This was ordered by a guy down in Florida for his Indian. I couldnt find the brackets I needed so he sent me the old $20 dollar windshield bag he had on his bike.... I canibalized it and put this bag together.... Tell me what you all would charge for this if you made it for a customer... I do not have any idea what a fair market price would be. Thanks Mike

I have never ordered leather before... What is the best place to order from, meaning the quality of service and the quality of the leather and the all around price.... I am looking at doing motorcycle bags and wonder what the best cut and brand and thickness you fine folks would recoment as well... Thanks all Mike

True, Also... if you are making bags and end up using a thicker hide than the clasp will allow (the clasp wont fit through the hide... and wyou are going to tool the leather.... skive it where the clasp will go through the leather before you tool it... I did a nice larger bag for my bike, and I tooled it nice with the tri weave stamp... then when it was time to add the clasp I found that it would not fir through the hole that the hide was too thick for the clasp, so I had to skive it some in that area... well... it didnt occure to me that the area would be very think in the deep parts of the stamping, and when I tried to skive around the hole I punched for the clasp and found real quick that the leather in the deep parts of the tooling was very thin... and I was left with a piece I could not use for the bag I was making... I had to start all over... sucked... but lesson learned...

Something else you can use, and I use it on alot of things, but havent had to use it on surfaces yet (thankfully).... orange cream hand cleaner you get at the automotive store... Get a small tub for 2-2.50 and use it... I had a job making cinnimon altoids when they moved the plant here to the states, and I had to mix the red dye by hand... literally... add teh water to a buchet, and then dump in the bye and put my hand in to mix it... pure dye on the skin... sucked... but I used the orange hand cleaner and always got it off with some effort... on surfaces you can use stiff brushes and such... let us know what works and what doesnt... I learned on my own on this one... DO NOT SKIVE WET... it will stretch... If you are only skiving the edge, here is a tool I use and love when skiving...: http://www.leatherfactory.com/products.asp?number=3001-00 I have used the super skiver: http://www.leatherfactory.com/products.asp?number=3025-00 and I do not like the super skiver... I think it is because of the pulling... but with the Safety Beveler, you pull it too but differently... I use it to skive the whole thing is it is a small enough job. The replacement razor blades arent much either.... Mike

This thread is funny as hell... I never heard about the PETA killings... I have never been hunting in my life... And I will eat deer in a heartbeat... I know where it comes from, and I am glad to eat it, I would reather eat venison than beef... My oldest sister married a certified northern good old boy... and they had two boys... all three men go hunting in what ever season it happens to be... deer, turkey, whatever... My sister fixes the meat and does a nice venison jerkey... A little on the dry side, but good... she sends me a pound every christmas... it lasts me most of the year and then I start giving it to the dog as treats.... The fact that we as a society dont see the things we used to see in a market 100 years ago had alot to do with the mentality of people who are major leftist or rightist... Not just in the market place but the fact that we dont see things as they happen.... it poisons people... I am totally against harming any thing just for the hell of it... Veal... (if it is true how I grew of leaning how veal is raised) is wrong to me... Fattening up a calf that is restricted to standing in one place, and eating and nothing else until it is killed... thats a bit much and I dont eat veal... I dont go throwing pigs blood (from killed pigs) on the side of a building because I dont agree with how something in an industry is done... Hell... i just had a full slab of Sticky Fingers Dry Memphis Ribs today for lunch... In essance, I killed a pig to have some damn good ribs... when I could have had some nasty defencless salad greens... I am pro Life... I do not bomb clinics... and I dont preach it... You have a situation and you hav an abortion, thats between you and whoever... Unless I was the father then I needed to be informed before hand, but still... there is nothing I could do to stop you from doing it... I see the missinformation as a tool for two things... first being raising money from idiots who want to believe what it put infront of them without having the inteligance to investigate the info to see if it is legit or BS.... the second is also to get these same people to become activists in thier brainless army... Lets face it, you start a cult... you feed abunck of people crap, and you know it is crap as you are disahing it out, but you get people coming to you asking for more of this "nothing but crap"... you gotta think to yourself... if these idiots eat this crap... I could get them to eat any crap... and you feed them crap to mold yourself an army of mindless crap eaters.... that are willing to do your bidding because you obvious crap is what they live for... and they will always come back for more.... And, no, if you try to skin an animal while it is alive it will not stand still patiently waiting for you to finish.... when I was 10-12 I was on a farm setting, and a few of the arse kids decided they were going to go out to the pigs and have some fun... I followed along so I could go smoke away from the adults.... whiule these knuckle heads where trying to catch a pig in the mud, and what not, one of them pulled out a knife and decided he was going to try to skin it.... he got ahold of the pig and was able to cut around its neck, and the pig broke his nose, jaw, and knocked him out and gave him a concution, and busted his head open resulting in around 20 stitches.... the farmer had to kill the pig because of the damage the knife did to the pig.... I'd tool that.... I am going to get a bumper sticker made with a picture of a cow, and it saying "Oooh, Baby! I'd tool that!" Hope ya dont mind! LOL

I bought and applied the Aussie at Tandy today.... I did not apply a finish... Veg Tan, tooled, and left to dry, applied neetsfoot oil on both sides, and then allowed to penetrate fro a few hours, then applied Pro Oil Dye, allowed to penetrate, bought the Aussie today and applied it to the leather, and buffed it. The guy at tandy told me when I asked him if it would waterproof the leather, he said, about the only thing that will waterproof leather is vasiline... LOL, then I showed him where on the lable of the Aussie jar it says "waterproof" and he said that it was like Vasiline but had bees wax and some other stuff in it..... I applied the Aussie to the leather using a piece of sheeps whool.

Art, Is this the Aussie you are refering to: http://www.leatherfactory.com/products.asp?number=2199-00 I cant find anything about Pecards on thier site, and they are the only store I have local.... How is this applied? I have tooled, dried, veg tan leather, I applied a few coats of Neetsfoot Oil, then allowed it to penitrate, then used Tandy Pro Oil Dye (black). Now I need to apply the finish... Is the Aussie a finish that I apply now, or do i apply something else like Resoline, or Carnuba or Balm with Atom Wax then apply the Aussie? ???? How is it applied best? Dobber, Rag, wet sponge? Also... once it is done, what would the owner of the piece need to do to it to keep it up? Thanks for the help...

Good tip. I dont like the center hole, so I usually make a pattern out of thick paper, or poster board, and the hole is there, not in the leather, then i lay the cut out pattern piece on the leather, trace it out, and cut it.

Very nice, thanks Art! -
I ahve used it without any bad results... I like it because it gives it a matt finish instead of a gloss...

Sonthing I have done on a beer coaster is covered the bottom of the coaster with Gun T... I mean I covered it... thick.. several layers, then I covered it with black edge kote, several layers while the lower layer was tacky... the final result is a thickish rubbery coating that allos me to place it on a wet bar and not worry about it soaking up the moisture and getting ruined....
