  1. Yep, I didn't know I would have to learn to sharpen when I started in leather. Just one of the many techniques you have to aquire along the journey. Most of my sharpening goes to my Kalamazoo 1x 42 belt sander. It makes life so much easier. I think it cost me about 300 bucks, but it was a great investment. I'm sure it will outlast me.
  2. I am no expert at all. And really don't know anything about this particular machine. I looked it up though. Looks like it has maybe a 1/4" lift. That will not see cowboy rigs or harnesses. It seems to be for upolstery. (Spelling?) It also appears to be only needle feed, not a compound walking foot with needle feed. Most folks use the compound walking foot with needle feed, bottom feed, and outside alternating presser foot. Hence the term triple compound feed. All this doesn't mean it won't sew leather. It just means it has it's limits and capacities. In the range of sewing it is meant for it looks like an industrial beast. This range is going to be wallets, sails, upolstery, and thinner flat goods. Anytime you are looking at leather sewing you will want to consider using a digital servo motor with a speed reducer. This will slow things down while adding torque to pierce the leather. 110v or 220v really doesn't come into play. Use what is readily available in your home or shop. An expert will be along sometime today to help you along.
  3. Interesting post, and welcome aboard. What size shafts do the hover boards run? Sounds like a good motor for a low speed burnisher.
  4. Try contacting Black River Laser. I bet she has an idea for ya.
  5. Nope it's not big enough for 346. You can only run a certain amount of range on any given machine.
  6. The manual should pretty much be the same. I think the main things that changed over the years were the lubrication system and the reverse lever. The needles are 135x17. The machine will run up to 138 thread. You will see it mentioned that it will handle 207. That is not exactly true. You can run it on top, but no bigger than 138 on the bottom. (So what's the point, I say). How am I doing so far @wiz?
  7. @hwinbermuda, here are some more pictures to clarify what I am doing with the full sides.
  8. His name is Jim. We worked on the wind turbines together out west. I wouldn't want to post his last name here without permission.
  9. A good friend of mine was the train club president in Allentown.
  10. Another extraordinary piece, Mike.
  11. I think I remember reading that some foreign tanneries use urine in their vegtan. Not sure if it's true, but I have read it here several times. The smell is liable to return when you wet the leather.
  12. I whipped out all these shorter straps in about 2 hours. I still have to cut and punch them though.
  13. The hooks are actually a brand of wall hanger for pictures. I'll take a better picture when I have a side hanging up. My original plan was french cleats with clamps attached, but necessity is the mother of invention. And like Red Green always said "now remember folks, this is only temporary............ unless, it works." The strap cutter clamped to the bench is what is working for the smaller pieces.
  14. Here is my bastardized version of this table. And, I figured out a bonus trick for the strap cutter. I won't say I invented it, but I have never seen this done or mentioned anywhere. It works really well for smaller strap goods. Things about 3 square feet or so. Here is a trick for cutting on a narrow table. I'm using monkey hooks picture hangers. I just stab them thru the leather and wall where I need them. This gets the rest of the leather out of the way. And here is the new contraption... The straight edge isn't necessary to run the strap cutter like this, but I was taking scrap and straightening it on the left and then running it thru the strap cutter on the right side so the clamp is just running double duty. This worked like a champ.
  15. Bump for future pictures, if I can get this version of photo resizer to work.
  16. I think craftool USA is older and craft Japan are supposed to be pretty decent. (I think)
