lol I even made my awl blade. I've never liked the flimsiness of x-acto knives, i have half a dozen of them I've collected over the years but don't use them for leather work. But then again I don't cut a lot of thin leathers. The littler 1/2" blade I made is pretty darn close and will do anything the x-acto can I'll bet.

Its very addicting lol, here is a set of carving tools I made that also work great for leather. the vee gouge and u gouge are great for skiving tight bends. the ferules are 45 acp shells i turned down on the lathe. They also 1/4" d2 rod

actually they work well if you know how to finish the manufacturing process. They cost about a hundred bucks so workmanship isn't figured into cost.

that's a great knife too. I've made all my knives and have plenty but I guess its one of those things a guy cant have to many of. lol

if the wheel wont move then the bobbin shaft or something inside the arm is jammed up. ok if the bearing and shaft its connected to wont move freely back and forth then you have a problem inside the arm. the bearing isn't the problem you should be able to easily move it back and forth. you are going to have to take it apart to figure out what is jammed up.

thanks you can actually work the 1/4" d2 with a map gas torch, I haven't tried the 3/8" but I don't see why not. I've made several small wood chisels and carving tools with this stuff. its great way to learn a bit about the forging process without all the huge blacksmithing tools as well. thank you It is a bit longer than the traditional leather knives but it gives you plenty of room to see what your doing. It feels light and nimble compared to a round knife and will probably replace it in most of its chores. a heck of a lot easier to sharpen lol.

its very nice work and yea I love the fact that each piece is kind of surprise, leather after all is a natural product and no two hides are the same.

interesting design indeed I like it i may have to take a shot at making one similar.

yup it is an awesome push cutter which is how I will mainly use it and for roll cuts, corners and curves.

once you get it figured out how to put it together then you will need to take it apart and polish the arms where they make contact as well as the cams and bobbin shaft. The hole in the arm where the thread goes through should be polished. The foot needs work as well they usually are so roughly made they tear up the leather. There are several ways that people have fixed the feet but what i did was to clean up the teeth with a jewelers file so they didn't have the ragged edges now they grab fine and move the leather but don't scratch or rip it up.

here ya go i can pull the thing apart if you need but you can just see the lower bearing in the first pic it rides about halfway out of the groove. The lower bearing runs the bobbin back and forth so it should slide easily back and forth while the bearing arm runs the needle arm up and down. You should be able to slide the bobbin shaft and bearing back or forward to get the bearing into the inner smaller raceway. If it wont move something is wrong. As Wyowally said these things need to be tinkered with a bit before they run smoothly and there are tons of youtubes on that subject.
