Historically correct Western chaps
plinkercases replied to LumpenDoodle2's topic in How Do I Do That?
Big Sioux beat me to it... I was going to scan you some pages from my copy of trappings but you will have your own soon enough! in the section on chaps they show the back side of one set and the notes say they typically fastened with "4 to 8 spring snaps" EDIT - another note for another pair mentions fastening behind the knee with a button strap. And yup Packing Iron is another must have. Hope you can find a copy of that one also. I have another called "John Wayne's Wild West" and despite the title it has some good pictures and history of the west woven around a timeline of his films. Looking forward to what you come up with. -
MERNICKLE "WILD BUNCH" 1911 HOLSTER
plinkercases replied to AA3JW's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I dont see this pattern in the Ghormley pack, however, the wings are on the back side of the belt loop and rest against the hip/body to help stabilize the holster without a lot of leather on the front side of the loop. Some have a raised ridge to help keep the holster from riding up when drawing the weapon. Hope this helps. -
I have skinned a lot of road side couch hides and provide the following observations: real leather will look like suede on the back and the colour will match the outer discounting for flesh versus grain appearance back of bonded will look like black or white or grey cloth or even have a foam like appearance and not be colour matched to the grain side. back panels of couches that have no seams are not worth even looking at as they will be fake unless its a really really expensive throw away if you check the back and it is fake then do double check the seat cushions as I have found sometimes the seat top is real, the back cushions sometimes and the arm tops sometimes. before I go town skinning on the road side I always check back then cushion. the arm rests are usually too small to worry about skinning. I also connected with 4 local upholsters and explained who I was and what I do and now I get bags of leather dropped on my porch from when they redo a leather couch or I drop by their shops every few months and pick up what they have on hand... worth a call since I have once be given all the hi end leather recently removed from a hi end couch before it ever made it to the house... the client didn't like the colour when it was on the couch so... they redid it and did have the heart to chuck all the good leather so I got it. I drive the local neighbourhoods on Sunday night after weekend house cleaning action and there is usual a couch or chair to check out. I now have more than I can every actual use up.... doesn't mean I stop hunting though. I have some real beautiful stuff in bins.... carry a knife in the glove compartment. people stop to watch me skinning and often comment that it good to see the leather going to use rather than the dump...

Helloooooooo
plinkercases replied to Red Cent's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Someone is doing cowboy action in style with that rig. Beautiful work as always. Are the holster pouch parts just formed or is there a little steel in there? Pouch and or shanks? -

Only one question but I am sure the answer is yes... did you install a welt? the tip looks like a tight fold which made me wonder if there is a third layer in tehmiddle or not. Otherwise looks great. -

I built my press from a wine press kit part. I believe I got 40 duro foam but honestly cant remember as it was a while ago. I was just thinking the other day of getting some slight softer for the first layer in the press. I don't actually use the foam all that often as I make so few items I enjoy hand forming and boning. I do use it where I have made a dummy positive of an item and them press a negative around it. Works great for that... the amazing power of the inclined plain. Bit of McGyver but it does what I need at my scale.

Ontario also. Welcome eh?

There is a Pfaff 230 up for auction near me and some online descriptions and video say it is industrial heavy duty fro leather, canvas, vinyl - not too serious about it but did make me wonder if anyone has experience with this machine as it could go very low ball.....

Considering Selling Tippman Boss In Toronto/bellville Canada
plinkercases replied to plinkercases's topic in Old/Sold
Machine and accessories are still for sale and still asking 1750 CDN plus any shipping. Depending on timing I could arrange to drop it off near GTA, London, Peterborough, Havelock, Belleville , or the 401 corridor from Toronto to London or Belleville?. -
I have searched and read various post on threads etc, but hard to pull all together all the info so I thought I would give folks a chance to provide their definitive favourites and where/how they get them. So for those who don't mind taking the time to answer.... fill in the blanks for your go to thread and needle combos for HAND sewing: (I am in Canada so any other Canucks who respond would be appreciated - I need an alternative to Tandy....) Thread: Brand, source, what you use for light, medium and heavy duty (specific ordering info) Needles:( match above of course) Brand, source, what you use for light, medium and heavy duty (specific ordering info) Thanks in advance.

Literally using scraps and a few seconds when ever I got to walk by my bench I mocked up a pocket sheath/organizer last night and just now to keep my knife and light sorted. I want to play with the profile of the backer (width and bottom line) to fit as cleanly in different shaped pockets and I think I will switch the knife to the "in side" or "groin side" (this is fro right hand front pocket) as it is heavier and will keep the unit from tipping outwards over time perhaps. Having the backer with flesh side out really stabilizes the unit in carry and when drawing and re-sheathing the tools. Even as a knock up job it seems to have basically solved the problem and it is very easy to get the tools in and out and the "print" from outside isn't bad at all. So I want to refine this approach. So has anyone else made something like this and can provide their lessons learned?

Hand sewing tip for people with arthritis
plinkercases replied to rickdroid's topic in Sewing Leather
Great tip and I was just daydreaming about sometime like this today!! and here I find the answer. I have a bad thumb.... one question or concern is.. if it gets on the leather from handling before it is finished how does it affect the leather taking colour etc.? Currently I use the vinyl gloves And needle nose when needed AND I have a plug of bees wax on the side of my horse and pony jaws and I 'dip" my awl in it ever hole or two so the wholes are waxed and the needles pick some up along the way. shoe makers wax on the thread would likely act the same way and I will look into it I am about to experiment with finger cots to avoid the sweaty hand action: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/100Pc-Orange-Natural-Latex-Rubber-Finger-Cots-Sleeve-Textured-End-Tacky-Multiuse-/131813555791?hash=item1eb0b33e4f:g:fS4AAOSwInxXNpKq I can t find Tacky Finger in Canada but seem that SortKwik is essentially the same thing and available at staples.- 18 replies
