i use a belt sander and a block of wood once your patterns are cut out sand them down, or maybe call the company and see if they will take it back and trade you for thinner stuff.

Those are fantastic and will make wonderful gifts! carved letters are hard alot of work there !

A 1000 grit sharpen is mighty polished but that's a good idea I'll be making two belts then lol. after the holidays

i use a 4 x 36 belt sander. with it i can make leather tools and knives, woodworking tools etc, sharpen anything under the sun i use a 1000 grit belt oiled to hone my stuff, and i can also make very awesomely flat and smooth edges on my leather projects all with just a change of a belt in seconds. Probably the most versatile tool in my shop. i have belts from 60 to 1000 grit and for wood, leather and iron. Plus ima thinking i can make a cotton canvas belt for burnishing, got some planning and a holiday to get through first. and it cost less, than one of those wheels that do only one thing.

yup but the good side is they will be cheaper, the right color and you wont be tied to just one size or shape.

if your interested in learning about everything why not learn to make your own patterns, its part of the process? This one would be easy peasy and you have spent a day looking for a pattern that would take less than an hour to make.

Looks pretty simple to make your own, all you need is a radio or wooden copy to size it.. It appears to be only three pieces of leather the strap in back is doubled for a belt loop maybe and is also the bottom of the holster riveted in the front the sides are one strap wrapped around the radio and sewn to the back strap, a leather strap for the snap set and your good to go.

the shaders add depth and form to your flat surface. The main idea is to add the illusion of shape to your object with them. Yes you will need different sizes. The "waffle" type just adds some texture to your object, A flower petal compared to a ruffle in a banner for example. flower smooth, banner rough. However there are no hard and fast rules on how you use these tools most were designed and created by people who had a specific use in their style of art. so the rest of us unless we copy their style learn to adapt them. And to make our own sometimes lol. Practice on every scrap you have and the bellies if you buy full sides, i hate doing the mundane type practice also so i just cut what comes to mind and see how it works. Lifters also make a big dif in the form of your objects and work in conjunction with your shaders to create the three dimensional look. I also practice my designs at least once on scrap before committing to a project, this allows me to practice my tooling, see if the design works, test colors and finishes etc. When first starting one time i did probably a dozen roses before finally doing the project.

Brings back some wonderful memories, I used to watch my mom sew too, she did the same made her clothes and us kids clothes. She always let me help a bit and taught me to sew, knit, cook and crochet. it is i.ve found that if you don't have a lot of extra money and want something nice for your self sometimes you have to make it your self. Then the gained skill allows you to be self sufficient as well as being able to make for others. leather is not the only craft i know how to do lol.
