  1. Be smart and selective with your tool purchases to you don't end up with a lot of crap. Good tooling stamps make a world of difference.
  2. Welcome! I started exactly the same way, with the same set and the desire to "make" something. It's turned into a passion beyond anything I've known. Enjoy your cheap kit and use all the leather to practice on! I make holsters as here in the states, we can own almost anything. Power tool holsters are cool too and you might look into making one for a prop gun just to get the feel of it. Anyway, good luck!
  3. No worries. I'm not trying to curb your enthusiasm, only provide some guidance that I didn't have when I started. Now go make something!
  4. Will ghormley's patterns have the slide in type pretty clearly laid out. the other kind, I know how to do but its really hard to explain without showing.
  5. If you are using pre waxed thread, sometimes a ball or knot will form, but it should be a smooth transition. If you get the ball, start over until its a completely smooth transition. Also, I regularly use a pliers to pull me needles through anyway, so dont make your holes bigger. Mike
  6. Yes or use a sam browne stud. or a small buckle.
  7. Yuck. Id google ways to neutralize urine odors and see if any of them are compatible with leather. Good luck!
  8. If I were you , I'd start with something small before you dive into a sewing machine. You already have the cheapest sewing machine available. Your hands. As for tools and techniques, I would recommend you go to Tandy or another leather craft store and but beginner kit with a project that you think you'd like. Unless you want to invest a LOT of money on tools and leather without having any real experience. If you are new, you don't know what to use, therefore what to buy so it will be a lot of trial and error. I started with a tandy kit three months ago and made the wallet abortion. Last night, I finished this purse. But I spent at least 2000 bucks on all the HAND tools required to make the purse, and I don't even have a machine yet. I also recommend reading a lot. Use the forum, buy leather books etc. and ask a ton of questions. Take a class if you can, make some stuff if you can't. Your pics are pretty advanced projects. Start smaller and learn from your inevitable mistakes. Good luck, Mike
  9. Peter Main is amazing. How does he get leather to look so yellow as opposed to russet? Unreal.
  10. Dear god in heaven you aren't kidding. Nice rig though! You would do well to make her more holsters ASAP! Guilty as charged sir...
  11. Buy this one and cut an inch off. http://www.bluegunst...&products_id=81
  12. As a leather worker once told me, its the imperfections that make custom leather work interesting and desirable. Too perfect and it lacks soul. Not that we don't strive for perfection, but mass produced pieces lack originality and therefore desirability.
  13. There's a holster in that pic?? Hmmmm I'll have to look again...
  14. Hey Cheryl, keep up the work! Also, you showed us the wrong side of the blade! turn it so we can see wide part
  15. As disappointing as you think it is, I think it was a success. Nobody but you sold something. You have the possibility of future business and you now have experience that you didn't have before. I'm proud of you for following through with your show and I'll bet you learned a few things about what to do for next time! Nice job C!
  16. Helsing, I say try it. What's the worst that can happen? You may end up with something awesome, or you may end up with crap. Either way, you'll end up with experience which is valueable in and of itself.
  17. Phil, you should look into German tanneries. I've heard they have some of the finest leather available. Might be worth a look. I have zero specifics but supposedly they make good leather.
