  1. hey Billy, what weight leather did you use for that glock holster?...and do you vacuum mold?...the detail on that is impressive..
  2. shooter, once again you have inspired me...im a few hours away from finishing up a glock holster that i am making for myself...i would have never belived there was such a thing as a good looking glock holster until I saw the "overkill" holster you made...
  3. Nice Matt...one of these days when i stop using drum dyed, i might have to try that dye..ive heard both good and bad about it, but you nailed it...how about a pic of the back, id really like to see how it attaches..im working on my second avenger style crossdraw now...its actualy a pretty simple design once you stop trying to make it a left handed holster and think strong side speed scabbard, but im not real happy with the grip clearance...
  4. awsome work sixer..it turned out great...i broke 2 needles the other day on my cobra sewing a 3/4 inch welt..not sure how that happened yet...
  5. There is no way we can shoot up all the ammo that has been bought recently either...its the advertising guys that says, hey, i know how we can make a few extra bucks" that worries me...i know most of the people that we routinely deal with(ie site sponsors) wouldnt do something like that, but if it affects them on their end, tanneries jacking up the price for a "percieved" shortage, then they will have to pay to stay up and running...thats the issue i was getting at in the first post..not that im in a panic or have the scare bug, its that there is a world of idiots out there and and just as many predators, and you can be the calmest, biggest, most gentle cow in the world, and still get trampled when the herd stampedes...
  6. Ladies and Gents, we are in the wrong business or just not advertising right...as a gun owner and reloader, i have watched with disgust as this buying frenzy has obliterated the chances of any but the wealthy from securing arms or ammunition. 2 months ago, 1000 pieces of 5.56 brass, fully processes and shipped was around 80 bucks..it is now over 200 and climbing daily. Loaded ammunition is is upward of a dollar per round... this is a new definition for insanity...almost as bad as the tulip futures in early amsterdam...has anyone else seen this creeping into our livelyhoods?..will tanneries claim a leather shortage due to larger companies stocking up to provide holsters for all the guns that have been sold in the last 2 months?...should we all start hoarding our scraps and charging based on what could happen in the future?...sorry for the rant, but it seems the world went crazy when i want looking...and i broke a holster last night..ive never seen leather snap like a toothpick before...
  7. I have recently switched to WC drum dyed for the majority of my work. Every now and then, il get an order for a non standard color, and ill order some HO from springfield, but i have to say that the time i save on not dying and drying is phenominal, especialy as how it gets pretty cold here in KY. I ordered my WC holstered as well, and the temper is a bit stiff, but i dont tool so i have no issues there. It does make for an incredibly rigid holster, but cutting is a chore. I used to make hybrids, and if i were to start again, i stay with the drum dyed black..no smell and no dye transfer worries, quick and easy to produce...
  8. ive run into this from time to time with HO and WC that has been "holstered"...th eonly way ive found to beat it is multiple light passes and a lot of stropping...ive even narrowed one side of my head knife to deal with these hides...seems to help a little...
  9. not much else to add here..that is some fine work...very creative and to be done with out a store bought pattern is really something...
  10. i feel you Dwight..i have one of those challenges on my rack right now drying...customer wanted an IWB for a sig 220 with a laser/light viridian x5l attached....i didnt ask why..some people are just too "tacticool" to argue with...its the largest thing this side of a saddlebag...i had to layer in a piece of kydex to keep the mouth open for reholstering...that was a challenge trying to wet mold and heat at the same time...unfortunately for me, it didnt turn out near as nice as your cross draw..good work as usual..
  11. ive completely finished holsters before only to realize i was supposed to cut in a belt tunnel...its still on my wall as a reminder to slow down
  12. try not to get the leather as wet when you go to the molding stage..5-7 second dunk is all it needs, then let it sit for a bit
  13. sprinkle in some leather dust ...sand a piece of leather and you will have plenty all over the place..
  14. I agree with Michael...i shoot for 16 oz overall weight...usually 2 pieces of 7/8, but the 10/11 4/5 combo would be spot on...
  15. hey Dawg, check up a few posts...i posted a link to the finished product...i think these were my last hand sewn holsters before i went to the machine...she went with the xd 9mm sub compact...wicked little shooter...fast lock time and great springs...i shoot about 20000-25000 rounds a year, and that little xd runs just as fast as anything ive ever shot...
  16. the bags i used a pattern from WG, the pommel holster and bag were my own, and the scabbard was inspired by one i saw on here...
  17. very cool...i would round off the top corners though...those look pointy...but that might have been your intentions with all the various angles and such...good work..
  18. i used the Rose dye from Angelus...they turned out pretty well...very very pink.. http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=41823&hl=pink&st=0#
  19. Hey All... They are finally all done now...i found the saddlebags to be daunting at first, but after a good read on here about how somebody made motorcycle saddlebags, they were actually pretty simple...i also used the wet formed bag tutorial on here, but made a clamping jig for the bag instead of nailing around the edge...many thanks to all those who fielded questions along the way...now to address my growing holster backlog...no rest for the wicked...
  20. these clips dont appear to be kydex, but some other some of thermo plastic poly whatnot..they are a full 1/8 inch thick and seem pretty durable...unfortunately, they are also 8.50 apiece...
  21. yeah, those are pretty expensive there...id like to see the same type of clip that minatuar uses, but at 1 or 1 1/2 wide, and about half as long....kind of like a mix between these two
  22. I use one on the range, and that is about it...retention screw backed all the way out...it is only god for fast presentations and I wouldnt wear it for anything else..they are just to bulky and uncomfortable for me..
  23. I think your conceptual designs are pretty good, i dont see anything that really stands out as red flag wavers...the things i have noticed are more in technique...now bear in mind, im a picky little snot, so take it for what its worth...first, it looks like you have the leather way to wet when you are forming it...after i have my holsters all sewn up, it gets a quick dip in warm water, maybe 5-7 seconds max for 7-9 oz leather, then i let it sit for a few minutes before i put the gun in and start forming...when forming, you want to rub all of th eleather and not just the areas you want to recess...using a rubbing stick or a bone folder will give it a more uniform look...your stitch length looks a little on the long side...i like 5 or 6 spi for holsters...if you dont have a stitch length wheel, use a ruler and mark a hole every 4mm...this works out to 5 spi...try to make your stitchlines connect and flow a bit more...even sharp curves look better than 90 degree turns...sometimes it is unavoidable, but try to minimize it...edging, even on IWB's, is very important to me...spend alot of time on them and read some of the tutorials on edging here...good luck and have fun...
  24. Were on the same page here CT, ive made a ton of something similar for the guys I work with...somewhere around 40 of these...i willing to bet you have a bit more work into yours though...mine are pretty simple, but the inside out was a real big hit here...
