Singer 29K S.V. 3 Cobbler Leather Sewing Maschine
jimi replied to Constabulary's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Hi Folker,Yes that is the one, you can see the clamp almost in between the two bobbins? or maybe the two screws for the bobbins pass through the plate and into the arm?? the binder is on the opposite page you posted. maybe some day someone will find some information about the SV versions and what they were intended for??- 18 replies

Singer 29K S.V. 3 Cobbler Leather Sewing Maschine
jimi replied to Constabulary's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Hi Folker, do you mean the braid holder?? i think the braid holder #81912 with the two braid bobbins #81909 was clamped on with a bent pin and thumb nut #287d and #81913 according to the parts list? the binders on these machines look as if the are no bigger than the needle plate. #85675 would probably go right in front of the needle on the combined feed dog and needle plate #81933 or #81925?? just a thought? it could have been for a material gude of some kind??- 18 replies

Hi xenajo, didnt want to sound negative so i waited until your parts arrived. i done the same thing with mine, then the rack and piñon had to get sent back also as it was for the newer models, not the old ones like ours. in the end after looking all over the place the front driving piñon in my 29k was like new as i think i changed it 10 years ago and didnt really use the machine up until recently. anyway i was lucky to get someone in the work to make me two new piñons, one is in the machine and the other is a spare. your best bet would be to try and get someone in your area who does maybe model ingeneering to try and make you the parts? in the UK a lot of people do that sort of thang! hehe. these machines must be one of the most popular amongst leather workers so i am sure someone out there must make these larger piñons for the older machines?? hope you find something, good luck.

Hello Kapten, here is the link for the manual for your machine. http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=61619&hl=%2Bsinger+%2B45k+%2Bmanual there is also some more 45k machines also in this post to compare the different classes. i have three 45k machines,an old 45k1 and 45k21 with no reverse: and one 45ksv99 with reverse: as constabulary said, the 45k1 had no reverse. hope this helps, jimi.

your welcome! remember the parts book had illustrations of the parts full, half and quarter size, so if you have one around with that binder attachment (it comes in almost all of the 45k classes parts books) you could use that as a guide for size. if you need any measurements " just hawler"

And i think plate 164 part #85675 is the other part to the binding setup.
-
sorry nategines, when i said to keep the bottom of the binding up against the foot it dosent, it is the top. there is no guide on the bottom?.
-
No Problem, just a quick update on the binder. i have just made a new needle plate and as i imagined this one looks as if it will work better although i have to try it out a bit more. you can see in the picture that the feed dog does not feed on the binding as now it only has the left row of teeth feeding. i did not find this information from the groups of accesories in the parts book for the 45k21,25 etc.. the only needle plate for the 45k21,25 etc with a single row of teeth to the left has a knife setup with it. so this needle plate is not present in the parts book?? there is only the right hand one?? although i supose on a tight corner it might touch the binding ?? not sure. now i will finish the plate and try another run.

Beginner Having Problem With A Singer 45K25.
jimi replied to Edvin's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
check out your other post nategines. http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=68528&hl= i have done some tests with the linen thread and the binder on the 45k21 machine and posted it there. good luck. -
this is another option but you would be in the same boat? you would need the foot to go with this needle plate which has a modern type binder incorporated, or try to fit one on to your 45k somehow?? this looks like an Adler machine not a singer 45k so may not fit. whese binders are easier to use compared to the older type ( just my personal opinion). but the one in the picture might possibly have the same problem with veg tanned leather leaving marks on the bottom. unless it is a needle feed or jumping foot?? also that is just a small straight run of binding, when it comes to curves etc??? it gets harder to keep it in line, but not impossible . if you use chrome tanned leather i am sure you will get less marking on the bottom side of the binding. i will have look and see if i have some around and will do a test to compare. hope this helps.
-
as you see i used some veg tanned leather as this marks very easy on the bottom side due to your feed dog. then the next picture shows if you wet the leather then smooth out the marks it is not too noticable. if you want to bind say the edge of a bag or something similar where both good sides of the leather are facing outwards then the left hand row of teeth will mark your leather.
-
the width i used for this is 21mm wide and then i creased it to help keep the shape. you need to keep the middle piece of leather pushed up against the right side guide and also make sure the top side of the binding keeps up against its small arm guide, and hope the bottom of the binding keeps up against the small guide on the bottom of the foot, which is the step. it is not that easy as you think, but the more you try the better i am sure you will get.

Hi there, seems like you have picked a hard one here? i have done a couple of short runs at binding and personally find it challenging? hahaha! as we are talking about and older machine which seems to me needs a bit of time to master unlike the modern binders. first of all the binders that came with the 45k machines can take a bit of time to find, unless your machine came with all the parts for that operation. i had to wait a while to find one for mine and in the end it was an adler binder which is the same as the singer ones. then you would need the presser foot #85753 which is the one for this operation. i will leave the linen thread in that i used for your other post and sew a small piece.

hope this helps nategines.

Hi Nate, i think the needles should be about 21-25 that is what iam using at the moment (when i have time) with T207,T270 bonded nylon thread. i have only done two test runs with the linen thread and it turned out nice, i dilluted some old floorwax with turps then added a small amount of silicone oil and put it through the oil pot and it worked out well. this is the same as using beeswax, melting it down then adding turps "once it is away from the cooker" the linen thread is 18/3 cord the bobbin thread was not run through the wax, just the top thread and a nº 24 needle was used. it is a sticky sort of pull coming through your tension units so i had to back the tension all the way back on the first one then on the second wheel tension just go the half way around it, not the one and a half turn otherwise is resists too much.( at least for me).

I am sorry i dont know much about the Singer 291U1 machines, i personally would go with the max needle size and try each time a thinner thread? i have a couple of singer 45ks, an 18-2, 17-10, pfaff 335 and when this has happened to me i just go up to a bigger needle and it sorts that out. maybe the machine wont sew that much of that type of leather?? jimi
