I would take a small peice from an end, and cut it off, oil it with either neets foot, or lexol, and see if it helps.... Post a pic when you can.... -
Arley, Dont look at this forum like some out there where the newbie is treated bad. That just does not happen here. Several people have looked at this thread, but no one had replied because those of us who have, have not had anything constructive to post. I know nothing about braiding. But, there are several people here that do, and I am sure that once they read this thread, they will happily post and try as best as they can to help you out. There is no such thing as a stupid question on this board. And even if the question has already been asked 50 times, it will eventually get answered with more than a customary "Use the Search Button" reply you might be used to getting on other forums. Someone replying might just give you a link to another thread where the question was answered, but they wont be mean to you for asking a question that has already been asked. This site has people from all around the world; literally. And people on this site cover almost every aspect of leather there is. Just be patient, If you intend to work leather, you MUST have patience. Else wise you will not be able to enjoy working leather. Be well Mike

I have had this issue, and either brought it to this board or to Flasah, or both.... I will look for pix later if I even took some... Thing is, I was applying the antique with a dobber, and the very first place I hit with it would splotch, and I believe this is from the oil in the antique.... I later tried to slather antique onto a project in five or six areas, and all the areas I globbed it onto splotched.... even when i slathered it around evenly and left it sit for a short period before wiping it off..... I now use VIVA paper towels to apply both all-in-one, and antique. And have a clean one right there to wipe off the excess immediately.... and I do not put the antique on thick, I do it as thinly as possible. I also do like broncobuster does and start at the outer edge and work my way into the center. I have not had problems with splotching since doing it like this.

For very thin stuff, I use my tapping tool: http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores...uctId=100061497 For thicker stuff, if I dont already have the right size tap and bit, I pick up one of these, but you would have to buy the tap handle separately like the one in the combo below: http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores...ocStoreNum=1769 And here is a set of taps and bits... but the drill bits are all purpose... not specifically for metal.... http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores...uctId=100081358 Take the screws/fasteners with you and get them to put it on a gage to match it up with the tap you need. -

I dont know about speeds... but I got my 8" from harbor Freight and the sharpening system from Weaver fits it great... I actually got it from a different source and saved a few dollars, but it is the same sharpening system.... I have used it to sharpen everything I own.... including a sword I have.... -
I could not find one on Tandy's site, but here is a 1/4 inch oblong punch: https://www.siegelofca.com/itemdetail.asp?prodid=402

Mike, I also got the CD, thanks, I will see about getting it up if there are problems. -
as far as i can say.... yeah, just the same but it is round.... i sharpen mine on my sharpening system that goes on my bench grinder..... and i do it just like any other blade...
-
Having used both, I am sold on the round more now than the slot. As BS says about the strength of the round hole verses a slot is true, and when you hit a weak point in the leather and you pull on your lace to make it nice and tight, you are more apt to tear the slot than you are the round hole. As He also stated, you use a hole just slightly smaller than the lace (depending on how many times the lace will be going through the hole also plays part in the size of the hole) and it does cover the holes.... Also, finish the leather after you punch your holes so that the inside of the holes are dyed the same as the rest of the surrounding leather lending a camouflage that also hides the holes.... here is a pic of a piece I just finished the other day and used round holes with a round braid.... the holes do not look out of place in my opinion. You can see the holes, but they dont look out of place. It is just a matter of taste....

Kani, I would be happy to critique your work but you didnt upload anything..... Once you use the interface to select the picture you want to upload, you have to hit the next button that says upload.... Here is a short walk through: Click New Thread, or Add Reply when wanting to post a pic or other file, then click "Browse" Select the file you want to upload: Now Hit Upload, and you will see this: Then if you want to place the uploaded file into your post at a certain place, put the courser where you want the upload, hit the down arrow where it says "Manage Current Attachments (# of attachments) and click the name of the attachment you want to place in the text like this: Hope this helps you and anyone else.... Also, you cannot upload any pix larger than 2megs, and it will not tell you there was an error, so that might have been the issue too... I have done that, thought it uploaded and hit the "Add Reply" at the bottom of the page and there was no picture.... So I had to edit the pic to make it smaller.....
