  1. How does the 441 clone do on light material?
  2. I have a consew 206rb and its a great machine. However, the Techsew is a cylinder arm machine, and that is way more versatile for sewing hard to reach places like bags and zippers.
  3. I found one tid bit. A gentlemen told me that these were made by Simco for Ross Saddlery in Kansas.
  4. A friend asked me to help her fix up and clean an old elephant hide saddle she aquired. Does anyone have any information about the maker? ROSS WESTERN, Wichita Kansas Wonderful saddle. I helped her fix a few rips and tears. Stitched some of the cinches, made a new cinch, polished the silver conchos ( made in england) and add some new straps). Oh yeah, We also gave it a good scrubbing and oiling. Beautiful saddle. I wish it were mine. Unfortunately, along its lifespan, someone spilled some nasty junk on the seat. It has penetrated through the entire thickness of the seat leather, and made the leather "goey" in places, and brittle in others. This repair is beyond my abilities. Such a fine saddle like this doesn't need an amateur hacking aways at the seat to replace the seude.
  5. Did you c lean the leather with saddle soap before dying? Did you oil before dying? Was the leather still damp when you dipped? In my limited experience I got those spots if I didn't clean my leather prior to dying, or I oiled too heavily or didn't wait over night after oilin befire dying. I've also noticed that if I was impatient and dyed before the leather was completely dry. It has always buffed off though. If I didnt get good dye penetration after buffing, I clean with saddle soap, let dry, and redye.
  6. I was on a big guitar forum, and the search function was about worthlless. Once the site got really big, they switched over to a google powered search and you could dig up all kinds of cool stuff all the way back to when the forum started.
  7. I also use Murphys Oil soap to clean horse tack. If its really nasty, I will make up a bucket of warm soapy water, dunk the tack, and scrub it with a stiff brush. Once it dries, I apply leather conditioner. Lots of products available. I avoid vegetable oil because they can go rancid over time. I oil all my tack with Extra Virgin Olive Oil because I don't care for feedstore/tack store neatsfoot oil.
  8. I put it on an ironing board, and iron it. Also works good to crease edges over for easier sewing. Just did it yesterday.
  9. I made my mother a purse, and everyone seemed to like it, so I used the left over material to make one for the Arizona Cattle Growers benefit auction this week Soft red leather bag, cloth lined, with ostrich strap and trim.
  10. Swing guides are expensive for the 206, but it would be nice to simply swing it out of the way. Uwe, have you experienced the material wanting to jam up against the spring loaded edge guide when you sew thick leather? I
  11. This is what I have on my Consew 206rb-1 Bob Kovar from Toledo Industrial Sewing Machines sold it to me for a few dollars. You have play with position to get the hang of using it correctly or it will cause jumped stitches, but once you figure it out you can sew a belt or purse strap with the roller touching the inside presser foot as quick as you want to sew. I just did a 42" purse strap this morning. Took me longer to do the lock stitches than it took to sew down both sides. Ive found that I need to put the center of the roller even with the needle, and then I feed my work in from a slight angle .
  12. How does one go about ordering direct from the tannery, do you have to place large orders?
  13. The bottom of the strap is the same leather the purse is made from.
  14. I never use the knee lever because I am too tall for the geometry of my table. I have my reverse on a foot pedal, but sometimes I screw that up because I try to feather the reverse pedal, which makes the machine sew in place.
  15. I should have clarified the difference in the original post. Spray can clear coat designed for leather is completely different than the clear enamel and lacquer you buy at the store for 3-4$ a can.
  16. What it looks like to me is a dry veg tan leather thar was coated with a matte or satin enamel. Then bent to crack the finish and the leather. I've done the same thing on my guitar straps ( by accident). Never had any finish peel off before. I quit using rattle can clear coat (stuff you buy at the hardware store or lowes) because of how it cracks.
  17. I have one English point chisel I bought from weaver when I made 30 GPS trackin g collars. Great tool that saved me a lot of time. However, they are very expensive, and I can't justify buying one for all the different size straps I make. The method you demonstrated is awesome, thanks so much.
  18. Thanks yall, I am going to make something similar for the the Arizona Cattle Growers benefit auction. Last year I made a padfolio, but it didn't generate much interest. Probably because Bob Parks donated one that was worth 10x more than mine.
  19. http://www.tandyleather.com/en-usd/product/button-stud-11310-007.aspx Traditionally, I have seen these button studs on similar design pouches. If you wanted more mechanical solution, numerous style clasps are available.
  20. You can spray a heavy coat of rattle can clear coat ( enamel or lacquer). Let dry completely, then bend it tightly ( roll it up tightly both ways) and the finish will crack.
  21. Is there a tool or applicator that allows those of us with hand tremors to cleanly and neatly apply Fiebing edge coat? Occasionally, I do projects where simply burnishing the edges are not practical, and I have given up trying to use dye on an edge where I have chrome tan and veg tan glued together.
  22. My parents recently visited me in Tucson, and while here, my Dad bought a pistol. I told him if he bought the leather, I would make him a belt and holster for it. While we were at the leather store, I noticed my mom was gathering an arm load of stuff. She laid it on the counter and said, wouldn't that make a nice purse. I said, I bet it would. So... I guess I am making a purse now. I have no idea how to make purses. I don't know anything about purses. I thought about it for a while before I made a mock up out of vinyl. Mom bought some very expensive red leather I didn't want to ruin.
