Twisty metallic threads benefit from being fed through a piece of polystyrene before they get to the machines thread guides..Thread a standard hand sewing needle with your thread as it comes off the spool, pierce it through a piece of scrap polystyrene, small block , 5cm x 5cm and 2cm thick will do, then feed the thread which comes out of the other side of the polystyrene block along the thread path in the usual manner..The polystyrene will get pulled against the first thread guide ( usually a vertical polished bar ) and will "stay" ( if it doesn't, rig something up so that it does, otherwise it will get pulled along until it does, probably at the tension discs, will still work, but will be distracting ) there with the thread running through it..You'll probably need to adjust your tension after adding this as the "drag" ( tension ) will be increased even before it gets to the tension discs. Metallic threads are the absolute worst for twisting and kinking..the above might work for your problem.. HTH :)

FYI One of Facebook's co-founders, Chris Hughes, believes Facebook has become so big and powerful* that it's time to break it up. *It's influence and power are extremely far reaching, anti-leather is a tiny, tiny facet of it's power and influence over what people see, read, believe, accept, want, do not want. Worth a read. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/09/opinion/sunday/chris-hughes-facebook-zuckerberg.html

Sewing Machine for Sewing Custom Sneakers

If you make these,as you admit "fakes" you'd better put a lot of money aside for when LVMH catch up with you..It isn't because "everyone is doing it" or because "kids are spending an extra $100 to have fake fashion fabric on their vans" that it makes it either right or wise to make fakes. of other peoples designs. I'd rather be honest than pretend to be blissfully ignorant that I was making fakes..- 40 replies

Thanks Matt S..useful to know if / when I order internationally from ebay or Amazon..( I'll test each of them to see if it is offered to customers based in France ) fredK re a.They should be giving you their VAT number automatically if they are charging it, whether or not you asked for it, it is the law..Plus, if the UK tax man ever asked you ( within the next two years ) what you did with the £88.00 ( that being 20% VAT part of the £440.00 that you paid Tandy ) even if you are not going to be claiming it back..you'd need their VAT number to prove that you didn't spend the £88.00 on Hookers, blow, and booze..or just waste it :) HMRC etc would always ( if they decide to check your "books" ) rather make it your fault, if they wonder where your money went ( you are "to hand", than Tandy's fault , Tandy are "far away", and certainly HMRC never allow it to be their fault ) .. re b. You are lucky..when I lived and ran businesses in the UK..I had to keep receipts etc for far longer..Last UK LTD I had , ( while living here in France ) I shut it down as soon as the Brexit result came in..Here paperwork has to be kept for an average of 6 years..some slightly shorter, some longer, much longer..Even when one is not in business..We've got 3 metres of shelves of box files..The guy with the villa across from ours has an entire room dedicated to his paperwork..and he was never in business ( veterinary inspector for French ministry of Agriculture..retired ) ..land of paper work we live in.. Back to subject...are you happy with what they sent you ?

That is interesting, I hadn't heard of that ( I don't buy much on ebay or Amazon, as "imports" ) I think I'll phone some of the people that I do import from and ask them to see if their DHL or the shippers that they use for groupage ( so as to use DHL, but much cheaper ) offer this..If I pay the DHL rates at my end via an account in France , prior to incoming shipping, it can cost me as much as 4 times the price* that the exporters pay DHL in their countries to ship the same goods, in the same planes, on the same routes, to me ..So, I usually pay them the extra for "inc shipping via DHL" and let them pay DHL ( or whoever does the DHL groupage in their country) in advance at their end. *DHL France have told me that I'm not supposed to know how much other people ( in France or other countries pay for shipments from anywhere to anywhere ) pay for DHL , this despite the "local" DHL rate cards being available on line in many countries via the DHL websites in those countries..

Lucky man..( there is an expression re the luck of us Irish ) I hope UK customs continue to be nice to you in such a way*.. Now..go buy a scratch card or two ..whilst you are on a roll.. :) edited to add..*that may mean that Tandy charged you inc VAT..did they give you a VAT number on the paper work that was included within the parcel that DHL delivered , ( or was stuck to the outside ) ..You'll need it ( if Tandy charged £440 inc VAT ) in order to reclaim the VAT, if you are registered for VAT... Additional thought, Given the ( eventual ..some day, maybe ) "looming" Brexit, and the as yet unknown ways that may affect NI, worth keeping any and all paperwork relating to anything imported from anywhere and exported to anywhere, even other EU countries..you never know..

