singer 153w Singer 153w Q's and motor stuff

I bought a singer 153w for doing binding on heavy canvas and vinyl projects. I am going to set it up as a designated binder machine. I have some questions that I am hoping some of the members might be able to answer for me. First off, I am confused about why the button for changing stitch length on a 111w is on the 153w because it has a dial on the side? does this serve another purpose? I am going to make a custom bracket and use the KHF2 from kwokhing, does anyone know of a higher quality binder head? This screw (below) adjusts some thing that makes circles, what is it and how do I adjust it properly? Does anyone have a motor recommendation for this machine? I realize that I am bombarding with questions, but any help would be nice. I am also wondering, does anyone with a 153w have this cloth stuff under the feed dog? -
Hello all, First post here. This seems to be a good place to get questions answered and offer info when I can. I sew heavy duty nylon bags with some leather trims. Products are still in the "R&D" phase as I try to make what I see in my head end up as a thing...ha! I sew mostly with a Sailrite Fabricator machine with the Workhorse servo. Nice setup. It's quiet and pretty smooth and handles light leather duties. What I have on hand, suddenly: (I need to lay off Craig's List) I just recently obtained a couple Singers for a steal - a 111w155 and a 111w153. These are a clean up project and I'll probably sell em. I just also obtained a Juki 1560n for a really good price in a package deal from a factory sale. I'll have many questions about this one but I wanted a double needle but most of the time I might run it single. (more on that later) It's in great shape. The package deal with the 1560n also included a Juki AMS-210c. I have NO IDEA what to do with this machine. It's 3-phase, big, heavy and it has a damn floppy drive. It's in decent shape, nothing missing aside from the shuttle hook. (common part) Anyone here familiar with pattern tackers? I might try to convert it to a single phase servo machine (if that's even possible?) and get it to do bar tacks and boxes maybe. Or I'll sell it?

I am making a change in my saddle and harness shop and have gone to all Adler machines. The machines are all in working condition. The Landis machines are in use in my shop now. Landis #3-----$1950 includes extra hooks, needles, Rare bobbin winder,original manual, some extra parts and the original cast iron legs. Landis #1-----$950 Includes some needles, one extra foot, and a copy of an operators manual. Singer 29-4-----$400 Includes some needles, left, right and double toe pressor feet and 4 bobbins. Also have an attachable table for flat work.

I'm relatively new to the world of sewing and I've begun to get my Singer 111W113 back in working order after having it in storage for the past two years. When I bought the machine back in 2014 everything was aligned and the outer presser foot operated properly. While putting everything back together I'm realizing that the outer foot has far too much clearance, especially when sewing a few layers of material. I'm currently working with a lot of Cordura and heavy canvas for making bags. 6+ layers of Cordura are thick enough to make contact with the outer foot and provide pressure. Less material just slides around freely. I've made attempts to adjust the height of this bar but it seems to be in it's lowest possible position. Is there more to adjusting the outer foot pressure / clearance than just the screw on the top rear of the machine? Thanks in advance!

Hello, all. I've spent more than a few hours in the last few months lurking and dreaming, and finally lucked into two free blind stitch hemmers on Craigslist that I turned into a trade-in for a beautiful Singer 111WSV65 with new table and clutch motor. $100 on top of the trade and I was out the door from the fantastic Ralph's PowerSew in Denver...I think I scored, to say the least. My first industrial! I have a few month's experience with a crazy left-handed cylinder bed machine with no reverse making medical leather ankle-foot orthotics a few years ago, so I know I have a steep learning curve ahead of me, but I'm going to have fun with this one. For some reason, making a beautiful tooled leather clutch purse for my daughter to treasure and use as she gets older is my first dream project, but maybe a little upholstery repair is on the horizon, too. Staying handy for my employer with some canvas medical instrument covers in the next few weeks might be one of my first projects to rebuild my skills. I doubt I'll ever step up to holster thicknesses, but want to be ready for projects a little thicker than garment leather. Like I said, I've lurked, and now searched, but would love help with specific info and resources to get me up to speed on this machine, whether in this forum or elsewhere on the net: - history (I'm guessing this is a "special variance" machine from about WWII, but what does that really mean?) - capabilities (what thicknesses and thread, etc., can this machine handle?) - manual - service manual - parts / clone-parts - accessories - tips and tricks - modifications to consider Thanks for your help!

