  1. Azenrain: The problem I see with Tandy is they charge a $5 handling fee. I live near Boise, ID which has a Tandy so I often will call and place an order and they send it to me. It's fast shipping time wise... but it's expensive with that handling fee. Another choice you might consider is Bruce at http://www.stecksstore.com He carries all of Tandy's stuff and will honor their flyer prices. If you see something in a Tandy flier, but it's not on his site, call him. The reason I recommend Bruce is his shipping is fast, inexpensive, and his regular prices online are comparable with Tandy's "Gold" membership prices. (He takes paypal too, which is really nice.)
  2. Don't forget your local Community College or local City Learning workshops. You would give up some of the $$ to them for space and such, but you already have established advertising in your community of you go this route via their catalogs. Leather guilds are another idea.
  3. Did you spell it correctly in google? Because the spelling on the picture is completely different than your spelling in the post.
  4. I would give upholstery leather a shot. The whole hides provide a lot more "yardage" than deer and other types of garment leathers. It's thin enough that you can sew it on a domestic machine provided you use the even feed foot and a leather point needle. (Better on an older all metal machine, btw) It also has more body than typical garment leathers so it will appear more sturdy. I would recommend Brettunsvillage for both upholstery and garment leathers. They ship free to the Contiguous 48 in USA no matter the size of order. Here's a page of garment leathers for you. http://www.brettunsv...ghtleather.html and there is some upholstery full hides in black about half way down on this page. http://www.brettunsv...ather/sides.htm Btw.. these folks are more of a surplus seller. They buy odd lots so you will never know what awesome leather you'll find at a discount... they also have some hardware and often they have pre-cut sleeves and what-nots. The hardest part, I think would be, ordering enough to make the dress but still not have too much waste. (don't forget you can glue a stiffener or stabilizer to the back of light weight leather to give it more body.) Good luck with your project. I can't wait to see how it turns out.

It's a passive solar heater that I threw together last year from styro foam and a hunk of aluminum siding it sits inside my south facing front window. Check your PM, I'll send you pics from last year.

  6. Have you tried the typical sewing machine issues troubleshooting techniques yet? Are you sure you have it threaded correctly with the presser foot UP? Is the needle fully inserted and oriented correctly for the machine? Is the bobbin unspooling in the correct direction? Do you have thread and needle sizes matched? You might thy taking the thread and bobbin out and sew a piece of scrap leather without threads. That can tell you if it is a tension problem or not. It it still breaks needles it's probably a timing issue. Good luck.
  7. +100 for Cobra Steve. He's been mighty good to me and worked within my budget.
  8. Before you go tossing a fit at Tandy. Make sure your straps are actually the size that matches the punch. If you are cutting your own with a strap cutter chances are that it's slightly larger than the measurement you think it is. Measure first. Then if needed pitch fit.
  9. I'm not sure I would want to carve old things. I have used pieces upcycled from boots etc., before. I learned from Katsass here that chrome tanned has a faint bluish grey line on a cut edge. Veg tan is pretty much the same color all the way through.
  10. isn't that a monkey fist knot? Like this? Could also be a globe knot.
  11. Worried about those who live in the path of the Frankenstorm. Hope you are prepared.

Jack, I didn't rush out and get anything, just filled some jugs with water and coffee (gotta have my caffeine) but I know we're going to get something. This time of year it's time we at least had some snow :)

It is not theories any more. I know people that lives on Svalbard, It is never been that litle ice as it is now. This summer you could cross the North pole with a ship http://www.ottawacitizen.com/technology/rotten+North+Pole+scientist/7282731/story.html. I have seen on video too. All this water has to come back as rain and heavy weather. I am sorry to say we are past the theories now.

  12. Yes, the same Syl from Jamplay. Glad to see you sold your machine. That should help for a bit anyway.
  13. This one? http://www.parts.sin...53B8_153B8B.pdf There are other 153's listed at http://parts.singerc...m/IPinstManuals as well. Parts charts are here. http://www.parts.singerco.com/IPpartCharts/ again there are several models starting with 153.
  14. Happy Birthday Cobra Steve. :)

  15. I've used them quite a bit. Same issues with black as others. Rose is actually a very bright pink. I get mine at Dharmatrading in Cali... it's much cheaper for me to get them there than to get them from Turtlefeathers due to shipping. I don't think they have quarts though...
  16. Anyone else having issues with the forum's new colors ie: Grey on Brown, Grey on Pinky beige? It makes my eyes cross.

NEVER touch "change theme". I did, too, and had to go on my PHONE, log on, change it back. Once you change it on the pc, you don't have an option to get it back... and you can't see any forum info, etc. etc. Nightmare.

Yep, me too on the change theme. Johanna. My main issue with the colors is the lack of contrast. All you have to do is either darken the brown, so the grey shows up in the menue... and just darken the grey text, (or bold) on the pinky beige. Those of us with older eyes (and there are a lot of us here) need contrast to see.

I struggle too - can only handle about 10 minutes before the headache starts. The grey text is an eye-killer, but like the beige background MUCH better. Gobs of white space are hard on the ol eyes.

  17. High lighters are a pretty easy to use. You put them on thick, working the stuff into the stamp and carved impressions and wipe it off right away leaving the stuff in the cuts. As to your dilemma with colors. I would probably go sideways and dye the strap a dark blue. Then your rusty brown would show up.
  18. Sorry to hear about your troubles... just went through 4 years of that myself. Finally getting back in my feet. I'm not interested in the Cobra... but if you need a supportive ear, or $$$ saving ideas PM me. I could probably right a book.
  19. All you need is a small compressor that at least meets the max PSI for the airbrush, a regulator (to regulate the air from the compressor) a water trap, (especially important in humid areas) The airbrush (recommend dual action) and the fittings to put it all together.
  20. Way off topic but I thought you should know that Weird isn't necessarily a bad thing. Weird comes from the old English word weyard... which comes from the anglo-saxon Wyrd... which is the name of their Goddess of Fate. So... I would think being "weird" is a good thing... it makes you special. As for your question. I don't care for lacing either..... to me it makes a piece look cheap. I know the amount of work it takes but most of the laced things I've seen have been laced with awful plastic feeling lace. I'll do it if I have to but If I can I will always go for a cleaner look.
  21. Just get a few cans of paint and hand them to her....let her spray paint them.
  22. ha ha ha that's a good one.
  23. That is definitely a superior tutorial. Did you make your front tabbed piece from the card stock pattern you made? Or did you use the tape? Also have you tried this on.... it might be that the angle is just because there is not a foot in there to hold it straight.
