  1. I am dying to try the 50/50 mop-n-glow finish... perhaps for my own CAs rig I am planning out.
  2. What is the finish by the way?
  3. While I cant spin out metal parts or wood on a lathe I figured I could stack leather, rasp and shape vertically on my drill press and get as creative as I could with weighting... thick brass fender washers and slices of a marble rolling pin. still noodling around with some other ideas of how to weight them such filling them with bird shot or packing it with duct seal. I got some foster bits after these were all twisted together so the next batch may have recessed hardware on the top. My original Stohlman is 14oz and the new ones are 1.5 and 2 Ibs respectively. It was fun, they work and I want to make some more with different assemblies and bits.
  4. I was looking in Tandy at a second granite and decided not to go fro it yet and then drove 15 feet from their unit to back of a granite counter shop and got 4 large thick pieces of different dimensions (square to long rectangle good for belts) out of their dumpster for free...with permission. If you have a shop near you go in and explain what you are up to and ask to see their dumpster.
  5. Nice job and good tips. I also continue around from the main seam. Goo trick to predo the holes on the body and use them as a guide for the plug holes with a smaller awl. clever.
  6. Looking forward to the results and shared lessons learned.
  7. if you put the stitch line a little closer to the edges you get a little more room for them on the plug.
  8. good work and cool idea for cant adjustment
  9. Thanks dikman and yes it seems your experience already is what I am anticipating.
  10. The Boss should go to help fund this machine. But it may not sell so..... I amusing 277 in it for the few things I did use it for. The heavy stuff I can still stitch by hand. I think I will stitch by hand for the few holsters and sheaths I make and use the machine for belts, cases and bags (I make shooting bags and stuff out of old couch hide that this would be great for.) Now I have an objective I will have to do the fund raising. he said just let him know when I ma ready.\ Thanks for the vicarious excitement Floyd.
  11. Definitely on the block for sale now. Asking 1950 which is the Tandy Elite price so you save the taxes for a basically new machine. And I I will drive to you if located as per above areas I travel... now add Newmarket, Aurora, King City. AND if you email me I will send pics of Boss, the Master Crafter Accessory Pack, NOT available in Canada and a 300 USD cost from Tippman (OK just checked and is on sale for 200 for bow but still..) 6 full spools of thread in 277 and 207 weight, black, brown and white, 30 USD (=180 USD) each from Tippman (and many of the correct needles for each size). I also have the box I really hardly used the machine since I got it. as stated above and then updated after a few months still with me I made 4 halters (then no more orders came...) and 2 holsters (then I decided I just like sitting and hand stitching them.) two gun belts and a rifle sling. Pictures I can send will show the only wear on the machine: On the main body half way up on the handle side came that way from shipping On the base some wear from the clamps On the arm some wear from passing the frame a few times when I started before I noticed the arm bolt needed tightening out of the box.
  12. OK so I had a good long chat with Chris from Japan Sewing Machines and here is the scoop; its clone of the Juki with 90% very same parts but assembled by Kobe in there own plant all the same functionality as the Juki 1341 it is industrial grade he will assemble, set up/adjust and give me a training session for 50 more bucks in his warehouse comes with servo motor 1 yr warranty on the motor 90 days on the machine if it needs service later his tech there or any of the guys he knows will do it for me cash and on my site if necessary Now I need to sell my Boss for sure.
  13. Are you smiling because you already tried out 9 of them? Nice work.
  14. Much of he front end of that pattern pack looks like a lift from the Stohlman holster book (or is at least same era) which says: Light/Lined 6/7 Medium 8 Heavy 9/10 So it does seem back in the day... 9oz
  15. He did say all the Juki attachments and such all fit the Kobe. Anyhow I will connect with him on Monday and get someone info and certainty pass it on. Just glad to here good things about the 1341 which is a start. Thanks all.