So I got a Singer 4452 Heavy Duty machine. I can sew cloth great but I want to sew light 2oz to 4oz leather. I don't know what size or weight thread to use or where to acquire it. Anyone have any experience with this machine or a similar one and what heavy thread and type is the best to use. Any ideas on where to find a comparison of needle size to thread? I don't think using the waxed thread is a good idea, I tried and it doesn't slide through very easy, besides I think I used to thick of a thread. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Anyone knows anhthing about this machine? Is fully working and the prize that is asked is 200$ Is it only a cobbler machine or can it be used as at ordinary leather sewing machine? Best regards Johan

Hello, The machine is properly threaded and makes near perfect stitches through, both multiple layers of interfaced cotton fabric, and leather. Test swatches are about 9 inches long. After about four passes (straight stitching, then lifting presser foot and changing direction) the machine begins to malfunction. Stitches are no longer forming properly and the bobbin tension has gone haywire. After cutting the thread and removing the bobbin case, it is apparent that the thread has come unthreaded from the bobbin case. We've cleaned and oiled the machine including removing and cleaning the shuttle driver and race to remove old thread dust and gummed oil. This problem started before removing the race. Attached is the test swatch top and underside. Any thoughts on why the thread would come unthreaded from the bobbin? Thanks! Scott

I bought my first sewing machine today. Its only one machine, so I am not addicted. I am looking for another machine that will sew thicker leather, but I can take my time and find the right machine at the right price ... because I am not addicted. I might need another machine for very small spaces or especially narrow edges, but that's OK because ... I am not addicted yet! Of course I will need a machine with a walking foot, that's only number 4, not too many machines ... because I am not addicted yet! Where can I buy a machine? I need another machine ... because I am addicted to buying (and using) leather sewing machines!!!

Hi! Been lurking on this forum for a while and recently been looking into leather patchers for my amature shoemaking. I should start of with saying that I have no prior experience using sewing machines nor servicing them. I've been looking for something to sew shoe uppers with (usually about two layers of 1.5-2.5 oz calf leather leather), and if possible soles as well (8-10 oz leather, although I can keep doing these by hand if needed). Been looking into singer 29k models and it seems pretty good for what I want to do. It seems relatively easy to use as there seems to be alot of replacement parts available and alot of information to find online. The hand crank is a very good feature aswell, especially since I don't have alot of space in my apartement and don't need the threadle. One of the machines I found is this model recently, seems a bit more modern than most 29k's that I have found so far. Any idea which model and if its a good machine for a beginner? Its around 350 euros. I also found this other machine that seems to be from around the 1880's, might be called "Patent elastique" by Husqvarna or J. A. Nilson. Only 150 euros, but I can't really find alot of information about it. Thanks in advance, looking forward to be a part of this community. -Rainy -

I see that Singer recommends Type "A" or "C" oil. I found a cross reference to Lily White Industrial Sewing Machine Oil Made in USA. Will this work? Also, seems like the oil use is pretty significant. Does the oil collect in the sump and the does one just re-use it? What should I plan on for oil consumption? 2. My machine is missing the presser foot/feet. Any idea where I can find a replacement? Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

My 1917 Singer 16-41 is approaching its 100th birthday at the end of August of next year (probably made sometime during September or October), and I guess it will then officially become an “antique”. I’m running Tex90 thread in it with a size 18 needle, and it clicks right along. The outer foot clicks every time that it takes a stitch, and I like that. The sound reminds me of my Singer 29s. I had a small alterations job come in last week that it handled just fine. I had to move the leg zippers over to snug-up the fit around the thigh in a pair of old shotgun chaps. The small foot on the 16-41 let me stitch closer to the zipper slide than any of my other walking foot machines would have allowed. Everything went fine except that I was reminded right away that I hadn’t gotten around to mounting a presser foot knee-lift lever on the treadle that it’s in, so I got busy this morning and mounted one on it. I selected an old knee-lift that may be of about the same vintage as the machine, and one that I don’t see very often. Its part number is 227781 if anyone has any information on the time period that the style may have been used. I figured that this application was a good place to use the less-adjustable light-duty rigid style of lifter. CD in Oklahoma

