are no machines with reverse. on ebay uk there are two machines with reverse and both are class 45k89. also the 45k92 "flat bed and 45k93 cylinder arm have the reverse options. you can tell by the head of the stitch length adjusting screw, because it is larger and it has 3 knurled rings to it. also you can see the screw to the top left with the nut as i said before, which is for fixing the stitch length so you can go forward and reverse and not loose your stitch length position. i do not know if there are other 45s with reverse, but these ones do have reverse. maybe you should ask the seller for some clear pictures of the machine? in my opinion, if it has reverse ,then it is probably a 45k93, if it is a 45k25 then i do not think that it will have reverse? -

Hi, yes i agree with harry that triple feed is better for NOT marking leather, as the needle does the feeding along with the foot and feed dog, which is normally smooth. and for stitching reverse with no reverse option.. this is probably the most logical way to do it...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kooE4I1xU9I -
Hi Al, hi folker, thanks for keeping us in mind. but no jump foot here, if they are not too expensive i would do like constabulary said, buy them and sell them later on when someone asks for spare feet. i am sure you will be able to sell them sooner or later. did you find out the thread breaking problem ?? regards jimi.
