Hi all, This is my first time posting on the forum. Until this point I've just browsed through and read the advice everyone posted on things that I was hung up on. This is a great forum full of very talented people. This is a holster I did for Fathers Day 2013 that a friends son commissioned me to do. It's elephant and horse for a Super Redhawk .44 mag with a scope. The family was very happy today when I delivered it. Let me know what you think.

I am in the process of making a bag similar to the hermes depeche briefcase. Its definitely a daunting task and i have recently been stuck on making the handles. http://thumbnail.image.rakuten.co.jp/@0_mall/maison/cabinet/item-spec10/6000031301.jpg As you can see there is something inside the leather and i dont know what to put inside. i was thinking maybe something like in this video at 1:15 theres something that he puts into the handle and i wanted to know if that could work although i have no idea what that is, maybe rubber? Also i dont have the filetuesue or whatever its called from mando (the edge burning tool) and i know that hermes uses that to finish edges. If i follow Bob Park's tutorial on finishing edges without doing the polishing is it possible to get the same kind of matte edges that hermes has? Thanks

Hi, lovelies! After joining the April Challenge, Cheryl asked me to step in for Q this month. Welcome to the May Challenge; Figure Carving! I’m going change things up a little and actually give you a choice between a few different reference photos to study and work from – A full body nude, or Anatomy (hand, foot, arm, etc.) The whole point of the challenge is to mold and manipulate the leather to fit within the contours of whatever design/ photo you’ve picked. For example; I would take a thin (2 oz or so) piece of leather, case, cut and mold before attaching the leather to another, more thicker piece. (Photos and more detailed example to come a bit later.) Here’s the catch; you’re only allowed certain tools to work with: Swivel Knife Beveler - Be it regular or carving/smooth. Modeling Spoon/Tool Dye (If wanted) & Glue Photos: [Photo 1] [Photo 2 - You may pick one of the six photos.] [Photo 3] [Photo 4] That's it for now, let me know of your thoughts and I'll be posting my own images tomorrow, as well as answer any questions! ~Rae.

Hello all I have been doing leather work on saddles and tack for over 20 years but have been out of it for the past 4 years as I had neck surgery which put a damper on my tooling and working! But I am slowly getting back to it with 4 saddles and 5 bridles in my living room to work on! I guess I am a glutton for punishment! It is very nice to meet you all and look forward to visiting with you all! I attached a show bridle I made several years ago would love to hear that you all think of it!! Thanks Pam Brambley Yoakum Texas S & P Tack

First post here. Go easy if I'm asking something inappropriate for the forum. I want to make some notebook covers to fit (up to 3) 3.5" x 5.5" notebooks. I'd like to buy the right leather and finish at Tandy. My challenge as a rookie is knowing how to identify the proper type of leather and finish from this video: http://youtu.be/AmUbokv1HzQ To save your time, look at 3:50-4:10, 11:00-11:40 and 14:00-14:30. For those experienced with leather, those clips might allow you to identify the best leather for these projects and the type of finish to apply. Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.

I am relatively new to this forum, but had been lurking around for some time gathering information, tips, ideas, etc....Well I read an EXCELLENT tutorial that someone had posted, here it is http://paleoplanet69...ns#.UVmeVDff4nO and if definitely changed me!! I set about reading it over & over 20 to 30 times before I actually bought my first item and from there I started to get my thoughts & plans together and even after having purchased everything I need to attempt this.......I took a few days off and seriously thought about it. and why it's so important to me to make these. I mean, c'mon, it's just a pair of freekin leather slippers more or less.... My S.C.A.personea is of a Viking ( 794 A.D. ) by the name of Hrothgar Sonfiord. I also have a son 12, his name is Luki Sonfiord, and is coming along quit well with a blade. So here are a few pix of my progress as I made my first Turn Shoe....I plan to add some flourishments to these, or maybe leave them be and just make a new fancier pair. I'm just not sure, there is so much more I want to do to them. Iunno.....please leave comments & feedback, I'm a big boy and can handle criticism!!! Thank you, Robert

What are the pros and cons of these grommet-setting tools? C.S. Osborne plain washer grommet setter (the kind with the cone-shaped anvil) - each size grommet requires one of these plus a hole cutter Stimpson 405 grommet press - each size grommet requires a die set, but no cutter (if used with Stimpson self-cutting grommets I will probably use two grommet sizes: 0 and 1, and will not be setting grommets every day. This is for waxed canvas items to be sold in an Etsy shop. My husband may also use the tool for leather items.

