making patterns with the computer
wolvenstien replied to David Bright's topic in Patterns and Templates
The best thing I can think of is to get a Tandy or HideCrafters catalog, and scan the pages with the impressions of the tools and then edit the scan to cut it up into individual pictures of each impression. Then with each in a folder, open your graphix program, and use each pic (saved as gif or jpg) and create your design from there. Some of the impressions you would have to crop real close, but using the impressions I would imagine you could make a decent design on the computer... It would take some time cropping each impression out of the scan and saving each one individually, but I think it might be worth it.... Since I have thought of this... I think I am going to do it myself to add some "leatherwork" to my website background.... Good luck -
when you said it looks like mush... did you mean the leather looked like mush or the mallet? If the leather looked like mush you need to sharpen your punches. I would wager that the punch is dull and is not cutting through the leather when being hit with the mallet.... a sharp punch does not need to be driven through the leather, just tapped...

When I got into leatherwork (craft) around this time last year, I had a few extra dollars and bought the Ultimate Starter kit from Tandy. They have stores all over the place so I went to my local here in Chattanooga and bought it there... http://tandyleatherfactory.com/products.asp?number=55512-01 The list price is 799.99 but you go in and buy a 30 dollar membership (which I need to renew) you get the membership (wholesale) price of 639.99. Some people might say it isnt worth it.... To me starting out, it was very much worth it... there are only a very few things in the kit that I have not used to date. Now I have purchased several more tools in adition to the set, but it gives you everything you need to start out with... all the reading material is good, you get a tooling surface, and a cutting surface and a decent knife with a decent blade, and many other things... I think the only thing in the kit that I really have not used is the sharpening stone which I bought a grinder setup like hidecrafter sells (actually the guy at my tandy has one set up on his work bench there at tandy but he would not tell me where to get it.... but I found it on ebay before I found it at HideCrafter - Hidecrafters catalog can be viewed/downloaded here: http://www.hidecrafter.com/uploads/Hide_Cr...Catalog__10.pdf The sharpener I use is on page 43 on the bottom left. Works great and it can be used to polish other metals other than blades too... Other than that... you will pick up tools and what not as you go... it all depends on what your focus is going to be... Welcome to the forum as well. Mikey Oh... unknown to me when i got it.... all my tools that should have been sharp were not.... and needed to be sharpened and polished out of the box.... no one told me this when i bought my kit.... I learned the hard way....

Yes, Much quieter, when assembled correctly, you turn it on, and it is quieter than a dryer running without clothes in it.... As for the size, both the drills are the same size, the one differance in the two is the chuck and the handle. I think you will like it once you get used to it.

no "chalking" of the eco flo black lik ethe pro oil does? -
Sorry I got to this after you ordered the drill... but you dont want the one you pictured above.... you want this one: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Disp...temnumber=44506 its 10 more, but it has a key chuck instead of the keyless chuck. The reason I cay you want it keyed is because there is a hell of a lot more power with these than you get with a hand drill.... if you tighten it up and try to untighten it with the motor running the keyless is apt to rip a finger off.... Also, they run sales on these all the time.... I would have suggested you talk to one of the sales people and tell them you want one at sale price, but they will dicker with you, then tell them that you will buy the 2 or 5 year extended warrenty.... Thats what I did, bought mine off sale at sale price but I spent an extra 15 or so for the 5 year warrenty.... I dont use mine much... but I bet you will be using your quite alot.... As for it needing to be bolted down... mine is weighted real well... I use it for drilling metal and wood from time to time and I usually pick it up off my work bench and take it out side to a portable benck I set up out there to keep me from having to clean up as much in my garage.... When you get it you will have to assemble it, and put the chuck into it... make sure you have a short piece of 2x4 wood to use to press the chuck into it.... keeps you from maring it and the press plate. Hope this helps...

I have not done it, but there was a comversation I think on this board about a saddle maker who would cut hit sew lines, sew it and then glew and hammer the cut closed. You cant see the thread sewn into the leather and has a greater durability against the threads getting rubbed thin and breaking. As for the type of glue... I would try it with leather weld on a scrap piece and then if it didnt work, use the barge contact cement on a scrap... wet it some after applying the gluw and hammer it closed... You try it let us know your results. Mikey

Usually I have everyone over for ribs and what not off the grill and blow off $500 in overpriced fireworks.... but since I have been out of work for the past year, we are cooking food and nixing the fireworks this year... This will actually be the saturday following.... As for tomorrow, we are going to the wifes familys and spending time there and eating thier food... Happy 4th everyone, and be safe out there too.... lots of folks still think it is cool to shoot of firearms into the air forgetting that what goes up must still come down.... If you are going to shoot off firearms, do it into the ground unless you have something set up to keep the lead from going where it doesnt need to go....

Myself and severla other use this: http://www.createforless.com/products/prod...b8-4ee730823f4d But it isnt for punching holes... just cutting... Use your white poly board for punching holes... Hope this helps... I got mine at walmart, but any sewing/fabric shop would have one I would suppose...

Clay, does Jeff Mosby at Grey Ghost Graphics have a habbit of not replying to email enquaries about getting a quote from him? I have emailed him twice and have not heard from him....

Ok, Background story: June 1st 2006 a friend died in a motorcycle wreck, and his family came down from up north in Novenber to help with setting up a poker run to fund a scholarship that we set up in Bens name at the local collage where he was a student. His family all ride as well, and while Bens brother was here helping set up the poker run, he got to talking to me about the leather work I had done and asked me if I could make a vest for him and the rest of his family with a copy of a tattoo everyone got as a memorial on the back of the vest.... I thought about it, and told him yes.... dumb move on my part... I am not a dress maker and had never done anything like it... Anyway.... I started by doing the memorial on a scrap piece and sent them pictures of it to see if they liked it. They did. I was stuck in trying to resize the Tandy vest pattern to fit this big guy... had no idea, and everything I tried did not work, I had asked several people to guide me and nothing happened in the progress... even got a lady not too far from me to agree to cut the leather and put it all together and put in a lining and everything for me as long as I supplied all materials for only $50.... but being out of work for the past year I could not cover the $50. I finally got a chance... the poker run was upon us and the family was in town to ride in it. I taped several pieces of poster board together and got the brothers vest and laid it out and traced it to give me the exact size he is wearing.... sweet! I did a new carving on 3/4 oz veg tan and used the pattern I traced to cut the chrome tanned cow hide for the vest back... I have come to a stop as I tried to do one of the front sides but the chrome tan is too thick to run through my sewing machine with too many layers... and the front has pockets and what not and it is not coming together too well so i am going to have to re-think the whole front.... actually I am thinking the front piece be a singe piece with pockets sewn onto it.... instead of the three pieces sewn together to form a front side... Anyways... First pic is of the original drawing of the memorial, the second pic is the first memorial on scrap, the third pic is the second on 3/4 oz, and then the back as it is now.... And here is a pic of the back as it sits....

Very nice walk through Don. Is that yellow dye or Cova you used on there?
