  1. I think it looks fantastic and I know she will be proud of it. Keep up the good work
  2. Barry King makes a line 24 and a line 20 snap setter that after you use it you will never use anything else and they are reasonably priced.

    Good tools?

Depending on what kind of leather “tools” you are talking about! Stamps try Barry King Clay Miller, Bob Beard, Chuck Smith, swivel knives try the Same plus Leather Wranglers and Henley, leather Wrangler has good knives. Osborne has some good tools. There are a whole lot of custom makers of all kinds of leather tools.
  4. Welcome aboard, never to old, I did some leather work 30 years ago, raised kids, worked etc. got back into it about 2 years ago now at soon to be 72 Iam working 4 to 8 hrs a day on leather and loving it. I enjoy the carving and stamping the most but it’s all very enjoyable
  5. I have a lot of different swivel knives by different makers guess you could say I collect swivel knives, all can cut leather, some better than others. All take some getting use to. About the time I think one is better than the other I try a different brand and after getting use to it I think it’s better. I think all the higher end knives are great, the blade, sharpness and barrel size you get use to seems to effect me more than who made it. I prefer 3/8” barrel with 1/4” straight blade in most all for carving, a little larger barrel and blade for long straight border type lines. Chrispness of stamps is a whole other story, I don’t think you will get Bob Park type carving or stamping with craftool swivel knife and stamps. Just my 2 cents..
  6. It should have a cutting mat on it, paper when dying, gluing, etc. but I would definitely use it. You will get scratch’s, maths, scuffs etc. but it will sure make a nice work surface.
  7. Buy a good swivel knife to start with, you can buy a Barry King for about the same price as a craftool pro from tandy and. Barry’s blade will be sharp to start with, just strop once in awhile. I have numerous brands and sizes I have used for years including King, Henley, Beard, Smith, Miller, Stolman and others, they are all very good knives. Practice, practice, then practice some more. I prefer a 1/4” straight blade with a 3/8” barrel, that is probably the most popular combination. Hope this helps!
  8. Tandy has a list of stamps of old and the current alternatives. I think it’s under Tandy’s website.
  9. What do you have you want to get rid of? Thanks Rodney
  10. How many of the stamps are Kings and how many are craftool? I am interested in all! Thanks Rodney
  11. Practice practice and practice, then practice some more! It will get a lot easier, just don’t give up. You can hit the basket stamp kinda easy the fist lick just to set it then make sure it’s in the same spot and hit a second time or more. Always try to hold the tools straight up and down. Casing leather takes practice also, I spray mine with water then let dry some till it turns ack to natural color. For beveling and background it will need to be a little drier than when using your swivel knife. Just keep going it will all fall in place.
  12. Barry King tools are very good, so is Clay Miller, Chuck Smith, and of course Bob Beard but they are hard to come by.
  13. I use Barry’s mauls, and love them, I have 16, 24, & I think a 32oz. Look on Barry’s web site for prices and pictures. I highly recommend all his tools.
  14. If you haven’t seen Bob Parks work you are missing true art, same for Chuck Smith, talked to both at Wishita Falls show last week. Super nice people.
  15. I didn’t see him but that doesn’t mean he absolutely wasn’t there! It was a great show and seemed to have very good attendance.
  16. Rodney Great show, bought a Beard swivel knife, chuck smith sk, Clay Miller sk, Barry king sk, and a few king stamping tools, lots of good stuff there. Ran out of money to quick. Talked with Bob Park, what an artist, Jesse Smith, terrific saddle maker. Everything was great, can’t wait till next year.
