  1. I use a press made with a wine press screw unit and for the kind of forming you are doing.... works just fine and cheep... and I get a little exercise.. for the kind of moulding over something for detailing I use a one inch sheet of 40 duro and also work just fine but I still prefer hand molding/boning for the volume I do...which is very low.
  2. Very nice and yes you inspire me to try the decorative stiches as well....
  3. Sergey is the Bulgarian and he has posts here. I have his catalogue which he will send to you if you email and this pattern is not in it but yes he does custom work: snleatherbg@gmail.com
  4. I'm from Toronto as well. Welcome! I started with the Al stohlman books from Tandy. Watched some of their basic videos, Nigel and Ian as have been mentioned and just started working at it. When a new project presented something new I went and found books to DVD and YouTube sources... Sheridan carving etc. As an example. I get leather from Tandy (Markham shop which uses to be Scarboro and real close to me) if necessary but usually through a friend with a serious leather goods production product shop in Guelph. I am eating for a chance to try an order with some new guys out west who just started up and seem to have good prices and free shipping in Canada... name escapes me and it isn't on my phone here. I will find the name and post them. And search this forum as creatively as you can... if you are going to ask it... chances are it already has been in some form or another and answered here by those who have gone on ahead of us in the craft... even if only by a day! I am in the east end if you ever want to meet for a coffee and leather chat.
  5. very nice. look forward to seeing the end result. have fun
  6. very classy looking... there a lot of good Czech leatherworkers it seems.... looks like you may be one of them
  7. Here's a neat idea to save real estate around the belt.. if he isn't worried about concealment this is an idea to stack them perpendicular to the body...
  8. Oh no kidding.... and yes those are cool stamps. well done
  9. Bolt head stamps!!! Stohlman would be proud of you. Do you use files and/or Dremel or a combo to create the patterns? I would love to see what you stamps look like on leather.
  10. Good outer work belt leather is Latigo for the belt itself. Depending on the attachments pouches could be made from a heavy split and specific tool cases/frogs etc. from a heavy veg tan or the latigo in some instances.... depends what you are hanging off the belt.
  11. Fair enough. You looked him in the eyes so you are far more informed than I am. I guess it was a bit of an arm chair reaction. that said I am curious to see how you build this rig.
  12. With that many mags on his belt you should also sell him some matching suspenders..... and now seriously - Personally I would have concerns about the person's under lying reason for carrying if he feels he needs that much ammo onboard. that is not needed at the range unless he's a fool and just never wants to load a mag when a the range ( I don't know of any shooting discipline where that many would be needed or even practical to train with - before going back to the bench or "starting line") and if he plans to walk around off range like this....That is not what is needed for a self defence encounter.. that is a fire fight (and even the good guys don't plan for them to last that long) or a massacre plan for ammo.
  13. if you want to try to order from a Canadian (Ontario) source and perhaps benefit from the exchange rate check out Harness Hardware Inc. Nice Mennonite run outfit. Good service and good products. http://www.harnesshardware.ca/
  14. In Canada harness makers call them English bridle stud hooks. I have seen them mostly on English style reins where they attached to the bit.
  15. Dwight your HVAC motor powered burnisher just made my day. Thanks!
  16. For tooling I use 1lb (or sometimes my slightly lighter one depending on the work) - for makers marks and lettering (i.e. everything imprinted other than tooling) I use a 1.5lb framer's dead blow hammer which eliminates any bounce and has worked great for years. For punching I use a 2 pound maul or mallet which ever is close at hand.
