This Has Got To Be A Biginner Question. Cement tops keep sticking closed
toxo replied to AzShooter's topic in Getting Started
I love Toluene. Cleans brushes, spatulas etc in a heartbeat and thins down my contact adhesive when it gets too thick. There are probably fumes or somesuch to think about but I don't care. Put some on a cloth and run it around your glue top before closing up. -

Here's some UK stuff that I've not seen before. Claims are great and cheap enough. Anyone tried it? -
Adhesive recommendation... Pig skin to Chrome

You're making problems where there are none. Use contact cement especially around the edges. Use whatever to align, bolts/cocktail sticks through holes. if really finicky use some pieces of slippery stuff between the glued parts that you can pull out as and when. The fuel/water protection is down to what you put on afterrward. Good luck and don't forget to show us pictures. -
Nice Job Lily. Is the name burn't on or stamped and dyed? Don't know where you're from but over here in the UK the prices of puppies have gone through the roof and hence dog stealing is getting worse. For this reason we're encouraged to just put an address or phone number on the collar instead of a name so whoever steals the dog doesn't know what to call it. It's a shame because the name thing is part of our love for the dog.

Like I said, I had a quick look and couldn't see it and I knew it was somewhere and I'm fairly computer savvy so what does that tell you? I would go further and add a link on this page I'm typing on right now that's inviting people to post pics but doesn't give any help when they can't post em.

This suggests that you're hot stamping. It also suggests that the flesh side is fairly smooth. Have you considered foiling? Comes in gold silver blue pink etc etc. The point being the temperatures used for foiling are much lower and the contact is very brief compared to hot stamping

This comes up an inordinate amount of times and it's come up again today. I know theres a post about it somewhere but I just had a quick look and I couldn't find it. Why is it not stickied on the top of "How do I do that?"

FWIW Klara the bungee idea is incorporated in many yacht mooring/anchor lines to eliminate "snatch" when the boat is dancing on the waves. it would save your arm somewhat when he's pulling. You would have to trial & error to find the strength of bungee needed to hold the dog without releasing unintentionally. Good luck and don't forget to come back and show the result with pics. We love pics on here. There was someone who did really awesome sighthound tooled collars on here. Think they were from an Eastern Bloc country. Can anyone find it for Klara?

I was thinking about looking at some of the principles. Maybe they don't have to be metal. I'm not sure what you want this collar to do but off the top of my head imagine the main part of this hook to be a stiff piece of leather folded back on itself. now imagine the main leash just attached to the oval retainer. Now imagine a short length of bungee rubber attached to the eye and sewn onto the main leash in such a way as to leave an amount of slack in the main leash when the rudder is taut but not pulled. The idea being when walking the dog the rubber is taking the strain. When you want a quick release you pull on the leash, stretching the rubber enough for the main leash to slip the oval to let the dog run free. It's a bit rough but I've only just thought of it and merely offered as an example of what might be done.

It's just a roller with a shoulder at each end that sits in a trough. If you don't know anyone with a lathe it wouldn't be hard to dowith a drill and a small grinder and a file. I can provide the measurements.

I remembered the name Pelican hook from my sailing days long ago. Might give you some inspiration. https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1AOHY_enGB783GB783&q=pelican+hook&tbm=isch&chips=q:pelican+hook,g_1:quick+release:Xm_qFvuBYcc%3D&usg=AI4_-kQc_4kihO_CWqDPPJAgUaUoACQ8bg&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjuoIu70NrvAhWLa8AKHRXnD9IQgIoDKAB6BAgFEAY&biw=1600&bih=813

Exactly. It makes no sense to have one rule for quali and then change it for race day but it was what it was so why allow Hamilton to do it around 30 times during the race and then was told to stop doing it?

I started my business with nothing.... and I've still got most of it! -
What a race that that turned out to be. As a Hamilton fan I was getting despondent with his tyres going off and Verstappen catching him with time to spare. Then Verstappen overtook him but had to give the place back because he'd exceeded track limits to do so and Hamilton goes on to scrape a win. The thing is, Hamilton had exceeded track limits many times earlier in the race until Mercedes were warned not to do it. The difference being that when Hamilton did it he wasn't gaining a place. Surely this needs tidying up. Supposedly there's a different rule on track limits for qualifying and racing. But if it's allowed on race day why was Hamilton warned to stop doing it? What say you?

Welcome Klara. You're doing well so far. Maybe look at coursing dog collars like Greyhounds, lurchers etc for inspiration. They use quick release all the time.

I've seen that done before. Never realised how quick and handy it would be. Nice one.

I use a Scharfix lookalike in black. Cost me around £90. When I first tried it I almost threw it in the bin but as I got used to it'd little foibles I found it to be quite capable in a limited way. It's ok with veg tan types but I found it stretched the edge on softer leathers. Then I found a little trick that all these type of skivers can benefit from. Say you want a 20mm skive. Using a smallish roller start off at the 20mm mark and work outward. When you get to the edge you'll have a small area left meaning less pulling pressure and less stretch. You'll have to play around a bit. You may have to start at 25mm to get the best result. Of course you need a sharp blade so here's another trick. The blades come in different thicknesses and the thicker ones can be resharpened but I couldn't find any at a decent price until I found these, https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07BH7CNC3/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm no expert but I know some just trap both threads under the presser foot in the down position and don't hold it at all. Don't know if you can do it with all machines.
