Hi all, I am making a Civil War era cap pouch. I am going to use it for metal detecting as a finds pouch, I am not making it for a reenactment pouch. I do want to keep it as authentic as possible. I always had a problem putting a groove in my holsters, I thought that you had to do it or the stitches would wear. I messed up more than one holster by grooving, especially on the back side. I have to try one without using a groover.

I just spoke to Hannah at the Hide House, she is sending me a catalog and mentioned it is for wholesale. I never purchased anything from them before. Jim

That is very nice work Chief. I have a question? I never made a guitar strap before. I want to make one for a present. He has a Gibson acoustic guitar. How do the sizes run? Does it depend on the size of the man? I don't want to ask him. What would suggest? Jim

I just want to thank you all for your post on this subject matter. You saved me a lot of wasted time. I am planing to set up a table at a local Flee Market. This is a well known one in NJ, it is opened on weekends during the summer as far as I know. My plans were to take a few dozen belts that were all finished, except size. I am looking to make a little money to help pay for my materials.I have no notion on making money on this venture, I am only trying to break even. As you all can tell, I am a new comer to this fantastic art form. I love the work you all do, thank you all for being so helpful. After reading your post and seeing some of the things that you are making and selling, I have to rethink my strategy.Snubbyfan, you have some great stuff. Thank you Clay, that really helps me understand what is going on. It really gets expensive buying stamping tools. Every time I look at a pattern for belts that I want to try, they are using different stamps. I feel that I have to get the same stamp or it won't come out right. I realize you don't have to have the same one. I have the biggest problem with beveler, is there a standard one that can get you through most of the Sheridan style? I understand there different sizes that I will need. What beveler's did you use for the work above?

That might work, I would have to experiment with it.

I use Tan Kote to the back of my belts and collars. I apply with a clean piece of cloth. I rub it in good and let it dry. After it dries ,I rub it to see if any dye comes off. I haven't had a problem. Jim

Thank you Jim, I made a belt from 24" to 70" If they are larger then that, they won't need a belt. Jim

Hi All, The object in this post is a Pin Pointer used for metal detecting. I have made a few different style holsters for it. All of them were wet molded with a belt clip on the back or a strap sewn to the back for a belt loop.Their are a lot of different style gun holsters, so why not make a different style for a pin pointer? That is why I am asking for your help. Is there a better way? Jim

gmace99 What kind of wood are they using in the video to mold the leather around for the saddle? I am asking because one day I will attempt to make a case for my metal detector. Jim

If you make one that slides over a straight edge to make the first cut on a double shoulder, I would buy one tomorrow. Put the straight edge on top of the double shoulder, slip the cutter onto the straight edge, in this case a 6' ruler, put the blade down in a cutting position and slide it down. It sounds easy, all you need is the tools and skill. I wish I had them. Jim
