I am having a really tough time getting rid of the tool marks when I'm using a backgrounder or bevelling tool. In my mind I'm "walking" the tools, but I really may not be at all. Would someone please explain how to "walk" the tools and not leave the obvious marks. I've read multiple books on "how-to" do it, but I just don't seem to have the hang of it yet.

Welding Glass Cases
wvcraftsman replied to rdb's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Thanks a bunch. I thought you might be talking about "dunking" it in something like neatsfoot. -
Another option is using the clear film from back in the day of overhead projectors. I'm sure there is a ton of this stuff laying around offices that have obsoleted the overheads.

Welding Glass Cases

Great Job. They look very nice. What is dunked? What type of snowproof finish? -
That's a great idea Ray. I have a couple pieces that are too big to throw away, but not big enough to cover any floor.

Very Nice!! I would say you could make them and sell them too. A very creative and inventive product. Good Job.

I'm not sure about the Adler, but this happens on a Pfaff machine as well. It's an easy and simple fix. If you can hold the hook in place while turning the hand wheel, you should feel it "fall" back in to place.

Brick And Mortar Required
wvcraftsman replied to Studio Apocalypse's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Does anyone know if there is a list posted on here of the wholesale suppliers that do not require a brick and morter store? I know some of the advertisers above do not require it, but I thought there might be others that don't advertise here. -
Thanks for the tips. I'll try tilting the stamp. I keep the leather pretty wet, but I may not be waiting long enough before I start stamping. Every now and then I'll get a good one, but not consistant at all. Just enough to keep me coming back for more . I guess the key is to practice, practice, practice. Thanks for the help everyone. I love this forum!

I've been practicing using the 2D and 3D stamps. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but the stamps are moving on me when I strike them with the mallet. I'm using the heavy handle and piece of marble.

Looks like someone should start writing tutorials, for people like me (hint hint), and post them on here!! Both of you do fabulous work!! I can't wait to see more.

Ditto to ClayB. We've been using it for about 3 years now. It is better than dial-up, but it does have it's disadvantages too. Like Clay said....very pricey. $50/month for the 512K package (we didnt' even mention buying the equipment). If you have bad weather.....no service. I was just now able to get on today because of the SNOW!!

Does Hale and Co. have a website? Or a store name in Ebay? This has been a very interesting topic.

Hi rawhide. It's probably a little too late now, but it sounds like it may be the thermostat that's bad. If you replaced the elements and it's still doing it, that's where I would check next. Hope you get it fixed.

Welcome to the forum buddytink. I'm new to leatherworking as well, but IMO it is well worth the time to get a beginners kit from Tandy. It helps you get the feel for the basic tools and gives you lots to practice on. There are several places that carry books on making tack. I'm sure one of the experienced saddle and tack makers will chime in for book recommendations. Good Luck. Leatherworking is an addiction.

Great job Storm. I cannot seem to open up the pattern. I can open the finished pic, but not the pattern. Help.

Hide Inlay Belt
wvcraftsman replied to bruce johnson's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
WOW. Nice belt. How did you inlay the hair-on hide? This is turning into quite the expensieve hobby with all the new different tools I HAVE to buy. -
A very unique piece. You did a fantastic job carving the scene.

Thanks terrahyd. I'm still an infant leatherworker, so I'm learning what to use/what not to use. I love to see what everyone has made.

I got that one from Harbor Freight for Christmas. It will hold a ton of tools. The first two drawers have dividers in them....perfect for the camos, bevelers. It's heavy when its full of tools.

Great Job! I only hope that my projects look as good as the many I've seen on here. Keep up the great work. What is plastic wood finish? Where do you buy it?
-
Bob, As usual, I could look at your masterpieces all day!! That is incredible! I would like to know more about how you made it...What is the base made out of to hold the lamp upright? Was that a tap pattern you created?

Does Siegel of California have a print catalog?

That's a nice binder. Is that a kit or did you make it up yourself? Where did you get the 3-ring metal part?

Kate is absolutely correct! You need a solid surface, TRUST ME. I found this table.... http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?itemnumber=93454-AAA&Submit=Go appears to be a solid table. Here is a tool chest that is really handy. I keep most of my tools in here. I like the felt lined drawers. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=94538 I got both of mine for less than $200.
