The perfect oval punch.
wizard of tragacanth replied to bsshog40's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Did you find a punch? If not, here is my recommendation. Most belts are 1 3/4" wide, so add a little and make your punch 1 13/16". Most belts will fit 1/4" slot but give it an extra 1/16", so 5/16" wide is good. So, final answer is... 1 13/16" by 5/16". BTW, I use a 4lb. hammer for this punch. You are in Texas, so I would recommend Texas Custom Dies... good people. http://www.usacuttingdie.com This is the style that I have. If you have a clicker, that's different. http://nebula.wsimg.com/2f460be3dd37ad9357d9cd60a79f3a4a?AccessKeyId=426C156FE6747CC4110C&disposition=0&alloworigin=1 -
Fully agreed. Leather work takes me to a different place.

WOW!! That is an impressive task you have done here. Thanks for sharing 🙂 Brgds Jonas

Here are photos of every page of a 1940-1950's era US Navy Leathercraft Manual. It includes patterns, locations to purchase supplies, and much more. I tried to take the best photos I could, if you want a close up of something let me know and I will try to accommodate.

Singer 29k1 presser foot doesn't work
Constabulary replied to MelissaViarengo's topic in Leather Sewing Machines

Definitely handier, if you have one. Alternative methods are good to know.
-
@GerryR a good way, but when trying to find the centre point to put a snap on a leather flap say a ruler is handier
-
btw, the magnet is glued on the inside of the leather 'key fob' pieces
-
The logo for this ruler is a square with a centre point arrow and the brand name of the ruler is Center Point which is sold by US Tape Company. I figure it was placed at the 5.5" mark just to confuse the hell out of people as it has nothing to do with measurements. kgg Nah, it's a short foot sorta like a short ton (2000lbs). kgg
-
He got his ruler at a discount, only 11" long!
-
I am lost. Isn't the center point of 12 inches, 6 inches? So why is it 5.5 inches here? I use thread. Cut to exact length of object, fold in half, hold from one end and... Voila!

Clicker dies, no clicker press?

I do believe that you have given me the courage to attempt such shenanigans. And thanks for the bookmark suggestion, definitely works for my primary market here in town! -
As far as your steel rule and hoop go, if I’m translating Aussie to American correctly, that rule is what I would call flat bar stock, and hoop would be steel strap at our “big box hardware stores” (aka Home Depot). If so, the hoop would probably be way too soft to hold form under a press. If you happen to have a forge, I suppose it *may* be possible to heat it and use some Cherry Red to case harden it once you shape it. (As a gun guy, I assume you might be familiar with it, but it’s basically gun bluing but for the brownish color instead of blue-black). If you don’t have one, you might be able to slip one under the missus’s nose if you build it yourself (I built my coal forge for about $50, well less than the cost of my anvil, and my 1st propane forge is made from an old propane cylinder and the guts of an old gas grill. But you didn’t hear that from me… 😉). And metalwork and leather have always gone together hand in hand. Wow I went way off topic really fast. I’m assuming that you have checked with metal supply houses (the commercial variety that supply pipes/rebar/i-beams/etc), welding supply shops, blacksmiths, co-op forges, farriers, farm/tack supply shops, and web forums. (Just the sources I can think of to at least get a lead to work from.) But I have been told that common things here are not-so-common there. Oh! BBQ/smoker fabricators! Might even be able to get some of there scrap (though there’s no such thing as scrap steel. Just ask a blacksmith 😁. No I’m not a blacksmith, just a bumblesmith…) Ooh squirrel! My daughter got me a little Vevor 1-burner forge, and it’s actually my primary forge now. I think she found it while it was on sale for ~$100. 10/10 recommend. Might even get hotter than my 2-burner. Thank you, I have a difficult time finding what I’m looking for through the 100’s/1000’s of search results!

Hi everyone! Recently I bought online this Singer 29k1 sewing machine but there is a problem. As I start sewing the presser foot won't pull back the fabric underneath it, basically it turns out that the machine sews in the same point. Can somebody help me out? I will post a link with the photos. Also I noticed that the bar with the stitch length doesn't have numbers and signs on it regulating the length.

