  1. If anyone is still monitoring this thread: the link in the OP is broken.
  2. Thanks, Wiz. Which of the sponsors sell Jukis? Also, is the DNU-1541 the model you recommend? Is it flatbed only, or is it available in a cylinder arm configuration?
  3. Thanks, Wiz, very helpful. Do you have any doubts about a newbie learning to use any of the other machines? I haven't sewn since Home Ec a long time ago. I don't live near any of the suppliers your mention so I'm not going to be able to get an in-person demo, I will have to rely on the documentation that comes with the machine. Also: any thoughts about stitch quality? I know from your other posts that you prefer a square drive machine.
  4. Dan, if using this for leather, does it have to be vented to the outdoors or a fume hood?
  5. Could you list a few brand names and models that fit this criteria? And, if you wouldn't mind: I've been offered a chance to buy a two-year-old Campbell Lockstitch for $4.5K. What do you think of it for use with lightweight leather personal items such as bags, satchels, and wallets?
  6. One like this might be longer-lived, because the edges of the belt that are going to be rubbing against the beltloops are leather.
  7. Does anyone have any recommendations for a first stitching horse or pony or clam? I'm interested mostly in making personal accessories such as wallets, handbags, etc.
  8. Very cool indeed! Thanks for posting.
  9. Very nice. Hand or machine stitching?
  10. I would like to have some cowhide embossed with an all-over pattern of my own design. Are there companies that offer this as a service, or is there an machine for doing it in a small shop?
  11. Tim - your website doesn't list any contact information. I took the time to fill out your form and ask a question and request a catalog, but when I pressed "enter" I got an error message.
  12. I have a bundle of drive punches from Tandy. I'm not impressed. They don't always cut after one blow, and they often need coaxing to get back out of the piece. I've have a project coming up that needs a LOT of 1/8" or slightly larger holes, so I'm thinking that before I start I will either invest in a set of higher quality, and/or attempt to sharpen. Does anyone have any recommendations they'd like to make regarding quality brands, and sharpening instructions?
  13. Are lacing chisels and thonging chisels the same thing?
  14. Thanks. What are they made of?
  15. Do people who own their own clickers typically have their dies made for them by a specialist manufacturer? Or is it possible to make your own?
  16. Can anyone recommend a brand of dye that performs well on veg tanned dye and is low odor? I share my workspace with non-leather workers and don't want to annoy them.
  17. This is somewhat of a random curiousity question, but here goes: how is leather filigree attached to a solid back piece? For example, I'm looking at some photos of vintage purses where the decoration is described as filigree - but I can see enough detail to determine whether or not it is stitched on. I supposed it could be glued in place, but would that actually be secure enough for an item that sees as much abuse as a purse flap?
  18. Newbie here. Interested mostly in relatively lightweight projects like wallets and purses - no harnesses or saddle for me! The number and variety of machines and knives for skiving/paring leather has me bewildered. What would you recommend? And do you use a different thing when you need to reduce the thickness of a long piece of leather, such as for a belt or a strap, compared to a localized requirment, such as preparing an edge of a wallet for turning.
  19. Ah, thanks. I did not notice that the inside edge was showing the cut. Would it be possible to somehow turn/roll it as well so no cuts were showing?
  20. Could someone explain to me what was done after the 4th-to-last photo to get the nice result on the inside that we see on the last photo?
