Exotic Ethics?

I wanna wear a Fish Costume. What that has to do with the topic, nothing. Just throwin it out there. -
I use a lot of exotic skins in my work. It was how i was taught. I appreciate all the crazy skins I work with and most of what i work with is farmed just like cow hide. One skin that is not is Elephant. These days I have a source that allows me to buy it and quite frankly its commin out my ears. I've always been taught and educated that Elephants are in use all over the world. They work in India. They work in Circus' and they are in Zoos as well. Sooner or later the die. some of the skins I get somes from these situations. Some of them are "Culled". Culling is the process of thinning a herd to allow the rest of the herd to survive and thrive. its selectivly done. All of the skins I buy have CITES tags and its all above board and legal. Besides the Elephant Skin is some of the more amazing leather I've been getting. The grain and character on it is like no other. I'm detailin this because I got some crap from someone sensative to the issue the other day. I tried my best to help them understand that I do use every last bit of skin I get. I also explained the above and tried to help them understand that using the skins makes whole use of the animal. Funny I never get this type of bleeding heart stuff about Aligators, Stingray or Shark. Or even Ostrich for that matter. AND no ever cries for the frogs i use too. Why? I have a certain ethic about what I do and it keeps me good. I'm not making wallets outa Seals, Bald Eagles or your dog for that matter. Any thoughts from the Senior Members here?

What I like to use for perfect circles is usually a plastic lid off some can and I like using a soft lead/charcoal pencil with the end super round and soft. Try going to the art store and getting an EB leaded pencil. they work great on black leather. on lighter leathers I ise a stylus or some duller tool to leave an impression but not injure the skin in case my sewing is off. then again i sew all my stuff by hand at thispoint so its not as much of a problem.

Huntsman's Bag
badLoveLeather replied to carr52's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Yes it does tend to get beat up and raggedy lookin when you pull 30' through sixty or seventy holes. Wet seaming is using glue (ie; Barge, leather Weld, Contact Cement) to join smaller pieces. take a sharp knife ( I use an Xacto knife) to split one side of the lace on the top and one side on the bottom. Split the difference between the two so the glued piece is as thick as a normal piece. When I hide the seam when doing double loop lace I usually do it when tucking the lace under the cross lace. Make Sense? Would you like photos? -
Huntsman's Bag
badLoveLeather replied to carr52's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Nice lace. Use shorter pieces. The lace will stay crisp and good looking. 8' lengths make the end of the 8' look dogged and beat up. I generally use 18" to 20" lenths and have learned how to wet seam and hide the seams. It takes a pro to find 'em My .2$ -

badLoveLeather replied to badLoveLeather's topic in Exotics, Reptiles, Furs and others
Hey Thats True! i didn;t consider that. Figure the snake was probably about 14 feet long and depending on hom many villigers it ate in the course of its lifetime it coul have been at least 8 or 9 years old.I so want to start an aligator farm. Yes I do like to work with the Exotic Skins. I have the good fortune to get great deals on exotic skins. Eventually i will look to pass on those deals to people here in LA. I'm sure the exotic skin business could be good for me. Just a thought though. -
