  1. I JUST saw one of these on one of the vendor sites. I'll see if I can't find the link for you.
  2. Thats cause you have to be a dealer to get a price list. They are not cheap and I reckon that machine version is $300 bucks
  3. Weaver requires a business license but the manual one I meant is about 35 bucks and I can hook you up with someone to get one.
  4. This is what you need for relatively cheap. Weaver tool part number 65-6185, page 208. http://www.weaverleather.com/flipbooks/supply/index.html
  5. I did, and that site is really confusing. I'm not sure I could find what I needed if I had to. Maybe I'll give them a call.
  6. Hey Matt, looks good for a first effort. All of the things I see are things that will improve with time and experience. I would never dissuade you from continuing, and if you love it, you should start saving your pennies now! The camera ALWAYS makes your flaws show up way more than the human eye, so don't let that discourage you. I LOVE working with leather, and I wouldn't give it up for anything. Except a billion dollars, which I would use to buy leather, tools and all the other stuff I'll need!
  7. K, I have had exactly the same experience as you have. Thin spray of dye over white acrylic. It's fragile and I've found the only way to protect it is to use an acrylic finish over the top, like resolene or an analog. I use an airbrush to apply both the dye and the finish as brushing leaves the color blotchy or with streaks, and finishing with a brush kills the whole thing. I also found that putting my project under an infra red heater lamp between steps makes everything a little easier to work with. I hope this helps!
  8. Thanks again Jake, I called Tandy and they have something that will get me by, but I hear what your saying. The better rivet will give a more professional look. I'd really like to source some like Galco use.
  9. Sorry Ross, I missed that entirely. I'm glad Chief stepped up and tried to help.
  10. Does anyone have any of these or know where I can get them locally? I am in dire need of something that will mount one of these stiffeners ASAP. Jake if you sent something, disregard, but the lady called last night looking for the holster I made for the benefit and it just needs the rivets to be done. Thanks in advance for any info. Mike
  11. I hate to see a respected member of our community and a new member looking for help get out of sorts over something like this, Mistakes happen, and Bill was man enough to own up to them and you have to respect that, especially in this day and age. That being said, the issue of the OP has still not been resolved. does anyone here have a closer relationship with Barry than I do? If so, please give him a call and help direct barry to this site or to the OP so they can get together. In the spirit of this website and the leatherwork community, I think that is the decent thing to do. In fact, I will call him today and see if I can't come up with some resolution for the OP. Additionally, I work night shift so I will be available during the OP's timezone in the even that there are questions he needs answered. I will post here with whatever information I find out.
  12. Looks good. The only critique is the stem work looks a little uneven. The color helps hide it and no one but a fellow carver would notice it, but I thought I'd point it out. I really love the combination of the veg and chrome tanned leathers, and your background really ties in well with the rest of the purse. How about some pics of the inside?
  13. Proud uncle of a new baby niece, as yet to be named!

  14. I bought the respirator mask at the hardware store thats rated for vapors, not the particle version. However, I also created a cheap hood by using a clear plastic tote and my shop vac. Cut a hole big enough for your vac hose in the side of the tote, cut down a furnace filter to fit inside of the tote and put it against the vac hose. Turn on the van and voila! Instant spray hood. I don't use my respirator for spraying because I cant smell any of the vapors. I do use it when I glue with barge though.
  15. Looks great! Good job with the dye. Did you resist the skull first or be very careful?
  16. Bob, that there's funny, I don't care who ya are! But, ya'all are right, It will probably find me like you've said. I suppose I should give it a few more months and see, right?
  17. As a relatively new leatherworker, I have boundless passion for creating things of leather. Gun leather is where I started, but I've found that purses, women's bracelets and belts are also interesting. Guitar straps, knife sheathes...where does it stop? Braiding and lacing, clothing? I'm not interested in garments or saddles at this point, figure carving is something I'll probably delve into only as needed, and things like coasters or key fobs don't hold much interest. Maybe I'm just starting to develop some preferences, or my niche. How did you find your niche? How do you decide to specialize in just a few areas? Should I limit myself to just a few or should I try everything? It seems that aside from the specific tools required for some things, i.e. saddles or garments, most leatherwork is essentially the same. Design, cutting, decoration, stitching dyeing and finishing. I'd love to hear how you chose your area of speciality!
