Hilly, I use motor oil on my stuff after applying dye and before applying antique, if used. After that I use Aussie leather conditioner. It still gets wet after a while but the tooling holds up really well, I like to tool deep. I use Fiebing's products, none of that ecoflow garbage for real world conditions. Hope this helps some.

Dave,I'll bet your seats are still good looking even after a lot of time and miles! Kind of like the way a quality saddle looks after being exposed to the elements and hard use.
-
Looks fantastic, Dave! Don't worry what the seats look like after they've been on the road for awhile. That's why you make them so they can be ridden hard and put up wet. I've seen a few of the seats I made for local bikes and they're holding up quite well and the ones I run on my bike look good. I tell people to put some Aussie stuff on it once in a while, or I can do it for them, but not too much. I want them to be able to give them good hard use. Weathered leather looks great! I know a local women rider who has a leather seat, not from me, that gets wet when it rains and she says it comes with the territory. She puts a lot of miles on her bike and the weathered seat looks cool. Sorry if I'm rambling .

El supero, Tom! Don't sweat not having enough time to lace, I LOVE rivets. Did you tell the customer that part of the payment was to let you take it down the strip for a few passes? I love drag racing!

The pilgrims tried it and it failed miserably. If someone likes socialism, there are plenty of countries in the world to move to. I prefer the system that was set up to preserve the rights of the individual not what is in the best interest of "the common good". I remember when Clinton promised a tax cut but later said he couldn't do it. One of the reasons he gave was because he thought we might not spend the money the right way. What arrogance! It's our money in the first place!

I was being sarcastic with the $50.00 an hour, but the point I was trying to make is if the government says this is a good minimum to pay someone wouldn't more be even better? One more question, where in the Constitution of the United States is the clause that gives congress ,or the president, the right to tell businesses how much to pay or how much vacation to offer?
-
Who should decide what a livable wage is? The government already tells business the minimum it can pay. If $7.75 an hour is good, why not raise it to $15.00 an hour. Why stop there? Raise it to $50.00 an hour and everybody would make a decent living wage. Maybe throw in mandatory 8 weeks paid vacation a year, too.

If you think health care is expensive now, wait until it's free. Check out how a lot of countries with "free" health care have to ration out meds or the waiting list for simple tests or procedures if they get done at all. It's IMPOSSIBLE to budget how much money would be needed for health care in a fiscal year because there are so many variables. Just think about how many people would run to the doctor, for any little reason, because it's "free". If the government is the sole health care provider then they OWN you. I think it's a control thing rather than the government having your best interest in mind. As usual, anytime the government gets involved in something they have no business being in,they bugger it up.

You're correct, it is an eyelet setter. I buy them at local hardware stores like Do It Best or Ace. The big box stores don't have them. They're in the specialty fastener bins in the same aisle as the stainless steel nuts and bolts.
-
Why would you order from them again if you didn't receive anything the first time? And then order a third time?
-
Go to Eastwood's website. They're an automotive specialty tool and product company. They sell a lead substitute for body work that works like lead but is far less toxic than actual lead.

Yes. The ones I've been getting lately ,mushroom out nice and smooth and they are very strong! The older ones split when they were peened but they really didn't catch on anything. I use a rivet setting tool to peen them. I think if you try them out you will be most happy with them. There are stainless steel ones available also, but they're kind of pricey.
-
I use tubular rivets on my seats and on most of my projects. The ends mushroom out really well and you can use a small washer on the end to be peened when joining two pieces of leather. They should have them at your local hardware store. They are El Fantastico!

I spoke to a rep. of Stevenson-Paxton yesterday on the phone. We talked for about 15 - 20 minutes. He was very helpful and listened to my concerns. I will be doing business with them in the future.

That's cool to help your friend out. Sounds like a lot of work to get the buckle spacing correct. One thing I use when making something are small machine screws and nuts to get the dimensions I need. It's a lot less work to take apart. At any rate, good job! P.S. How is that W&C leather compared to Hermann Oak? -

What Tom said. It's nice to see kids having other interests beside video games.