That might be because "Joe Kidd" was set in the early 1900's. JM2C, Jim

Yup - I'm not mindin' this at all Maybe only thing ... I'd punch a small slot on the one with the buckle where the tongue goes ... leavin that dimple in the leather. That little 'bump' is distracting from the look of your otherwise nice lookin holster GOOD news is, it aint too late -- unbuckle, punch, done ...

DIVORCE FINALIZED Now, NOBODY likes the idea of divorce, really, but then I did lose about 170 lbs Ya could say over the years she outgrew me 🤣 So some the boys around asked if I was "datin" somebody. Thinkin bout that, I realized that's unlikely. I mean, they gotta be some 'rulez' about who ta date, yeah?... So- what would these 'rulez' be? So far, I've concluded that these are all a must (all, not some). gotta be a girl. I mean ORIGINAL equipment, not this "aftermarket" stuff ya hear about these days. She gotta fit my cutoff jeans. And by cutoff jeans, I mean my jeans are full length, but if she dont' fit in 'em she CUT OFF. I was created liking girls and sammiches. And if I was "hungry" (and I nearly always am), I'd want a good sammich. Not just any sammich will do. Gotta be the type o meat I like; not too interested in frills and add-ons. But - and here's the prollem these days - when I want a sammich, I want my OWN sammich. Dont' be tryina sell me a sammich somebody already took a bite out of ....

As a rule, I like 6 spi. Prolly just preference, though the rule is - thicker leather, heavier thread and wider spacing. Awls are generally tapered, so with heavy leather, pushing through all that may result in holes bigger than a guy wanted ... Adjust that 'rule' with the function of the equipment (have to have a reasonable breaking strength) and the cosmetics (I like the hole FILLED IN with the thread completely and TIGHT). Again, thinner leather, smaller thread and tighter spacing. It's a 'rule'. Understandably, there may be times a guy wants to alter that for whatever reason ... keepin in mind nobody wants to step into a saddle using fenders sewn with 138 thread... and a holster for a snubby will look ridiculous with 346 weight (though it will certainly hold). And, then - just when you thought it was safe to go back in the questions... there's that lady from VA who wants it strong but still "pretty".... so you adjust as needed ... Some folk want thre thread to shock ... And others want the thread to 'disappear"....

Hey Roger . . . look on Ebay . . . most of the time you can pick up a CD with the program Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 . . . for 4 or 5 bucks US . . . or even a later dated one. There are some serious picture "help out" tools on there. My phone for example . . . usually takes pictures at anywhere from 5 to 12 megabytes . . . and those won't send for the most part. Sometimes they are dark . . . especially a Glock gun in a black holster. And the camera puts them out in a huge size . . . maybe 3000 by 4000 or so. There is a little ditty in there that allows me to correct all this . . . I can enhance the photo with a little "fill flash" . . . I can make the picture a lot smaller . . . Plus I can cut down on the picture from 12 megs to maybe 600 kb . . . which I can send to anyone. The enclosed example I did in about 10 minutes . . . and it would have been only 2 minutes . . . except I had to hand cut the shadows out of it. And putting pics on the internet . . . or saving to your computer . . . it is a snap. May God bless, Dwight

Most of those shows and movies use 1892 and 1894 Winchester’s, which were developed in those years. Sometimes they take the forearms off and pretend they are Henrys. The movie Joe Kidd has bolt actions with scopes, a Broomhandle Mauser, and an 1895 Winchester.

Well, now you're just showing off... I think that's called a "Hoyer Lift" and it's used for lifting medical patients. Not a bad idea. Some insurance company probably paid big money for that thing.

For shorter lines, you can use a compass and swing an arc on both sides of the line from both ends with the compass set at a distance greater than half the line length. Connect the intersections of the two arcs on each side of your line, and you have a line perpendicular to the original line directly thru its center. Helps if you don't have a ruler. For longer lines, make a compass from a piece of string and a pencil or marker.

That lump of beef was......ok , hardly restaurant quality. Quite tough in fact. I'll do a slow cook curry on monday with the leftovers . I will never buy a "discount " lump of beef ever again 😒 thing is, I have one more lump to use up in the freezer . Lesson learnt. HS
