  1. Holy howling batman!! now that is cool as ice great tooling on that!! That just blows my mind!!!
  2. Thanks Raven, don't have a model other then my ugly self lol but once this damned rye neck of mine heals itself will take a few snaps of it around my own neck, it does what its suppose to I will tell you that lol. Here is the finished product. Really must find a model for a the corsets that I have in my mind that I want to do. Oh that is how it sits by the way as I have it sitting on my manquine or how ever you spell it!
  3. Ahh finally got the neck corset done the French roll turned out rather nice, now I just have to figure out how to post a pic in this instead of starting a new topic lol
  4. Yeah it is a little tall but at least I have it set up with a lacing set up that its a one person job so that they do not have to have a second person helping them, did add a red French roll to the top which will get better pictures today and post it.
  5. Hey Trevor how did the leather respond to the turpentine...more importantly did the dye get effected?
  6. Thanks for the idea on the sharpie oh and the rubber eraser works rather well tried that last night on some eco weld leather bonding from tandy
  7. very nice been thinking of trying a wood burner on leather just to see what might happen
  8. Bill mate that is a cool idea about the wax paper that is a must try thank you for that idea, man I so do love this forum I have learned a lot just from reading and some of the posts that people have helped me with.
  9. Well this is the first neck corset that I have taken photos of its actually the second neck corset that I have done. First one was a major learning experience and a few screw ups so not going to show that lol. This is designed to go with an underbust corset that I am working on will have photos of that soon.
  10. I have used both thick and thin thread from tandy as it is waxed which saves me time as I hand stitch EVERYTHING I have done from wallets to belts to bags and even corsets. Thread size to me only matters on what project you are using. Like the corset that I have done I use 138 fine thread. But for other projects I have used thicker thread, I always use a saddle stitch for the main seams as I feel that is the strongest stitch there is. As a few people mentioned depends on how wide apart your holes are that really effects the size of thread you use.
  11. Thanks for the ideas, the dripping is one problem that has plagued me in the past I just use a paper towel and run it down the brush to wipe off the extra crap. The problem I have especially with this neck corset is when I bend the parts (and there is a lot of bending) unfortinatly once in a while I will go over the seam allounce and spread the contact cement to a smaller part of the leather that was NOT suppose to go there. I will try the rubber trick a bit later and yeah need to get an old can to use thanks for that information and thank you one and all for the help you have given me some great ideas to try!
  12. Cool thanks for the idea of using a rubber eraser. And as for dying before I put it all together I might have to start doing that again. The project I was working on in question is a neck corset and I wanted to be able to punch all the holes then dye it as one whole piece it came out ok but you can see a few small marks where I had to cut some of the leather to remove the contact cement.
  13. Ugg was hoping there was away around it other then just hacking a layer of leather out and as for hiding it no unfortinatly it is on a seam and it shows up since I am using black antique gel.
  14. Still learning the ropes when it comes to dying leather. Been running into a problem when I accidentally get contact cement in a spot I do not want. As contact cement does not take dye, how the heck do I remove the contact cement without having to take a chunk of leather out of my project. Too scared to use methylated spirits as I do not know what it may do the leather or dye. Tried sandpaper with limited success. Any other ideas? thanks in advance ...p.s. do not scratch nose with contact cement on finger you lose flesh!! ~)
  15. Love it hope the wife doesn't see the message or you might be sleeping with the bears lol
  16. The problem that I had with the sewing is that the hide is very "bumpy" and these bumps would push the thread in different directions then what I wanted so I would have to use the needle to push the thread back in place, mind you I used a simple saddle stitchx3 so that I KNOW that its not going to come undone lol
  17. Thanks Monica the stitching was a honestly a bitch to get to look the way I wanted. I wanted the stitching to "frame" the stingray that is why I went with a white stitch line instead of black. Jon P use a heavy blade even cutting on the flesh side and using a straight edge you will catch one or two spots that the knife will want to either actualy go up and not cut all the way through the stingray or you will catch bits that are really hard to cut through and the blade seems to want to skip to the left or right. I still had to be VERY careful when cutting.
  18. Jon that is awesome how much did that cost you in material I mean for one small hide it cost me 150 au and I will end up just getting that wallet out of it and a bracelet. I found a little bit of a trick to cut close to a straight edge was to cut on the flesh side of things with a VERY sharp knife still ended up having to sand part of it down to make it look straight LOL. I love the look of stingray and I have another idea of doing a stringray/Ostrich wallet
  19. Thank you for the information Nuttish and I will try a few more coats of oxblood to see how deep of a red it will get.
  20. Ok so this is the very first time I have ever worked with sting ray, have an interesting bracelet in the works that my wife wants to do so will take picutres of that when its done. Two things that I have found out about stingray A: It's a real pain in the ass to cut B: It does not burnishes worth a damn you have to use more sand paper than anything else but it does look very nice. C. it does take edge dressing nicely you can't see it in this photo as I had not dressed it with the dressing at the time of the photo will take a better photo shots later on tomorrow. The lining is pig skin, had an idea of mixing a few different exotic skins together to make different wallets such as stingray and ostrich or something along that line. So my question for everyone is has anyone else worked with exotic leathers, if so what was it and name two things you learned about that leather to help us newbies out when it comes to exotic leather.
  21. line the pocket with either copper mesh or aluminium foil either will work.