Mostly these kind of threads get left up, they are good reference for anyone else who might be looking at any time in the future at a similar machine from someone else.

The refusal would probably stand if "drop bears" was substituted for "croc".. However, if that "substitution" was made, any subsequent public challenge (such as contacting the press or TV , or other media ) to such a refusal to " prohibited content" would make facebook look very very foolish. :) "Won't someone think of the drop bears" Being held to public ridicule often has more effect on "the powerful" , than other avenues.

^^^ :)) I'm thinking ( looking at both of those images at the top ) You ( OP ) could probably do nearly as well, ( if you really feel that you must :( ) if not better , with a speedy stitcher. There was a girl on here a few months ago ( I forget her "nick" at the moment ) who made "truly" "customised" shoes ( someone was doing carving for her ) and she was adding ( by hand) all kinds of rhinestones, lace, feathers even I think, They were spectacular.."bling", but really spectacular, and original.. Made her own clothes too, talented, sort of Country / "Glam rock" meets Goth.. Reminded me of some of my girlfriends ( one in particular, who could have been her twin sister, was a fashion student at Hornsey College of Art, and later a designer ) back in the late 60s early to mid 70s. Before "Goth" was a thing..or at least before it had a name..- 40 replies

Sewing Machine for Sewing Custom Sneakers

I agree with dikman ( except that I prefer "engineers" boots, or "work boots"..already broke both feet and some toes and had a few nails in my feet, and welding metal burns ) before deciding many years ago, that in the atelier, or anywhere at all outside..metal reinforced soles, metal toe caps, thick protective leather..is the way to go.. Sandals or bare feet in the house..I tried basket boot and sneaker styles, even the well made ones, inside the house..they last less than 3 months on my feet before they collapse or tear, or the soles begin leaving the uppers, or the soles split across the ball of the foot..Apparently they are made to be "looked at", not to be worn. re the photos Looking at the "finish" , the cutting of the pieces, and the sewing and aligning of the pieces on the shoes that they have been added to, is very badly done.. A lot of work ( and risk when LVMH et al catch up to the wearers, sellers, "makers", "customisers"* ) just to wear a fake luxury item.. Badly done fake "bling".. * I use the word "customiser" very loosely given the "tackiness" and the bad finishing, bad stitching..- 40 replies

Unfortunately their comments system is powered by disqus, and to even get to to the point where you can allow the disqus scripts to work ( and for disqus to track you all over the internet ) and to be able to read the comments at all .. you have to have already allowed a whole pile of other scripts, ( 10 in the first stage, none of which are owned by that site, no idea how many in later stages ) , from other tracking companies to be loaded , and to track you all over the web, drop cookies ( some of which are "ever cookies" which do not get destroyed without a lot of work* to stop them re-spawning ) ..so..I'll take your word for it.. Lazy webmasters ( like 99.9999% of webmasters ) using script systems, analytic systems, and comments systems from companies who track you..illegally ..GDPR applies to those sites the moment an EU visitor hits them..instead of using comments systems that don't do any of that ..or "opt you in" or do not allow "disagree"..but only propose "learn more" or I agree", or "by using this site you agree"..all of which are illegal..and make them liable to huge fines and penalties.. btw..Chanel did their first "show" in Paris this week since Karl died..many leather items in the new collection, bags, sacs, jackets ,trousers, and even ( combinations ) jumpsuits..and some leather gourds and other leather accessories. One of the Chanel perfume ads ran on TV earlier here this evening, the one in which Ms Portman wears a Chanel leather jacket whilst advertising their Chanel n°5 perfume. *I could go through and clear the stuff out afterwards..but I've better things to do with the 10 minutes or so it would take of my time..and would have to relaunch this browser..or use another browser on another machine and then clean it..all because of lazy, immoral, or incompetent webmasters. Most if not all of those kinds of "comments" on so called "social media" such as facebook , twitter, and to a huge extent Youtube, are not "opposing" anything, they are just the illiterati typing ( with horrific grammatical or spelling errors all through each phrase and sometimes each word ) their jealousy, hatred and bile , because they can, because they are anonymous, and they know that ( except in very very rare cases ) there will be no consequences to them ..The internet gave the worst parts of humanity a voice, they shout in everyone's faces now all over it..it is like the graffiti that you see which has nothing artistic about, only a bad attempt at a logo for their ego..shouting their name in paint, or commenting by saying something vile, to give them a sense of existing. Hah..my "speelchucker" "flags" ( red underlines ) "illiterati" and "Chanel" as "incorrect"..

