What Are You Afraid Of / What Dont You Like In Leather Working?
Horrrk replied to Jazznow's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
For me, the dyeing and stitching processes are frightening at the moment.. Trying to get my head around the both of them and I don't have a lot of money to waste on wrong items, so I'm dithering about even purchasing in the first place.. I've been several hours now, looking through folks differing methods of dyeing and finishing and feel no further along apart from I know I want Feibings oil dyes..then I'm stuck in an edging, oiling, finishing loop.. I've nearly decided the shopping list for stitching now..but its taking time and brain power..lol I'll get there and then be able to actually make something worthwhile.. Regards Phil -
Hi Chavez..I would say the same as Spence.. If it matters enough to the product, then just burnish the edges that you'll struggle with when its assembled.. If it was a bag, for instance, you'd probably not hesitate to burnish the top of a pocket, before stitching, cos it would be hard to get to once it was done.. Regards Phil

Hi Hal.. They do look quite stylish for a fastener..sort of a cross between a press stud and a sam brown fastener.. I take it these are fresh on the market.. Just a thought, but would they not supply you or a business perhaps, with a sample?? Regards Phil

New Rig For My Bride...
Horrrk replied to Dogface's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
LOL.. Mark..I'm not sure if buffing your wife's hands will help, but what the hey...give it a go.. You never know.. I can't help with dye advice, I'm afraid Mark..but I'm sure some others will be able to give some sound advice on the subject.. At present, I'm doing my fruit in, trying to work out what to order, as far as dyes, oil, needles, thread, etc, etc..lol It seems the list is endless and all I want to do is make something thats useful.. I'll be muttering Feibing's Oil Dye in my sleep soon.!! Regards Phil -
Hi Ryan.. Nice work with the stitching pony and also with the quick write up for those wishing to make one.. You've ended up with a better looking pony than some for sale out there already, so I'd expect more people, as well as Bill asking about you selling them.. Hope it serves you well.. Regards Phil

Hi Alex..lol 'straight as a sailor at a topless bar' That'd be fairly straight then.!! Haha! As soon as the apocolypse hits, I'm swimming straight across the pond and heading for the Red Jacket Firearms establishment, I reckon, as I don't have German Shepherds..lol Zombieland was and is fantastic..humour AND zombies in one movie.!! Plus all the top tips for staying alive...mustn't forget those.. I take pics, albeit mostly scenic ones, which I litter my facebook page with and they're taken on around $32 worth of secondhand camera, (including delivery) bought from eBay..there are some good ones for cheap out there.. Thankyou Benlily.. I'm not sure there's any such thing as 'Too funny' though.. lol Take care all and mind the zombies.!! Phil

Volpert, I like the overall look of this holster. It's hard to see the detail, but it looks like it was a little difficult to stitch straight on it, down to the carving being near the edge? The burnishing looks great on it..real nice.. I think Mike has a point tho..the .22 gun will only be effective against zombie pigeons.. I reckon you need to have words with your friend, sit him down one evening with pizza, watch a load of zombie movies and maybe the Resident Evil series of films too..at least until the sunlight comes peeking thru the curtains. And then he'll come back at ya for an over-the-shoulder, shotgun holster with cartridge strap, like this one that Mojoewrkn produced.. http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=42447&hl=shotgun He'll thank you for it, come the apocolypse lol Regards Phil

You may have found your niche, Deliveryboi.!! It seems that you're among the right folk to appreciate where you're going with your leatherwork, too.. Sorry I can't help with your pricing question, but I do think you're right to go with word of mouth and Facebook as well nowadays.. Oh and I'd be sure to have a makers mark somewhere on your products.. Well done with the two sold already, by the way.. Regards Phil

Sorry Johanna, I couldn't resist..lol Regards Phil

Hi New Yorker.. Reading your post brought something to mind..not sure if it'd help, but it depends on what your other options are I guess.. I used to work for a laser company in the service department, here in the UK, repairing the systems and one of our customers was an Indian company based, I think, in Delhi.. They made their own cutters, from chunks of plywood, by cutting a thin channel in the shape required, with enough depth to slot in some steel band, as would be found on packing crates and leave a few millimetres or so proud of the surface. The workers would flip it over and place this rough and ready cutter over the material then hammer it through.. If it ever distorted, they would simply replace the metal banding.. I always thought it was a simple, but cost effective idea myself.. Maybe with a rig up to a simple press, it could cut out shapes (ie. the outer shape of wallet or iPad parts) easily in leather and certainly be less repetitive? Of course, this company had their own lasers for cutting the channel into the plywood, but maybe that task could be farmed out for little cost.. Food for thought, hopefully for someone..or perhaps a wildly stupid idea.. lol Regards Phil

LOL @ Jimbob..but as we all know 'Fussing and Nagging Wives' is pure fiction, whereas Doctor Who, is real life.. Ahem..earplugs or headphones work well..as does a solo seat on a motorcycle..but you didn't hear that from me.. lol Urbanwrist.. I like the cover a lot..very clean and stylish too.. Regards Phil

17" Macbook Bag
Horrrk replied to AndyL1's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Hi Andy..If you'd had to do four in a row of black or brown, then you'd be screaming for a different colour to them...like perhaps mahogany?? lol.. Really stunning work on the case..it looks beautiful.. Chain four or five together and you have a new style shoulder armour for office executives? Just a thought for your next project..use it, run with it..I don't require any commission..hehe.. Regards Phil -
Hi Johanna.. Just viewing the site on my mobile now.. Samsung Galaxy SII on Android. The site looks and loads the same as if I was using my pc.. Terrible.. Nah..Joking.!! lol.?? Everything is brown and I'm having a much better experience than when we had the old site, whilst using my mobile.. The headers take a short while to load, but besides that, each image loads quite well and I can use the 'two fingered zoom' (no, not a euphemism..lol..) on my screen to easily resize text and pics.. Posting is also easier..the text, stays all the same size (it used to look larger in places when I was typing..lol) So,overall,a good experience and also a better one, so far on Android.. Thumbs up, well done.!! Hope this helps.. Take care.. Regards Phil ps. Hmmm.. Just found one thing.. I went to quote someone when posting a reply and it doesn't put the quote in the text box too..

Double U.. Artist or not, you've produced some asthetically pleasing work, with good flow.. I'd love to be able to produce the same level of work..one day perhaps.. Regards Phil -
I've just been offered this, what looks like an old style multi tool, for next to nothing and I'm interested.. I think I may be able to sharpen the curved awl and perhaps even alter one of the three screwdrivers, to make it a straight awl.. The needle isn't from the tool, by the looks, as it has a round end, but the other bits have square section ends for the chuck.. I've not seen the like of it before..has anyone else?
