I have some knowledge but not a pro. My understanding is that you do not want a secondary bevel on a splitter blade. Hone it down to a single bevel on a sheet of glass with 600 wet/dry paper held in place with spray glue. Once you have a single bevel switch to crocus cloth (about 2000 grit) paper. You will be amazed how well it will cut. I think Tandy puts the secondary bevel on them because it is faster and easier for the overseas factory to do. I just bought one of the skiving knives Tandy has on sale and the edge also has a large secondary bevel on it. It is not even usable as it is.

Preventing Immediate Wrinkles In New, Stiff, Veg-Tan Leather
electrathon replied to cameronmoss's topic in How Do I Do That?
Stiff, dry, pale, wrinkley leather does not sound like the leather that justifies high price point work. Before I read fergs comment I also thought I saw fat wrinkles. What brand leather are you using? Herman Oak or Wicket and Craig are good. -
Jumped In With Both Feet..uh Oh!
electrathon replied to corsetfitzbakersfield's topic in Sewing Leather
Just do a nice job. Your don't want the biker guys mad at you! But yes, I agree that a patcher would reach inside the lining with a fairly small opening. -
stelmackr has a few threads posted here with info about how to do this and differant ways to do it (like curved lettering). I got all of mine off of craigs list. Some of it reasonable and some very cheap.

You want some type from old school letterpress printing. Perfect letters, perfect spacing every time. You have to press them in instead of hammering them in, Look great every time.

I would be afraid of loosing the knife if the snap popped open. Easy way to loose a nice knife. Line the sheath and imbed the snap between the layers if you are going to do it.

220V Ez Clutch Motor Woes- Troubleshooting Help?
electrathon replied to MCM Ranch's topic in Sewing Leather
Water kills far more people than electricity. Rather than messing with a VFD, why not install a servo motor? About the same price and many people with clutch motors are going that way anyways. -

New Crank Splitter Tool, Need Help To Get Started
electrathon replied to Tex Shooter's topic in How Do I Do That?
I have split spme very dry/old leather and have never had any trouble with it. Grain/smooth side up. It will be obvious because one roller has gripper teath on it and one is smooth. If the blade is not sharpened correctly you will have trouble. It needs to have a perfectly straight edge and honed very sharp. Aaron -

As time gets closer it gets harder to be patient though, LOL. -
This thread has came up as a topic of discussion a few times. I offered to organize a group buy and had no intrest so I just bought a few rolls. Pretty nice looking thread. It is woven instead of simply twisted. I will have to sew a little to see how well it sews and looks when done. It does remind me of the braided thread that Tandy sells, I have used a lot of that and it works well. In hand I spent about $25 per 500 meter roll. A little spendy but not totally out of line. Aaron

Stewart, This may help. The stitch is a double needle, both moving forward and crossing in the center. Aaron

Stewart, Look up baseball stitch. There is a specific V stitch that is normally used on baseballs. The cover looks very good. Aaron

I talked to Paul today and he sent me a couple pics of the work he is going to be teaching at the class. Paul is a master carver and has an amazing knowledge of swivel knives and sharpening. Contact me if you are interested in attending. Aaron -
Pretty simple really. I use three pieces for the cover. 5/6 for the tooled front and back and 2/3 for the spine. Sew it together and trim to fit. It needs to have just a little free space, not too much but not tight. Add a 3" flap on the front and rear, lace around the perimeter. Attached pic shows the spine but not the inside flaps. Aaron

Try either using a stitch grover and poke the holes in the grove or if you do not want to grove use a stylus and "draw" a line down a straight edge. The thread will hide the line.

Minimalize the background space as much as possible. Less is better. Overlap the leaves to an extent. In nature leaves lay on top of other leaves. Aaron

I am curious about the spiral blades too. When I saw the thread title my first thought was what blade, then thought of spiral. I belt sand leather all the time and it works well. Not much differant than spiral blades and you could get into tight areas too. Aaron
