Tools Needed To Get Started - Beginner
camano ridge replied to ryanissamson's topic in Getting Started
It's a great idea, the problem with what you ask for is that there are so many variable and so many personal preferences. Who will develop the list? If you just ask for recomendations for the list your list will be miles long. What project do you want the list for. If you are going to do a holster the list will be some what different then if you are doing a wallet with 2-3oz leather. Are you doing tooling, what style? The Sheridan will require different tools such as thumb prints vs pear shaders. For basic tooling the list of seven basic tools already exists. Specifying the size again would be a chalenge and would have to be based on the project type, the leather thickness and the end result the individual wants. An example is edge beveler there are many sizes, however you choose the size based on the project, thickness of leather and outcome you want. Some people want a very domed or rounded edge where as some projects look better with ust the poutside edges of the edge being beveled and the overall edge being somewhat mor square. Putting together a beginer list would be a undertaking and will lead to pages of discussion. Who will ultimately decide what goes on that list? Here is my list, again there will be people who agree with some of it and will disagree with some of it,, other people will havesuggestions of there own. Sizes will not be listed because that will be determined byt the project and leahter size. Something to cut leather with: Options are cheap to high end Head or Round Knives/head knives, exaco knife set, utlity or carpet knife etc. Prices a few dollars to several hundred. A maul or mallet 7 basic tools for tooling basic floral designs: Swivel knife (cheap to very expensive) Veiner, Beveler, pear shader, seeder, backgrounder, camoflage. I would also add a modeling spoon. All are available in various sizes depending on design need. For Sheridan the list would change some. Sewing set up, Overstitch wheel or pricking Iron (size will depend on how many stitches per inch you want) Diamond awl, adjustable stitch groover, needles thread (color size and type will depend on project, bees wax, pliers. Edge bevelers Something to burnish edges with: can range from a hardwood dowel to a custom made exotic wood burnisher to a machine specificaly made for burnishing. The list can go on and on and in addition you should get books. To put together a list and explanation of everythiong you are asking for you would need a book say something like Leatherwork manual by Stholman, Leather craft tools by Stohlman (gives picture description and use of tools), Leather Craft Handbook by Laierd, Hand Sewing, Figure carving by stohlman. and many more. A 1/2 an hour from now I will think of other things that could be added and so will others. To give you what you want would be a big undertaking and has already been done in books. As to supliers all of the tools listed can be had from Tandy, Springfield leather, Zack White, McPherson Leather and many others also most of the tools can be bought from custom makers as well. Don't know if any of this helps I am sure you will get other responses. Also if you use the search windo in the upper right hand corner you will see this has been discussed many times and there is not yet a hard and fast list. -

How I Made Conchos /pictures/
camano ridge replied to pitman's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Yes, but since he's in Poland I doubt they will go after him for a nickle. Look at all the machines in this country that stratch and smooth out a penny andactualy stamp something else on it. The main point is that the principals can be used for any metal disc to turn it into a concho. If you don't know how to silver solder, use JB weld to attach a female end of a chicago screw to the disc. -
The edges look like they have been burnished a bit and there is a bit of a shine. My guess is there ia a finish of some sort on them. I would try deglazing.
-
Is it possible that she bought finished spur straps. If so they are going to be dificult to do. Get some deglazer and remove any finish. Then try casing and tooling them. Can you post a picture of them?

You say you can't find what you want, do you have a picture or drawing of what you want. THese are the types of slide on ID tags I am familiar with. http://www.boomerangtags.com/page.php?c=collartags&k=h&gclid=CMKN86OjwLwCFc1qfgodpB8Akg http://www.amazon.com/Slide-On-Pet-Collar-Noise-Colors/dp/B00E5FMH1Q

Ruger Sr1911 Avenger
camano ridge replied to George B's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Nice looking rig George. -
Looks ggod. Looks like you have belt slots alsdo so it can be worn OWB?
-
Do you mean eylets/grommets to allow holes to run the lace through?
-
I woould make a simple sheath cut the front and back the same cut a welt attach a belt clip to one side do tooling if any dye glue stitch and finish edges you have a boot knife. Here is a rough drawing should print out pretty close to actual size and give you something to work from. Because the knife sits fairly deep it should be secure yet present enough of the tang to draw the knife easily. The red dotted line is an alternate height for the sheath.