Double Row Hook and Awl Post Stitching Machine for Shoes
mikesc replied to JJN's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Does it come with two sets of Hooks and awls ? Or whatever chain stitchers like that use where a lockstitcher would use hook(s) ..if so, it would need two needles, two thread tension systems, two of "everything" in the thread( s) path(s) ?..Is there space in that short pedestal for two "whatevers" ? Ah..reading the link to Puritan, they make machines that run ( for the decorative lines on the uppers ) upto to 4 needles ! But only one single needle does the welts...so you'd have to "go around" twice very carefully , to get two parallel stitching lines on the welts.. All becomes clear when you go to puritan and read the "spec sheets" and the features.. http://puritanindustries.net/features.htm Wish I was in "the Northwest"..I'd be able to think of a use ( justification to the distaff side and the tax man ) for one..I'm sure :) Looks like turbotexas was right and I and others in that thread were wrong, there is ( almost) a "beastie" that can do double ( and upto 4 ) rows at once, not on the welts in one pass, although maybe it the uppers were flexible enough to be pulled out of the way ? -

Interesting, I wonder how you'd move the needle and awl ( and whatever it has that resembles a hook ? ) over to the other side to sew the second row after you'd sewed the first one ?.. Seems very cheap "Leather Sewing Machine - $1200 (North Portland)Leather Sewing Machine - $1200 (North Portland)" for something that heavy duty ( and heavy) especially with "clean, well maintained and in good working order." and " Happy to deliver anywhere in the Northwest." -
how to change the length of the stitches
mikesc replied to Chamod's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
If you are not going to be using it, you can take it off ( the blade, not the lever and mechanism ) in case it is sharp enough to cut you, but, you'll probably lose it if you do..Or you can always use a piece of the thin plastic temporary binder channel , that is used to hold two pieces ( or a few pieces of paper ) together along their edges..Put it over the "knife" edge to protect your fingers from it..if you can't find that..some Duct tape wrapped around it neatly two or three times will work.. -

Mr Beam 2 + some leather bottle craftmanship
mikesc replied to Sensor's topic in 3D Printers and Lasers
Sorry, never used one of theirs ( I think ?, I've used and owned lot of airbrushes, may have forgotten , getting older by the minute ;)..I currently have a bunch of Paasches, some Iwatas, some EFBEs, some Rotrings (was Conopois when I got mine ) , some Azteks, couple of Aerographs...and some that I can't remember the names of, out in the atelier, nearly 10 pm here, cooking dinner , log fire is lit, so I'm not going out to look tonight. :) For dyeing you want a broad spray..( like the VLS gives ) not at all the same type of airbrush , nor needle, tip combination that you'd use for painting realistic eyelashes or hair or fur at life size or smaller. But a double action is always better than a single action for fine control , even if the control is of "amount of dye or paint spraying" and not the width of the line you are drawing..- 9 replies

Dinosaurs and oil are from different periods in time..Hence they are not at the same positions in the strata..There is also erosion , and geological upheavals to be taken into account, most oilfields drill were drilled less than a kilometre down.. Edited to add ..apparently the average is now a little less than 2km down..But the different geological time periods and strata is the reason that they are not at the same levels as dinosaurs still holds..Some areas that nowadays have no, or very little oil, once had huge amounts, relatively near the surface, even by today's standards of "oil fields", but it was not geologically trapped..Complex subject.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geologic_column Back to the original one re "leather goods bad".. Natalie Portman advertises at the moment for Chanel..( she is "their girl" this year, and was last year ) who make luxury goods including Leather sacs and bags, and watch straps..they even have a perfume called "cuir" ( leather ) .. https://www.chanel.com/us/fashion/small-leather-goods/c/1x1x2/ Also a very extensive line of vintage leather wear including coats and jackets.. Hypocritical much eh ?.. The lady looks great, but is definitely either "hard of thinking", or doesn't really care as much as she would have some believe, as long as the check from Chanel clears..