I've been lurking for a while but now comes the time for my first post. I've been commissioned a chefs knife roll and I'm struggling choosing the correct thickness of natural vegetable tanned leather. It needs to be thick enough to withstand pointy tips of knives but also flexible enough to be rolled. I've thought about using 4/5 oz. leather on the backside and a lighter 2/3 oz. leather for the inlay which will be covering the knife handles. Has any member on here tried making knife rolls before and what should I look out for? Regards, Alex

Advertised this machine in the past but no longer able to find on the site. I have a new COWBOY 4500 SEWING MACHINE, as shown in Leathrcrafters and Saddlers Journal and offered by Toledo Sewing Machine. Has all of the listed accessories and much more that I had purchased for the machine. Large spools of thread, needles, etc; and will all be included. I am not able to pack and ship but machine may be picked up in Opelika, Al., just off I-85. Asking price is below the price machine is being sold and with free extras. $2500.00 cash takes it home. Wish I had discovered an experienced teacher in the area, to teach me how to use the machine but no luck around here. I think I put the cart before the horse when I made the purchase. Had no desire to to attempt to take a stab at making a mess of things with such a great piece of machinery so it sits on it's pedestal and waits for a more courageous individual. If you make the purchase, please plan on having assistance with you as I am not physically able to load or lift anything these days. disabled senior, senior. Hope this is a machine for someone. Ray

This is my 1st entry in this forum, hopes it works. Have done some hand carved Harley Banners (just what I call them) intended to be used free-lance and or to be attached to saddle bags or garments. The "Rt. 66," and Harley banners are 1 1/2" x 8 3/4" . The original idea was to make leather bracelets which led to a more versatile idea, let the user do as he/she pleases. They are hand carved using veggie tan leather and I consider them proto-types. .

Hello all I am new here, been reading the forum trying to solve my problem.... I recently purchased a 211G155 to sew purses and leather with. I am not new to sewing but this machine has me baffled. I too have this thread tension issue resulting in a rat's nest on the bottom of the material... I have checked and double checked my threading, there is a killer video on youtube about how to tread thru the tension disks. So I am pretty sure I have that correct. Wizcrafts wrote " A thread rat's nest under the material is usually caused by a total lack of top tension. However, the bobbin thread is usually picked up in those situations; it's just tighter on the bottom than the top my a magnitude." And this goes along with sewing machine common sense. What I cannot figure out is HOW or HOW TIGHT the tension should be.. There are no markings or adjustment indicators on the tension disks. It seems that there is quite a bit of tension on the thread, it is hard to pull so I know it is not an issue of no tension at all. The machine seemed to work perfectly when I bought it. It was set up and sewed a sample of my material just fine. All I have done is brought it home and wound new thread on a bobbin and threaded it with new #92 nylon thread and have a singer 130 needle properly installed. So I guess my question(s) would be, how tight is enough tension? How hard should it be to pull the thread thru the tension disks/spring? Do I just keep cranking the knurled nut down? Or does anyone have another opinion of what I am doing wrong? Thanks a bunch. Mia

Hi all, I am looking for someone who has the capabilities and capacity to make a custom handbag for me to give to my girlfriend. I already have the leather and hardware, but I do not have the ability or capability to make the bag. I do not already own the lining or zipper, but I am amiable to purchasing that in advance too. Ideally, the bag will look like this Valextra one though where it is brown, I would like the bag to be a deep cream and where it is white, it will be a midnight blue: As mentioned, I already have the leather, so I am looking for someone who has the technical ability to make the bag for me. Please message me your price and samples of your work. Thanks!

Hello all, I am new to the forum and leather work in general and I am trying to recreate a tool roll I have found online. The leather portion seems simple, but I figured I would tap into the wisdom here to see if I am leaving anything out. Pictures attached. It appears the edges are burnished (never done this), the logos are branded, and it is sewn into the waxed canvas lining. I am unsure if the border of the flap is burnt as well? I am looking at getting some 8oz leather from Tandy and some #10 Duck material to make it out of. Thanks!! Brian

Hi guys! I'm a noob in leatherworking and I want to find out how to harden/wrinkle leather. I've attached a photo of a journal i've bought and I was wondering how can I make leather stay in one place and stay hard like the ornament's hair/scarf on the cover of my journal (the photo I attached). Tx in advance!
