  1. Welcome Bill. A few years isn't new compared to a bunch of us, but congrats on finding the site and we look forward to seeing your work. Mike

  4. Did you sleep at all? Holy cow!
  5. There are some good pattern tutorials on youtube and in this section of the forum. I suggest you read/watch all of them before you begin. It's not hard but you really need to have an idea and I'm not going to recreate the wheel. The other option is to find a kit like the tandy auto pistol kit and use that. It's a bit generic, but with some embellishment, it makes a great holster. Come on back and ask specific questions once you understand the basic process and we'll be happy to offer guidance. I have nothing to add regarding ostrich other than to be SURE before you cut/glue that your pattern is correct. I recently made a lefty rig by accident. Here is the tandy kit straight out of the box: Here is one I made some improvements on:
  6. How do you learn and seethe at the same time? THAT'S a great skill. I usually don't learn until well after the seething. I kid. I LOVE this piece Eric. The colors are great.
  7. Cheryl, get those things made and ready for your show. Be strong and sell, sell, sell! Good luck and let us know how it goes!
  8. Steal away!
  9. Bill, all leather workers are cool in some regard, and I haven't had anyone here be rude or mean in the few months I've been here. The group of leather work as a whole has been far more interesting, intelligent and friendly than any other forum I have ever belonged to. I love it here and the sheer number of talented people is overwhelming.
  10. That is truly beautiful. I love everything about it. Why did you stitch with white first though? Why not just stitch with brown to begin with?
  11. Good looking sheath. I have no idea how to convert it but you might add horizontal straps like belt keepers with snaps.
  12. Hey Zachary, you CAN still tool the leather if you want the practice. Its a completely different look, but I've seen it done. Of course other things like molding and stitching should be the same as well. It can't hurt to try. You may love the result! If not, it was, as you said a learning experience.
  13. A true renaissance man! Goat hides are very cool and I'm sure you could sell them here if you get them processed decently. That would help out with the leather hobby. Just my 2 pence.
  14. Thanks Phil, I was surprised as well about the illusion of depth with that thin leather. Cheryl, I practiced three times on thick leather, so technically, it's not my "first", its my third! To be honest, the control on this was actually easier than thick leather since the thin leather doesn't grab the blade. There's way less friction, therefore the turns were easier..
  15. Well there ya go! A year makes a huge difference in any craft. And, as I said, your construction looks great. Lol @ the spur straps. I knew is was something horse related, but some of us city folk just haven't got a clue when it comes to those pieces. Would it surprise you to learn I want to make a saddle? Maybe I should go ride a horse for a while first. Anyway, thanks for posting and keep it up. Mike
  16. The holster and the pink thing. I don't know what that is.
  17. Your construction looks good, but why didn't you finish the carving on your floral patterns?
  18. That really sucks. Nothing worse than a bureaucrat in the army ranks. OR worse yet, a politician. Please let us know if you hear of any more concrete things we can do to help thwart this effort to remove our history. This Cureton sounds more like Diseaseton to me.
  19. I really like the lettering on the first one, and I like the way you made it look like chrome on the second.
  20. Braiding completely eludes me. That is one amazing skill.
  21. Thanks Bill. I love carving stuff.
