I grew up on a farm, my oldest brother farmed all his life as did most of my family elders. Before I left for the service in 1952 we had draft horses, Percheron. Two jet black, two mares that were sorrel, and a Dappled grey stud, his name was Nick Settlemyer. Animals of all sizes and shapes have always been part of my life. I love them all but there is simply no more beautiful animal than a horse. Wife, daughter and I seen the movie "War Horse" this evening. The movie simply reinforced the love I have for them. If any of you have not seen this film, go, take plenty of tissues. Happy New Year everyone! ferg

I made mine of Melamine over MDF. Great surface, it can be washed off etc. ferg

My experience other than using for the "pigs", is sometimes in upholstering the seats on an auto. They could be used for a multitude of "holding" needs. ferg

I have the #195-2502 Interior, Ladies,Clutch from Chaylor-Fenneli. These have a thin layer of foam on the "glue" side with exception of the "fold" area which is a nylon type material. That area would not get glued, I know that much. Have been told to just glue the perimeter and not the area of foam. This doesn't sound correct to me but I would like anyone that has used these liners to give their experience and how did you do it. BTW: I am going to use Upholstery Leather on this one, it is very soft. ferg

Ah! Feed Dogs On Industrial Singer Scratching Leather!
Ferg replied to The Mean Tambourine's topic in Sewing Leather
As I said before, use a smooth feed dog. You may have to adjust the pressure on your smooth feet to make the leather feed properly. This works for me and you have no other "thingy's" to mess with. ferg -
Anyone Have A Cell # For Someone At Tippmann
Ferg replied to mlapaglia's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Michael, I have no cell number for you but I have a suggestion so you can get your stitcher up and running before next week. I use a product called Motor-Kote for everything. My sewing machine had a "Rubbing" sounding and a little hangup. I put this product on it and haven't had the problem since. It comes in a spray can as well as liquid containers. I am enclosing a URL for the company's home page with places that may be close enough to you so you can get it right away. http://www.motorkote.com/RetailStores.html If you have any idea where the "Hang" is on your machine you can spray or drip a little of the liquid on the spot, run through a couple cycles of the stitcher and I will be willing to bet money that short of a manufactured flaw, this will cure the problem. ferg -
Measure length you need, mark lightly, sew inside that area, cut your keepers in the spce you did not sew. Ferg uote name='mlapaglia' timestamp='1324942822' post='226201'] Wouldn't the thread unravel when you cut the keepers to length? Michael

You are not casing your leather coorrectly. Tandy leather has nothing to do with the problems you are having. Access the archives on this forum for casing lleather. Ferg te name='Suicide' timestamp='1324934036' post='226189'] I took another leather scrap that I got from one of Holland's shop. It is much thinner than that Tandy's (I would say Tandy is about 8-9 oz to me, that one is about 4 oz). Well, I have made some investigations, please look at the picture attached. I damped piece very much (not soaked though) and made the impressions 1 right after damping (0 minutes from "zero" ) just by pressing tool by hand. After 15 minutes leather looked pretty "wet" and I made impressions 2. Serie of imprints are done by pressing tool by hand and separate imprint number 2 is done with poly mallet strike. I spent 15 minutes more by watching TV and then (30 minutes since "Zero") I made imprints n.3 in the same way - serie just pressing, separate by mallet. Leather was ALMOST ready for tooling but a bit darker yet. 20 minutes more (50 mnutes from "Zero") - leather went into "just as it has to be for tooliing" - almost original color and cool. I made imprints numbered as 4 in the same way as above. Finally I took a hairdryer and dry this piece in 10 minutes. So, what would be your sentense? To me it sounds like Tandy's leather from the belt kit is sucks - it is hard to compress by tool while tooling and it is losing depressed shapes as it is going to be dry (perhaps of grain layer is going to shrink while drying). I HOPE I\m wrong about that belt kit blank, so please give me your suggestions. Thanks in advance!

I want to wish everyone on this forum a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Also wish to thank Wiz, Bob Kovar, Greg at Keystone and probably a few I have missed for all the time they spend helping myself and others. Wiz, If not for you, I would be gazing at my Consew 206RB5, still trying to figure out some of the things I have learned because of your expertise and willingness to help. I wish you all the happiness in the world. Keep pickin- that ole' guitar. ferg

Ipad Cover
Ferg replied to Double U Leather's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Love it!! You done a great job on the design and tooling. I am personally appalled at the number of folks that have no idea what the true meaning of Christmas is. Merry Christmas to you and your family and may God Bless, ferg -
You got 54 views. Everyone doesn't need to comment. The petal lifters have been made from everything imaginable. Nice job. Is that better? LOL Merry Christmas ferg

Peter, You are foremost an excellent artist and I really do not know how to explain how great your tooling is. Merry Christmas to you. ferg

Ah! Feed Dogs On Industrial Singer Scratching Leather!
Ferg replied to The Mean Tambourine's topic in Sewing Leather
If the reverse side isn't a problem with marks you need to use smooth feet. You can also use smooth feed dogs but on some leathers it doesn't feed real well. With smooth feet you have to readjust the pressure since the feet will mark some soft leathers. Takes a little "tweaking". ferg -

Sorry, You need to read my post again and understand what I said. There is nothing for either of you to get your shorts in a twist. I wasn't criticizing, simply pointing out that perhaps the content wasn't something very many folks would make comment on. The original poster was getting all up in the air because no one was apparently looking at or wishing to comment on his photo of his work. I didn't say anything negative about the person's work. BTW: Folks on this forum either work at leather as a hobby with a full time job or leather is a full time job. Under those circumstances there may not be as much time to "hang out" on a forum as in a lot of other forums that you and others may frequent. Whatever floats your boat. ferg

Call it what you like. You wondered why no one was commenting on your work. I simply said, "Maybe it is the content that no one is interested in." You stated, "actually i get almost no responses, comments, even LOOKS on here.....not too sure anybody actually uses this site....." Now that is what I call rude. ferg

Do you suppose it could be YOUR content? Haven't you read any of the archives etc.? ferg

Some Sort Of Edge Finish For Horween Shell Cordovan?
Ferg replied to onsh's topic in How Do I Do That?
The shell is very tight grain so it takes a little more work. I don't think you are going to get much finish with a hand burnisher on this leather.. Please access Bob Park/hidepounder in the archives for Burnishing edges. It is the most comprehensive information anyone can get. ferg -
I have a Landis 5 in 1 for sale if this is not available. Excellent condition. New parts, completely reconditioned. PM me if interested. ferg
