  1. Nice solution!
  2. Thread looks fine for that hole size to me. Did the needles bind much or slide through easily?
  3. Well, I realize it is a small test, but if it is an indication of your skill level you are doing very well. The stitching looks great and the edges are super.
  4. I saw the Roma when I was there a week ago. Looks beautiful in your pics. Thanks for the info because I'm going to be doing a lined belt later this year after I drop 20 or so lbs. Based on your example I'm tempted to do a raised belt now. Make sure to show us the completed pics!
  5. The sample turned out great! What did you use in the middle?
  6. You can use denim as stated above. I save old blue jeans for projects. I've lined wallets with it and it works great. Since I don't have a sewing machine, I temporarily hem with the rolls of heat- activated tape. Just fold the denim with the strip inside and then iron it. Comes out perfectly. Could use the double stick tape too I suppose. In your case, make sure both edges of denim are hemmed and make them slightly narrower than the leather. Burnish your edges before stitching! Cement the denim to the leather prior to stitching up. When worn, the denim should not even show.

I would like to see a tutorial as well.
  8. Agreed! Nice stuff there.
  9. This is a shot of the inspiration...
  10. Yes, sort of an "H" shaped cut. I thinned the flaps down and when tucked they don't bulge much.
  11. Mark, this is a bund style strap I made up based upon one I saw in a Tudor watch ad. I reverse engineered it, making some modifications along the way. The straps holding the watch fold back and under and don't show from underneath.
  12. Are you doing a shoulder strap and handles or just handles?
  13. You are right! Love your work though.
  14. You might experiment with using a groover. It will take a bit of the slant of the stitches away but I think the overall look is better and it helps the stitches sit down and that will cut down on wear and tear.
  15. Mark, are you using a stitching wheel and awl?
  16. Are you using a stitching groover? Doesn't appear so. You might experiment a little with a deeper groove. Also, try flattening your stitches with a smooth-faced hammer. Helps them lie down
  17. Mark, I like the color combination. Also it is cool the way you blended a Nato strap idea with a bund style band. Keep up the good work!
  18. Blue duck makes a great point about asking the wife. I made a purse for my youngest daughter and she loves it. But when my wife and I discussed me making one for her, she said, "I don't want those metal things connecting the strap to the bag". If I had proceeded I would be remaking the purse! So show her options that you can make without too much difficulty. Good luck! BTW, Porter's videos are great. Love the way he says gussy.
  19. Very nice! Love the color, very rich with lots of depth. Would like to see a different pic of the inner flap. I can see some dividers or pockets, but it isn't clear how they function. Oh, the stitching is awesome too.
  20. The darker one is very supple, gonna make the wife a hand bag out of it.
  21. Springfield leather has some, don't know what tannery. I bought two colors recently. I call it pebble grain.
  22. What a shame as the interior looks so good. +3 on binding the edge. I don't think camoflaging is the way to go. Cover it.

Im not the expert on finishes, but I think the glassy look is typically achieved by using a high gloss sealer. What you are doing looks good enough and durable to me.

To my eye it looks great! What are you doing different?
  25. Not sure, but there are many on the forum that make leather goods for bikers. Hopefully they can chime in.
