It is a regular saddle stitch as far as I know, I use two needles and an awl. Not sure what a half stitch is. I think the biggest thing for me to get the separation is size and angle of the hole relative to the size of the thread. I think folks consider this a "French" style stitch, as compared to the "British" style stitch where the threads touch but maintain the angled aesthetic. The "American" stitch seems to be set in a groove and have a straight lay. I've been working to get any of the three looks, and maintain the same look on the backside of the stitch. Has not been easy to figure out without some direct instruction - an apprenticeship would have probably made things much easier! I have tried making a video, with varying degrees of success. When I get an opportunity, I will try to post one, it may be a few weeks... YinTx -

The top has smaller marks from the pricking iron than the bottom, and is 7SPI vs 4mm. Both use the same thread, but different stitching technique. I don't have anything to stitch just now, but when I do, what are you looking for in the video, retiredff? YinTx

Hahahah... normally, I'm a sucker for staring at the stitching to see if there is something I can learn from to improve my own work. This time, I was so entranced with the imagery in the leather that I didn't even realize it was stitched until I read the comments! Great work, and the stitching is pretty dang good too, so no frettin there! thanks for sharing! YinTx -
Colin, Thanks for the positive comment, yes I agree lining items makes them look more finished, but also more difficult to make (and more expensive to make). But each item I do is art for me, not production runs, so I try to make what is pleasing to my eye first and foremost. Sometimes I get it right, sometimes not so right. YinTx -
A lot. and I just finished stitching another black and blue belt for myself, changed it up again. Hard to describe details, but basically how I used the awl, the pricking iron I used to mark the leather, and the order of the needles/thread as well as how I snugged the stitch into the hole. I'll put pics up when I've finished trimming the loose ends and punching the hole for the buckle. YinTx -
Those are great bags, but I have a question: by edge work, do you mean stitching? It looks like I see holes for sewing, but no thread... or do you not plan to stitch? Or am I just not seeing it? The three tone dye is a cool effect, and I like the image tooled in the center too! YinTx

Yes, the thread size versus hole size makes a huge difference. In this case, the 332 thread is about 0.7mm, or 0.028". I still used a larger awl on this to get the look. Glad the photos are useful. There is a section that has different thread sizes in different pricking iron marks for reference. Do you have pics of your work anywhere? YinTx -

It really depends on what I am working on. The large messenger bag with the heavier linen thread I did with the Abbey England iron. The Kyoshin Elle is really nice for finer threads at 7spi and I have used it on belts. I have used the Euro style ebay irons on the phone sleeves I made, and I liked the way they came out. The punches make consistent stitches, but I don't use them very often because I enjoy using the awl. If I didn't use an awl, I am sure I would be making copious use of them. Not sure if that helps you at all, lol. The Kyoshin Elle irons have been my go to irons, but I lost one in the fire. I found the other in the ashes, but it was in rough shape. I've been trying to replace it, no luck. YinTx -
I really appreciate the videos you have been putting out. Things you may think are simple because you've used them for or done them for years are for some of us a revelation, because we've never been around it, have never seen it or heard of it. Occasionally, a "duh" kinda revelation, like I shoulda thought of that, but thats the beauty of it. Things others have figured out I can learn from, and move on to figuring something else out. And I like learning something in 5 minutes, because again, I can go practice it, then go on and learn something else. So, really, Thank You! YnTx

This was an older belt I had made, and I am quite certain it was 332 thread, not 532 thread. At any rate, I have been using 7SPI pricking irons to mark the leather, and a very old German awl blade to make the holes for this particular thread size, since it is a larger blade than my Blanchard. I started about a year ago, with about a 6 month absence so I feel I have a long way to go with improving my stitching. Thank you for the compliment, keeps me motivated to keep learning, practicing! First "real" Project - Simple Wallet

I actually noticed the beveled edges right away, and thought it was a neat touch vs. the square and round options out there, so I'd say keep it that way if you like, or adopt the rounded look if you prefer it. The long stitch around the corner does stand out in a not so good way to me tho...otherwise, looks like it came out really nice! YinTx -