  16. Childhood holster attempts would be a good thread.... I have mine in a box down stairs (cooler than the attic) and may just pic and post them on a thread like that. Looking forward to seeing yours when it cools down. Here in Toronto we are having a record hot summer and it was 35 Celsius (95F) again today and humid like an arm pit. Maybe not Texas hot but more than we a re used to for more than a day or two but this has been weeks....
  17. I was in his warehouse, saw the boxes, saw his tech room, saw machines out, and was referred there by a dealer who says, "if you want industrial machines or parts in Toronto this is the guy". This all comes out of him not being able to help with an adaptor to put a presser foot on my old Singer 96K51, he asked what I was using it fro and I explained and so he says "I can sell you this for that." Shows me the Juki catalogue he has and picture on his inventory pics but says the only difference is it says Kobe on it - which is his own "brand" - may be a clone or relabelled but I am asking him that - no reason fro him to carry his own brand and it not be a reliable machine. he said fro specs I can just look at the Juki site and materials. I asked " You will sell to me at wholesale and new?" and he says yes and its in the box or I would show it to you. He even wants the tax on top of 1,700 CD which brings it to about 1,900. Wasn't fishing fro a cash deal and I didn't ask for one. Sure would be a business expense. I see no reason for him to pull my leg and perhaps mess his reputation (not that I could do real damage as a little guy, but I could go back to the dealer who referred me etc..) and he seemed upset he couldn't help me since my machine was over 80 years old. Nice guy and so was his tech. http://www.japansewing.com/index.html This could just me I was in the right place at the right time. And yes of course I will make sure I am clear on who services it if it goes south.. him or a dealer.. and I will be confident of warranty details before I buy from him. Again I see no reason for him as one of the heads of the machine food chain here to mess a little guy like me over. But I have been wrong before I am sure.... I am waiting for an email answer to a few questions before I make any decisions. More will ne revealed I am sure.
  18. Uwe the importer also deals in Juki name brand as well and told me it was made by the same manufacturer but just literally rebranded to Kobi so no a clone but rebrand of the same mechanical unit. But I will confirm that with him if I am going to buy. Thanks for the manual and I think I will ask him to unbox and set it up for me even if I have to pay him a little more if I go for it. I can literally put it in the van and be home in 15 minutes so it should stay as set. Thanks Hockeymender for the good feed back. Thanks all for the help so far.
  19. This one barely fit 3 cards per side off the bench with no stuffing required and has slowly front in capacity as I added a card or two over time and it relaxed. Now it holds all I need plus some crap I dump every week or so. Holds then snug but still easy to get them out even from behind each other. Mind you it is not veg tan but pig skin road side couch hide. Here are 2 veg tan card holders which were to small and for sure due to the stitches being way too close until wet and stuffed and now they are very much like card holders versus wallet.
  20. No worries Wiz and no it is new in box from the importer/distributor and branded Kobi but the same mechanical unit. Unfortunately he doesn't have one set up but I can ask him who he sells to that may have one on the floor then take some of my thicker veg tan to them and see it will run it. he did show me a sample of almost have inch built up of upholstery leather layers that he said it can do. and a sample with a seem made of fairly robust upholstery leather with a piping in it. More to think about and thanks lads.
  21. I needed one fast so just did a real down and dirty folded rectangle out of pig skin with a pass of NFO. And am still carrying it a year later!
  22. What do you use yours for project wise and max thickness? What is your max thread and needle size you run? Happy with it? And yes 2x11 oz = .344 = 8.74mm so technically it could fit under 10-16mm lift but as you say.. And thanks for a nod on the price. Starting to really consider this now.
  23. Yupper... so I soaked it and JAMMED them in!!! not the correct answer but at least I could put a card in it. In the drawer, In the dark. I am often under estimating the tolerances and mystical "shrink factor" As for stitching thinner material I learned to make some thin wood pieces of various dimensions to sandwich the thinner work. and longer bits for doing straps and belts etc. Necessity (or really frustration) is the mother of invention. Cool looking laminated edges though.
