Pair of Slim Jims for 1860s
plinkercases replied to Steve75's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I would use more than 4oz and it was suggested to me also to double it up so there is a thicker edge to glue and stitch through at an angle. At the risk of being a broken record the Stohlman holster book shows how to do it. I tried my first a while ago and it went OK . Not as tricky as I thought when I followed directions. Trickiest parts are awl angle to hit the grooves and then the aiming of the awl towards the "centre" (think spokes of a wheel) so the inside stitches are narrower than the outside stitches. -
Juki 1341 experience? pros cons?
plinkercases replied to plinkercases's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Thanks Wiz. You are saying 1531 but I assume you do mean the 1341 I am looking at. Whichever I am sure most comments would apply anyhow. The manufacturer's site says presser foot by knee 16mm so that's good. Good to know they are well manufactured and serviceable. I would like to here from anyone who has used one? the search of the site seems to indicate a few folks own them but they were old threads. -
Juki 1341 experience? pros cons?
plinkercases replied to plinkercases's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Yup purchased from the importer direct and tax in, Canadian dollars and I can drive there to get it. he also does service so one stop shop. As I say I am not shopping around per se so I have checked out anything else but just walked in this opportunity and am wondering about this particular machine and if it is OK for my needs. -
To start yes I did a forum search and read up on wherever this machine appeared but I am now just looking for specific feed back on it from those who know it or use one? So... I do all kinds of stuff of varying thicknesses but for the gun leather and sheaths thicker stuff usually hand sew or use my Boss. I am considering investing in a machine that can run from the upholstery leather stuff up to perhaps 2x11 oz = 22/64 = 2.75/8 (if my math hasn't failed me.. again). I have a line on a new in box Juki 1341 with stand et al for a very good wholesale Canadian Dollar price. I will not be in any way a production shop any time soon and more for a Jobby (Hobby that pays a little) but I would like to pay and cry once for machine that will serve my light duty use for the coming years. I know it is server motor, walking foot top and bottom feed, large bobbin, tub arm, and can pass 3/8th total thickness under the needle. I am not really looking for alternatives just some feed back on this particular machine right now if you don't mind. Unless of course someone has a great deal here in Ontario on an equal or better machine for less than $1900CND.... Thanks in advance for any knowledge you can share about this machine.

Pair of Slim Jims for 1860s

Personally I like the Slim Jim/California style with the sewn in plug. Second choice is squared but open then round sewn. Why not try the sewn plug? -

I gave myself the wrong answer! Of course it makes sense now that the curve is the same regardless of length just the ends move along the curve. An I am not against the idea at all. The other idea of forming to the old belt was just fro a pants belt really. Thanks for straightening me out Dwight! -

you roughed out the grain/hair side with sand paper? correct? I am planning a roughed out gun belt and really like the look you got. -

Did you just build it flesh out or is it grain side but roughed out and if roughed out just by sanding? OR did you use a split? -

If the curve is slightly different for different length then no youcouldnt cut the same curve unless you were making a run fo equal (or relatively equal) belts. at least that's how I htough it out wheni asked myself the same question. As for forming the curve I saw some where you can trace the curve of a broken in pants belt, cut the profile of plywood and form the new belt against that so the new pants belt (or through the loop gun belt) already matches the nice old belts specific curves for you build and wear style. I may try this when I next make myself and every day belt. -

Very nice. Love the finish and tooling and creative makers mark placements. -

Thanks Dwight. My weakness is bacon and egg breakfasts. Just had to go up a pant size myself after a year at a new job which is more desk centric than I am used to. My increase still seems to be above the gun belt line though. My rig slipped down a bit when I forst started wearing but it has taken on a slight curve plus I decided to wear my guns belt up higher it just below the waist/belt line and I crank it in a hole and wear suspenders to keep the pants from drifting down with weight. I may still add some suede or roughed out just for the "belt and suspenders" insurance. Did four stages at a cowboy shoot Saturdays in 35c heat but lost more weight due to sweating standing still than moving. Shooting "sports" aren't really that "active"! And God certainly has blessed me. Murray -

Dwight, Thanks for you photo. Would it be safe to assume that a 40 is to the middle billet hole so the entire finished leather length is approx. 45 inches so 4.5 over 45 is about 1 inch curve for 10 inches of finished leather? -

Thanks Dwight. I think they will go on my Christmas wish list for the kids to get me. EDIT... but for $160 Canadian on amazon.ca I had better a really good boy this year. I wonder if anyone of the forum has a set they are done learning from........? Perhaps I will post a WTB notice. -

Like the old framer I trained with used to say... " I cut it three times and its still too short!" Dwight are the Bianchi tips on the videos? I've been toying with getting the DVDs on occasion... I don't think has a holster making book does he? I have Blue Steel and Gun Leather but that's of course more about holster development. -
Stohlman's book has a wealth good practical directions on all kinds of projects and different stitching challenges. You can get it on lien as PDF for cheap from Tandy and page 8 illustrates the awl angle issues.

Loop Holster for 5" 1911
plinkercases replied to Josh Ashman's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Josh thanks for talking my comment in the spirit it was intended and for the feedback. I do see that a range holster can have a little more leeway (if that's the right word) than an EDC holster. And good idea on the loop being open to allow for greater placement options around the belt line. Neat.... -