Lc&sj Back Issues And Articles Question
camano ridge replied to smudley's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
LC&SJ unfortunately does not put out an electronic version. I have the hard copy version, the only article I found 2 articles none by George Hurst. Molded leather bowl and display stand by Tony Laier Nov - Dec 2003 pg 62 Bowl, water, spinner, flax by Frank Zigon Sept-Oct 97 -
That first knife you posted, I think you will find it very dificult to do the type of cutting you need to do on leather. As to a traditional ulu I have two of them and have tried one for cutting leather. It will cut it, however I found it cumbersome for some of the cutting. It was hard to hold for cutting curves. I prefer the handle od a rgulat round or head knife.

Just Getting Started
camano ridge replied to dpip4x4's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Not to hijack this thread, Steel horses when you say you can't find holster molds are you looking for particular models or are you trying to find cheaper used molds. Rob is a member on these forums and has bluegunstore.com has some of the best prices and includes shipping in the price. Duncans Outdoors sell cast aluminum molds, knifekits.com sells a few models. Bunkhouse tool company sells single action and western gun molds as well as a few modern gun molds. Multi holsters sells molds with sight track (prices are a little high but some of the prep work has been done http://www.multiholsters.com/Molds.htm If you look under for sale misc. Look for a post by Jared he makes holster molds and has a limited selection but is building the selection as he gets a hold of different guns. i don't know what style you are looking for Tandy sells a pouch style kit. If you do a search on the se forums some one posted a pattern a while back. Also the current issue of Leathercrafters and Saddlers Journal has a nice pattern in it with instructions. Also I just ran across a pattern on pinterest this morning I will see if I can locate it again and post the link. Here is a link to a you tube video. He does not have a pattern but walks you through how he made it. It looks like a nice case and easy to build.

Go to the main forum page use the top right hand box to do a search for armour. You will find examples of armour as well as tuttorials and patterns. If you search the patterns forum there is a mmidevil and fantasy pattern pack. Just yesterday some one posted pattern and how to for upper body armour. I would have to search for the link. SPingfield leather has or did have a book on making armour. Search youtube there are several you tube vids on making armour.

What Was Your First Leather Project?
camano ridge replied to gaseousclay's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
40 years ago I got out of the Marine Corps and got a job as a body guard did not have much money and needed a concealable holster so I made a Roy Baker Pancake Holster. It looked like a leather pancake with a bite out of it where the gun went in. -
Cowboy Rig For Modern Revolvers
camano ridge replied to glockanator's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Glockanator, when you say cowboy rig are you thinking Buscadero/drop loop or law Dogs type or just a western flavor. If you are just looking for a western flavor the Tom Three persons style works well for modern revolvers. You can carve it any way you like to give it as much western appeal as you want. Look on Lobos web site for some good examples of a three persons holster. The 12th picture down looks like it woould be a good one for a Model 29. http://lobogunleather.com/6_classic_tom_threepersons_style . You can use any of Gohrmleys patterns and adjust the pattern to the gun. Or you are experienced enough you know how to draw your own pattern for modern style holster, just trace the outline of your gun like you would for any other holster then picture what you would like your western holster to look like and start drawing lines arounf your rvolver and refine until you have what you want. http://lobogunleather.com/6_classic_tom_threepersons_style -
Any Help On How Do I Make This In Leather?
camano ridge replied to PsychoSmart's topic in How Do I Do That?
Get any of the three Stohlmans Art of Making Leather Cases. There may not be an exact pattern however the important information on how to make a case is in any of those books. Including the information needed to draw your own pattern. There are patterns in those book close enough to adapt to what you want. All three are availabe as Digital download from the Tandy Leather Craft library. -
I was thinking the same thing the other day. I was going to ask the same question you beat me to it.
