Kings county leather, Even though it says watch straps, there is a list of uk suppliers in ...

Jonathan, British leather or British made - That there is a can of worms. The trade descriptions act 1968 states that: "36 Country of origin. (1)For the purposes of this Act goods shall be deemed to have been manufactured or produced in the country in which they last underwent a treatment or process resulting in a substantial change. (2)The Board of Trade may by order specify— (a)in relation to any description of goods, what treatment or process is to be regarded for the purposes of this section as resulting or not resulting in a substantial change; (b)in relation to any description of goods different parts of which were manufactured or produced in different countries, or of goods assembled in a country different from that in which their parts were manufactured or produced, in which of those countries the goods are to be regarded for the purposes of this Act as having been manufactured or produced." could depend if tanning and/or currying is seen as making the most substantial change. Taking leather and making it into a watch strap must be a significant change so the straps would be 'made in Britain' and the leathergoods be from British suppliers or sources. probably best to speak to someone professional in trading standards. Hope my input produces more light than heat. Gary

Neatsfoot is made from extracting the fats/oils/gelatine and so on from cows' feet only and the elements are, presumably, in historically accepted proportions. AFAIK, tallow is made from refining suet (the fat from around the kidneys) of cows and sheep. If a whole cow was boiled down there would be all the other fats and in, presumably, different proportions from just the feet.

Sorry this list isn't exhaustive but I was a bit short of time and only managed to look at the first page of internet search results for 'UK leather supplier'. aa crack metropolitan sedgewick abbey artisan leather pittards le prevo j wood neumann a w midgeley ebay amazon

I was wondering if you had any contact details for this chap please? Gary

Thought these two links may reduce the likelihood of repetition for more recent members. And nostalgia for others.

gary replied to Mayathebee's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Try http://www.leprevo.co.uk/fittings.htm for the decorative plates. In the UK but I don't know where you are located. -

Just had a quick look through this again and thought I'd better clarify, The English Leather Company does have a 300 sq ft/colour minimum for their English Bridle (quote and their emphasis) Hides & Thicknesses Butts/Bends: 2.0 – 2.2mm / 3.25 - 3.5mm / 3.75 - 4.0mm Sides: 1.8 - 2.0mm / 2.0 – 2.2mm / 2.5 - 3.0mm Shoulders: 2.0 – 2.2mm / 3.2 - 3.5mm 5ft Bridle Butts: 3.5 – 4.0mm Stirrup Butts: 4.5 – 5.0mm MINIMUM ORDER QUANTITY: 300 SQ. FT. PER COLOUR (unquote) Here's the link http://www.theenglishleather.com/english-bridle I just thought, as you said you were new and just dabbling, that you would probably be more interested in these cuts than 22 sq ft minimum of 2 sides of bridle butt. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough.

I have heard that Marcus Gear (http://www.marcusgear.co.uk/) splits leather. I haven't tried them yet but another Brit may dive in. There's also AA Crack (http://www.aacrack.co.uk/) who have a good selection but it may not necessarily be sourced in England. Gary

Looking for: Medieval hardware horse headstall, halter
gary replied to Erystawi's topic in Hardware and Accessories
You might want to try Abbey. http://abbeyengland.com/Store/CategoryID/375/Level/a/catpagesize/0 They have a mixture of stuff, some of which may help you. I don't know of any specific supplier in mainland Europe but someone from there may chime in. A good time for you to get stuff from the UK as the pound currently looks like Bob Cratchit's take home pay after stoppages. -

Ditto. Well said, Zigzag. Tholek, I just had a look at your site - quite a lot of ill-informed misinformation.- 33 replies

Where is the best place to buy all types of leather in the UK?
gary replied to Tholek's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
http://leatherworker.net/forum/topic/73091-uk-suppliers/#comment-479086 Try this link. It should take you to a fairly recent post that has a few answers. The original post is 'UK Suppliers' on 2 Dec. -
I hope Metropolitan works out for you. I have never used them, it was Hendreforgan who recommended them. I had a look at their site and I may give them a try as well.

No pun intended I presume.

http://www.leprevo.co.uk/hides.htm http://www.aacrack.co.uk http://www.claytonleather.com http://www.gradeleather.co.uk http://www.je-sedgwick.co.uk/category/bridle-leather/ http://www.metropolitanleather.com http://www.jtbatchelor.co.uk Among others and worth a try. Depends exactly what cut you want. There are quite a few others out there, such as the English Leather Co, but they have a minimum order of 300 square ft. Gary

This is the sort of thing you are up against at $10.99. And that's with free shipping to the UK. You may wish to check your previous post where NVLeatherWorx took the time to give some sound guidance.

Sorry, NVLeatherWorx, wasn't replying to you. I was responding to the OPs search for other designs not commenting on materials or the market.

There are two types of punch to make Sam Browne stud/button holes. The round and the 'pippin' . If you're only ever going to do a few then they are expensive and the hole punch with chisel method is fine. If you're doing many then a purpose-made punch makes sense.

Similar thing happened to me a couple of years ago. Went to buy 2 x 4s - had to ask for 50x100s (even though they are really 51 x 102) 'cos that's how they size them now. When they were delivered they were undersized. Queried that and I was told "...they are CLS". ? "Canadian Lumber Standard". He couldn't explain it but it appears to mean that maximum size is 2x4 and they can be a fair bit smaller. And you can't get a cord of wood now. Seems the standard sizes are 'Small Trailer', 'Big Trailer' and 'Back of the Lorry Full'.

Good speed here Scotland, about 1 sec and 3 secs respectively.

BSF was, I believe, British Standard Fine. There was also BSW (Whitworth) and BSP (British Standard Pipeline). I was also brought up on pounds, shillings and pence but had to change at school when we decimalised. Later, when I went into nursing we had to learn to convert drachms and minims and so on into SI units. Also had to learn some Latin to translate prescriptions. However, it's nearly 50 years since we went decimal and most people are still happy with feet and inches. And road distances are still in miles, the warning markers for level crossings are still at 80 yard increments and most things are packaged by the dozen. We never really got our heads round this funny 'European' system.
