  1. I was just thinking about this the other day. Also thought that it could be used to seal the sidearm to make a mold, to cast a replica.
  2. Thanks, I saw something about someone doing laptop and phone cases on CURRENT TV, and they looked great, not like the laser engraving on metal, which leaves me wanting. Is there any depth to the cut, or is it just on the surface?
  3. Why only a .600? Go for the .700 Nitro Express. There is always the .577 Tyrannosaur http://www.accuratereloading.com/577tyr.html if you want a higher velocity flatter shooting round. Just remember, if you go over .50, you need a federal licence to own a destructive device(?).
  4. It appears to be a finely finished edge, maybe on some sharkskin. Sanding and burnishing. How's it coming?
  5. and also usually chambered in 20lb double rifles..
  6. Bree, I think this is more the alum oxide you are looking for http://www.pts-tools.com/cgi/CGPTLMXI?PAMO...ING%20COMPOUNDS . The media Kate is referencing is for sandblasting, and resurfacing eg. removal of rust. For the compounds for stropping, some sort of tool and die tool supply would be a better bet, the production tool site I referenced above has some tools that are sold at leather supply stores at savings of sometimes 50%. http://www.pts-tools.com/cgi/CGPTSRIM?PMIT...PARTPG=CGPTHOME . The hard part is trying not to spend more time saving tool money, than using tools.....
  7. I've been thinking one of these could be set up to take setting dies... http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/disp...Itemnumber=3552
  8. We need results, keep it going, I hate fumes from spirit dyes.
  9. After reading about the post about the Chapman style holsters my thoughts shifted to the stiff lining of holsters, have there been any good how to posts on the subject? I'm familar with reasons and materials (metal, Kydex), but looking for ideas, not trying to reinvent the wheel.
  10. Frank, The Al Stholman book referenced by texas jack also has a 1911 (5") pattern in it, if you wanted the muzzle open you could trim about 3/4 inch off the bottom, and it does have the more open triggerguard you were referencing, it would be a simple matter to skirt it, and put a toe plug in it.
  11. If I read that correctly, you are asking about an extra mag pouch attached to the holster (IWB, inside the waist band?), attached by a clip? I don't want to sound preachy/tactical, but if it hits the fan and 7 or 8 rounds dont solve the problem, or there is a malfunction and an immediate action mag change needs to happen, the strong side hand will be occupied with the pistol. Reaching with the weak hand accross the body with the weak hand is unnessary fine moter skill movement. The accepted method is carrying reloads on the weak side. The 1911's, even the alloy frame models are plenty heavy , my vote is for a strong side holster (unless he spends most of his time seated, then crossdraw) with a weakside mag pouch, or mag pouch with a flashlight (always a good gift idea). When I first started carrying (15ish years ago) I had bought a name brand clip holster/mag pouch combo, no better feeling when practicing drawing from concealment and finding out that that rig was not worth betting your life on. But better finding out that way what works.
  12. It seems like a sound design. What did you mean by "A. Eliminate the holster-side tie-down strap." the strap that secures the rig to the beltline, or the retension strap on the pistol?

Great info. I tried contacting them a few months ago via e-mail, and the response made no sense.
  14. somehow or other I got on the mailing list for Van Dykes Taxidermy, and they do have some tools that are useful to the leather folks (needles, and syringes for measuring dyes and thinners) saw some useful tools in there. http://www.vandykestaxidermy.com/
  15. I've seen a metal one somewhere (maybe an article in Leather Crafter Saddlers journal) another alternative is http://www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/store/Pro...%20BLOCK%20SETS with these you can run different things off one motor, different sizes ect. there are different size pedistals out there. Happy hunting
  16. Great subject, post, info! Quick tip, When working with files, "load them" with chalk (dollar store sidewalk works as well as any), the surface won't load with metal and have to be carded/cleaned as often. If your file gets loaded with metal or other media, a flattened out brass shell casing (a rifle case is longer and thus works best) works great for really cleaning them out (work in the opposite direction of the filing direction). Anybody tried any metal engraving tools in this yet?
  17. I know exactly what you are talking about. Have you had any luck yet, progress. the big box stores have had nylon ones for $10ish that are good for patterns and brownells has their latigo for $50ish. The nylon ones are good as a pattern and perfectly serviceable. let me know, I'll lend any help (pic ect) if I can, I have several to choose from and have made a few in the past but no pattern, just straps, rings, and chicago screws.
