Has anyone attempted to tan their own snake skin? I've been researching through youtube mainly and found that practically all the tutorials are on rattlesnakes. I recently purchased three python skins from a taxidermist who only wanted the bones. I am attempting to tan them myself. So far I have only started with one to see if I can figure it out. Has anyone tanned both a rattlesnake and a python? The skins I got were not exactly "tube peeled" and so there is a very large band of tissue running down the spine. I tried to flesh it as best as I could. I got the fascia off for the most part but this band seems to be something else. At times I was able to get a bit lifted up and peeled off but in some areas no matter how much I scraped it would not come up. It was getting to the point where I began cutting some holes in the skin. I ended up leaving it on and I'm hoping that it works out. I put it in the tanning solution (50/50 isopropyl/glycerine), shook it twice a day for a week, and just pulled it out today to dry. In the video I watched the guy mentioned that when I pull it out I shouldn't smell anything but the isopropyl alcohol. I smelled the alcohol but there was also a hint of ... a death smell... not rotting, but dead. Have I totally messed it up? Should that smell have dissipated in the alcohol/glycerin solution? Here's the vid I watched on the solution portion:

Just a replacement belt for this gal's husband on their anniversary. Old belt belonged to his Dad, so he was going to wear it, but doesn't fit. Couple things I would like to have done a bit differently, but she wanted to keep to the original design of the belt. In the end, I thought this was a very cool gift idea. Between multiple vendor issues ordering the materials for this and taking the wench wife in for shoulder surgery, this absolutely took longer than any of us would have liked. But I think he'll like it (seriously, this is a "gimme" - the belt could SUCK and he'd still love it for the IDEA of the thing). But the belt is double layer of 5/6 oz with python skin sandwiched. Dyed in Fiebing's chocolate oil dye, hit with Fiebings dark brown antique paste, then buffed and Tan-Kote'd. Buckstitch with 3/16 black lace (to suit the python background). *click to enlarge

From the album: Odds
Couple "friend bracelets' for my daughter and her buddy. Set some snaps later today and maybe then she'll let me get some work done. Bit of left over python skin and some calf lace ... -
Just moved to Toronto from the US recently and have been looking for a source for exotic leathers, specifically alligator/croc/python. Many online retailers from the US will not ship to Canada unless you place a large order due to all the paperwork involved. Does anyone know of an exotic leather supplier already in Canada, or of a supplier overseas who will deal in small quantities? Thanks in advance.

I want to make a belt from python and/or snakeskin. How many ounces should the lining be? Should i also back the python with a thin piece of leather? I normally back it linen however have noticed that other leatherworkers projects looks as though they have padding between the two pieces, the exotic and veg-tan. Thanks.

Hi folks, I found myself with some free time and can’t really say why but I caught this bug to work with exotic leathers. We just finished a new section of our house and I’d like to do something special for the den area. I'm thinking of wrapping or trimming a flatscreen TV frame in some type of exotic leather - either ostrich, lizard, alligator or python to give you a better idea. My brother happens to own a TV store in Arizona so luckily I’ll have a few TVs to learn on which I am sure I will need! I may also at some point do some other projects with the skins, but for now the TV is just something I’d like to focus on.. Any ideas or suggestions for what sewing machine I should buy? Again, I see myself likely doing more projects in the future with exotic skins - so buying a sewing machine that costs more than it would to have it made by a pro is a nonissue. My concerns are that I’ve never seen something like this before and sewing on a TV obviously near the screen and on top of the plastic… I imagine I would use a layer of cowhide under the exotics. Hoping to get some good advice from the fine experts on this forum and anyone else who wants to chime in. Tell me what you think.. thanks ya'll Buck