Looking at a Singer 111w151. It's an old army parachute-repair type machine. It's needle feed. Takes 20 and 22 needles. Size 22 is good for 138 thread. Has a 1/2 HP clutch motor. Manual says 7/16 clearance under presser foot. Is this OK for veg tanned leather glue sandwich with combined thickness of 8-10 oz? Assuming the 111W is OK for dress-belt type work, what changes could be made to increase the capability of this basic machine? Add a thread lubricator? Change to pulley? In the many other posts I've read, the usual problems are under-powered machines that have the wrong feed and general problems with durability. With a 111W casting and mechanics, it's hard to imagine what it would take to deflect the needle bar or crack the casting or make the belt slip. Given enough horse power and a quality mechanism, it seems* like even a basic 111 machine could do much more than you would expect from a medium-heavy-fabric type machine. Anyone have experience modifying sewing machines like this? Increasing the presser foot height? Adding another foot to the feed mechanism?

Hey everyone, I want to buy a machine, which I can use to sew leather (have some experience with hand stitching). I have found one for sale, but the guy doesn't even know what model it is, he says it is some kind of "Singer". Can any of you recognize it and tell me what model that is, so I can research it and see whether it fits my needs, before I drive out to see it. It looks intimidating, I think it is for very thick leather.

I just bought a 31-20 and its got the original motor by singer. No way this motor is still good for sewing? I mean it seems ok but no way. I also really am worried about the end of the motor that's open and just spins wildly. My cat is going to rip her leg off if I forget to put her up! I kind of dislike when I start to stitch it takes a while for the belt to engage because it slips too. So I need a new motor right? Also seems to have the original switch or what not. I've replaced the switch on my overlock just fine but I'm not sure what I'm going to run into replacing the switch box with this crazy old wiring! I have a LOVELY Wilcox and Gibbs 5 thread overlock it looks brand new and I got it for $400 also have a sailrite portable zig zag it's okay. I don't recommend anyone getting a sailrite portable zig zag save a few hundred bucks and buy the reliable. I bought this pos (but lovely looking machine) just because it had such a long arm and I needed more room for sewing canvas! I sew light leather on my sailrite fine but now I have a beautiful machine and table! i couldn't figure out the answer to my question from the older posts so please help! Also anything I can do to close off the spinning disc? Is light leather really okay for this machine? With the older motor and slippery belt? Thanks so much

Trying to figure out if a Singer 51W is OK for making bags, belts, and stitching shoe uppers. Worst case for belts would be veg tanned 2 layers of 5-8 oz leather. Can't find much about that series but it looks like they were post-bed machines used in the shoe industry. Production was cancelled in 1938. Some were equipped with trimming so that you could cut the lining and stitch at the same time. How thick that would be.... trying to estimate how thick of leather it could handle. Please reply if you have used one of these machines. Also looking for a manual.

So I acquired a singer 16-188 recently and I figured out how to thread it and I am pretty sure that I've got the top thread done correctly, the bobbin I'm not so sure about. I think I have got it correct but when I go to sew, it just tries and tries and tries but the bobbin thread just sits there and never gets picked up by the needle. Also the (I'm new to machine sewing so forgive me for my more than likely incorrect terminology.) feeder, the little guy with teeth that pulls the material along, isn't doing its job correctly and it's almost like the material wants to feed backwards from back to front?? Also I'm sure I don't have the correct needle or thread so I'd take any advice ya got for me on getting this old machine running. oh and for the time being I am using this machine without a motor, and just turning it to hand.
