Bout all that's left I could find of Wickett / Craig chestnut skirting (guess i gotta call and spend more money). Anyway, the fit is purdy good. Gotta do some cosmetic 'purdyin' up" in the file itself, and pattern should be up on cutesy couple days (ish). Go on admit it.. ya like the way that stitch line sits up on the rig ...

I don't think there IS such a thing as a "fix" here. I've bought drum-dyed (at the tannery) leather that was dry for a month, and when you form it, ya git a little bleed out. And I aint sure what "apply a sheen ta yer finish" means, but yeah.. what alex said.
-
Yeah, that's a footage mark. 10 point zero... or 10 sq ft (the underline is "tenths").
-
since you bought them, we assume you would ,know if the numbers were prices. If they aren't prices, then probably square foot area. 9, 10, and 11 could well be the size of small double shoulders, or possibly single bends.

How many you boys 'n' gals orderin out that way? Just talked to a friendly fella gonna send me a few bits. I didn't order any, but I see they gotsum HO "B" for $215/side, which aint too extreme. If a fella was in OR, have no reason not to go check 'em out, right?
-
How large are the skins? Those numbers may be square feet.... 10.0 .... 11.0 .. 9.0.....

Nope.. I was able to salvage the PROJECT, but not the dye. Would have been nicer (and a better partner for the caiman) with the walnut dye. Next week the walnut dye will get here and i'll be out of the caiman That color is med. brown with some chocolate splashed in to town down the red tint a bit.
-
Yeah, it turned out 'okay-ish'. But it would have been better ... more 2-tone to match the caiman hide .... if that walnut dye wasn't all over the floor and my gym shoes

Maybe i shuda posted in sewing machine section?

I've not been drinkin'
JLSleather replied to JLSleather's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Thanks! I hand sew when needed - and that's it. Stuff that won't fit in the machine, or stuff quite small that makes me not want to adjust tensions back n forth just to stitch 10" Tracks? Idunno... the leather is completely dry when I run it through, and the foot pressure is backed of to no more than needed. Not sure if that was your question? -
I said booGerbelt, with a "g". But yours could be amusing too

American Leather Direct or other sources for American leather
JLSleather replied to CraftyNick's topic in All About Leather
Prolly is, if a guy was thinkin about something other than the topic. I guess other people just use girls to carry bulky items. 'Course, that makes good sense, actually. Put 'em ta work, that's what I say. -
My last word here, and a chance to laugh again If the difference between "A" and "D" is $30, then it's beyond me why anyone would want to get the one you throw out half of That said, about videos in general ... I remember that one me 'n' my buddy Robert (mecopocketholsters.com) used to laugh about. Some genius makes belts (which by itself is not bad) and makes videos that go on (and on) about belts. I mean.. it's a piece of leather, glued to another piece of leather, and stitched. Somebody sent me a link to this sensitive-lookin' feller, and in the video the guy is holding up a belt and babbling on. Along the line, he wipes his nose with his bare hand, then goes back to "displaying" his belt with all the wonderful talent involved At that moment, even if he hadn't already been irritating, he guaranteed that I would never buy, recommend or endorse anything he does. Cut his own throat, as it were. Shot hisself in da foot, rightcheer. Still, "boogerbelts.com" is STILL funny

American Leather Direct or other sources for American leather
JLSleather replied to CraftyNick's topic in All About Leather
I STILL haven't been in there. Make myself NOT go about once or twice a month. Matt 'n' friends say come on out.. you can pick the hides you want, get it holstered, split, and/or packaged and leave with it under yer arm. Scared to go. It's not the cost of the leather, or even the plane ticket (I am NOT driving that far),... it's the 3 young fellas I'd need to help me carry everything I liked! -
Oh, about the 'blow-back' function here... I'm sure nobody on THIS forum needs to be reminded, but just in case someone NEW reads this section...: When blowing the brush to clear it, do NOT leave the cup on the brush, or look down in there to see what comes out Place a finger over the tip (if you have a needle protruding from the end of the brush, withdraw the needle into the brush (usually with a trigger). Then put a finger over the front opening, and hit the air (full power) for a second to allow the brush to 'puke'. If the cup is attached.. well.. think "old faithful". Doesn't mattter how I know this

Backing and lining of python for belt
JLSleather replied to ColettePurity's topic in Exotics, Reptiles, Furs and others
Yep, what he said. I don't like snake for belts at all. Big in the 80's -- I done a few. Lacing the edges is a big plus. But all that back and forth pulling through loops doesn't do the snake skin any good at all. Scales weren't made to be "stroked the wrong way", which is why so many snake belts you see are either embossed (not actual snake) or they are coated heavily with acrylics ... My 2¢ .. better to use the snake as a recessed inlay.- 5 replies

I have Paasche brushes. They're decent quality, not incredibly expensive, and parts available everywhere for cheap (ish). In the double action brushes, the needles are always the thing to go.. so I keep a few on hand. Like $5-6 ... You do have to clean it out. The more air you're using, the quicker the drying (like, puttig the project in front of a fan, basically). But I find it sprays just fine with a #5 tip / cap / needle and about 50/50 mix at about 35-40 psi. If it starts to clog - which it can - you'll notice in the spray. Stop, disconnect the bottle (or cup, whichever) and "blow-back" into a trash can, or rag, etc. With a siphon feed brush, simple -- but I could see it being a bit more difficult with a gravity brush. This stop / restart won't harm your project or finish at all. I keep two bottles right there on teh table.. look like ketchup bottles with the squeeze tip. One with 50/50 mix, one with distilled water -- for flushing. So far, I haven't needed to take apart the brush for 'severe" cleaning.. in say.. a couple thousand projects I have one of the HF brushes... but never used it. Different connector, and I never got round to getting the replacement hose! Paasche is like Sony that way... great products, but parts only interchange with other Sony stuff! So, next time I see a 'sale', think I'll pick up a Paasche "H" model. Single action, interchangeable size tips, simple. If it gets a bit clogged, use the reamer that ships with it.. and seconds later off ya go.

Using Acrylic Resoline and cracking!
JLSleather replied to PrimroseHandmade's topic in How Do I Do That?
Most things will crack if applied in heavy coats -- including caulking, house paint, floor wax.. blahblah Pastor Dwight will no doubt tell you that a cord of three strands is very strong (and three light coats is better than one heavy coat.) -
When I use resolene - which is not all the time -- I spray it. Cut it 50/50 as in "eyeball" about there. I have double-action airbrushes, so I have one set off to the side which does NOTHING BUT resolene, but for those who don't already own brushes, I'd recommend a solid single-action brush with a relatively large tip for finishes - something in the 1" - 1 1/2" spray pattern range. I can do 6 or 8 or 10 projects in under an hour, come back later in the day and second coat, and in the morning they're ready ... no runs, no drips,.. FWIW about finishes, I use Tan-Kote, but it's not water-resistant (like at all), and I use Saddle-Lac, but it's pretty high-gloss and not good for flexing much, so the holsters generally get the resolene. And good work... good to see the fellas divin' in. And LEARNIN' sumthin is the end result (woohoo). Now... if you don't mind... how did you stick the kydex in there? Did you stitch it with the leather, or is it between the stitch lines?

I admit it --- when I saw PA in your profile thing there, I wondered why you "order' leather at all. I'd just earmark a few hours one saturday a month to go GET some. I order maybe a little larger amounts than some folks round here, but that's because I don't live an hour from the tannery! With that hour drive, I'd pick up a few at a time and have more room!
