Double Layer Holster Ques
Jimbob replied to Boriqua's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
have BOTH pieces damp, not wet....then glue them together just laying flat...press well...then pick up and form the spine so you have no wrinkles!!! Works any time!!! -
Done some big carvings on 5-6oz W&C leather.....gonna be car seat panels....skirts will be 2-3 oz milled tooling leather. I have all the leather conditioned with Aussie cream, now I am thinking of putting on a watter repellent finish on......can I put a finish on top of this Fiebings Aussie saddle conditioner.....and what finish would be flexible enough to not wrinkel. peel or do something terrbile funny on car seats, its a show car but seats are still seats....flexing, rubbing and such included. Thanks up front for lots of ideas and input!!! James

OK, my BK swifel knife and 2 blades, small and large in thin came in after several e-mails and calls....seemed to be sharp ready to go.....stroped them on leather a bit and went to work on Wicked and Craig leather...5-6 oz....now I am surly dissapointed....boy, them things drag....I cant hardly make a narrow curved cut....me not being an expert on carving, but done my share over the years.....wonder what I am doing wrong....I expected wonders from this new knife....sharpeded on 400 grid, polished than stroped again....for a few seconds it seems to be razor sharp then it suddenly and unusuall drag's and having real hard time to do round curves....well, now what to do,,,!?? Anybody has any ideas or suggestions...? Thaks for all input James

Killer scooters.....more pictures...please....!! Love these old rigs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well done seat, nothing better than a flat head.....got to love em.... James -
Hmmmm, just read your lines now....where would these be located....I am interrested!! James

You will not be able to make a serious holster on a flat bed machine and shurly not on a Singer 111, what you need is a more serious cylinder machine...unfortunatly it will cost you min. 1000 bucks and up used....new ones run 1500 to 5000....so here is NO cheap in this matter...but sometimes you can find one on Craigs list, epost and classifieds for less....I have an Adler 105 and it suits me well....they are not cheap any more either....you will be in a heap of trouble buying some weak or unusable machine....better save more bucks and say lesser bad words later....just my 2 cents. James

Nice, clean and simple.....now you need to work on your edges to burnish, as mentioned your stitching line and then you need to add flames, every cardholder should have flames and skulls on it....hahahaa... You done well, show us more and soon you be right there with this talented bunch hanging out here. Thanks for showing!! Jimbob

sounding good, will try that....the guy now dropped the lacing and wants welts, piping, so this makes it a bit lesser labor intensive....has to be done middle of June....heeeeellp!!!! Art work will be like inserted panels, back seats, front seats....all together 8 panels....a car upholstery guy is helping with lay-out...... well, wish me luck, pictures will show up as soon as we are done.....

Tom I think you onto something....hmmm...let me try this.....this is gonna be hot, haha.. Thanks....

Trying to upgrade my skills, tools and horizon in carving.....mostly picture carving....( no, no horses...haha....skulls, flames and demons...) But still want to learn serious skills. What beveler would I need, have cheap craft tool stuff and done me fairly well over the years....what makes the difference between a 40 dollar beveler and a 5 dollar one....can I polish them to make em better, what do I need to look for when I get some good ones...what kind would I need...hhmmm....lots of questions, I am open for all info and answers. Thanks for any help.. Ohhh and I admire these beautiful Sheridan carvings so much....If I just could do one of them with flames....hahhaa... James

Thanks Mike I want to get much deeper into carving, love the look of old school Sheridan carving and related, but myself do flames and skulls for the folks that pay me..... I need to get better at this carving and need better tools!! So I will order BK knife and extra blade....I have an super thick no name all brass barrel knife from ST leather ( cheap ) feel real good but blade is no quality, guess for the more delicate work a smaller barrel makes sense....need to take a carving class real bad...Trying to do Ashville, NC weekend for some years...always out of time or money...szzzz....I am self taught and make so many mistakes I am sure.....just dont know it yet. The Rock'a Billy car szene has discovered my work here recently and I am doing hole car seats with carving and all covered with saddle/tooling leather...a first for me!! So lets brake that piggy bank and order some knifes.... thaks for all the input, hope some more people join in. Greetings James

Getting ready to order a Barry King swivel knife, wonder what blade I need for picture carving ( car seat's, bike seats and general paper page size carving...)..) I have been using Tandy/craft tool stuff and never liked it. What is the difference between thick blade and thin....more detail oriented or better to bevel...? Also how wide should I order my blade, isit ok 3/8 " for general work...? Thanks for any input... James

First Holster - Critique Please
Jimbob replied to RLBLeather's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
OK< here it is: Hammer strap is to long and to low, your carving/stamping is a bit shallow, the edge paint could use abit less smudge, be more precise when aplying edge paint, your holster could use a liner or use a sealer to get rid of the fussy look! And the top end stitching needs to come arround an inch or so back in the dirrection of the end of the barrel, makes it much stronger and looks good. Ohhh, and did I mention you did real well for a first holster.....you will make more soon and they will get better and better....so here it is. Greetings James -
Nice work my friend, nice color....the hammer strap is to much in my book, your edges need to be sanded and burnished, way to much trigger shown, could have more wet molding and shaping, your belt slots need to be cleaner and also burnished!! Ohh and did I say that my second holster did not look half as good as yours,,,,!! Keep it coming, never get dissapionted of your skill level, you will be making killer holster in NO times!! Good work and well done for second holster!! greetings Jimbob
