Andrew, I have a 5 in 1 for sale. I have run 2oz. veg tanned calfskin through it with no difficulty. As in any other piece of machinery there is a learning curve, this one can be "learned" in less than half a day. BTW: My 5 in 1 is priced to sell and I will negotiate the shipping. You would have a machine that will do many things in lieu of only one. ferg

You would need to dampen the leather a little and use a modeling tool with a fairly large end. That would get most of the line. ferg

IMHO, the 277 thread is way to large for journals. 138 is about as large as I have seen and still look hand done on the lighter weight leathers. Bob Park uses a lot of #69 thread on his journals etc. ferg

This 5 in 1 has been dismantled, cleaned, lubricated, old finish removed and repainted. New Skiving blade, new Welting Unit, new round cutting wheel and guard, new springs where needed along with new bolts. This unit had been dropped some time in it's life. One base corner is broken, I decided to not attempt a repair on that since it doesn't deter the operation of the unit. The mounting for the welting head was broken also. I welded some new steel together for a bracket for the mounting of the welt roller, works perfectly. This machine works as well as it did when brand new Asking $600, I will negotiate the shipping. Unit weighs 43 pounds without a shipping carton. I have a 5 in 1 that I have completely overhauled. New skiving blade, new cutting wheel and guide, new welting unit. I removed all old paint repainted, broke the machine down, cleaned shafts and all moving parts, and greased. Works like a brand new machine. I have seen these for sale for over $1000, I am not asking near that. PM me if interested. I can send you some photos also. ferg

I grew up on a farm, my oldest brother farmed all his life as did most of my family elders. Before I left for the service in 1952 we had draft horses, Percheron. Two jet black, two mares that were sorrel, and a Dappled grey stud, his name was Nick Settlemyer. Animals of all sizes and shapes have always been part of my life. I love them all but there is simply no more beautiful animal than a horse. Wife, daughter and I seen the movie "War Horse" this evening. The movie simply reinforced the love I have for them. My experience other than using for the "pigs", is sometimes in upholstering the seats on an auto. They could be used for a multitude of "holding" needs. ferg

I have the #195-2502 Interior, Ladies,Clutch from Chaylor-Fenneli. These have a thin layer of foam on the "glue" side with exception of the "fold" area which is a nylon type material. That area would not get glued, I know that much. Have been told to just glue the perimeter and not the area of foam. This doesn't sound correct to me but I would like anyone that has used these liners to give their experience and how did you do it. BTW: I am going to use Upholstery Leather on this one, it is very soft. ferg

As I said before, use a smooth feed dog. You may have to adjust the pressure on your smooth feet to make the leather feed properly. This works for me and you have no other "thingy's" to mess with. ferg

Michael, I have no cell number for you but I have a suggestion so you can get your stitcher up and running before next week. I use a product called Motor-Kote for everything. My sewing machine had a "Rubbing" sounding and a little hangup. I put this product on it and haven't had the problem since. It comes in a spray can as well as liquid containers. I am enclosing a URL for the company's home page with places that may be close enough to you so you can get it right away. http://www.motorkote.com/RetailStores.html If you have any idea where the "Hang" is on your machine you can spray or drip a little of the liquid on the spot, run through a couple cycles of the stitcher and I will be willing to bet money that short of a manufactured flaw, this will cure the problem. ferg

You are not casing your leather coorrectly. Tandy leather has nothing to do with the problems you are having. Access the archives on this forum for casing lleather. Ferg te name='Suicide' timestamp='1324934036' post='226189'] I took another leather scrap that I got from one of Holland's shop. It is much thinner than that Tandy's (I would say Tandy is about 8-9 oz to me, that one is about 4 oz). Well, I have made some investigations, please look at the picture attached. I damped piece very much (not soaked though) and made the impressions 1 right after damping (0 minutes from "zero" ) just by pressing tool by hand. After 15 minutes leather looked pretty "wet" and I made impressions 2. Serie of imprints are done by pressing tool by hand and separate imprint number 2 is done with poly mallet strike. I spent 15 minutes more by watching TV and then (30 minutes since "Zero") I made imprints n.3 in the same way - serie just pressing, separate by mallet. Leather was ALMOST ready for tooling but a bit darker yet. 20 minutes more (50 mnutes from "Zero") - leather went into "just as it has to be for tooliing" - almost original color and cool. I made imprints numbered as 4 in the same way as above. Finally I took a hairdryer and dry this piece in 10 minutes. So, what would be your sentense? To me it sounds like Tandy's leather from the belt kit is sucks - it is hard to compress by tool while tooling and it is losing depressed shapes as it is going to be dry (perhaps of grain layer is going to shrink while drying). I HOPE I\m wrong about that belt kit blank, so please give me your suggestions. Thanks in advance!

If the reverse side isn't a problem with marks you need to use smooth feet. You can also use smooth feed dogs but on some leathers it doesn't feed real well. With smooth feet you have to readjust the pressure since the feet will mark some soft leathers. Takes a little "tweaking". ferg
