New Beer Growler Carrier
garypl replied to garypl's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Thanks everyone! Kiwican - the carry strap goes under the growler and there is another hidden strap that goes from one side, under the growler and up the other side, so they form a cross under the growler to support it. I used a jiffy rivet to hold the straps together where they cross each other. I already gave it to him so I can’t take another picture. Gary -
Wallet with name carving
garypl replied to Stetson912's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
I use a squeeze bottle with a very fine tip to color letters/carving details with acrylic paint. Works very well and is pretty easy to keep the needle tip down in the carving or stamp. Gary- 6 replies

Ryan - those look great! I like the carving you did - must have taken a long time to complete. Only critique is the belt on the back side - the light color doesn’t match the nice tan of the rest of the leather. Why did you leave it lighter? You are a busy guy - keep up the good work! Gary

Wallet with name carving
garypl replied to Stetson912's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Turned out real nice! I think the carved name would look better if the background was lighter in the lower RH corner. Name kind of disappears a bit into the background. Did you trim the edges after you stitched the wallet? Your stitching is nice and even and close to the edges - looks good. Gary- 6 replies

Lee Marvin style belt & holster set-up
garypl replied to RegisD's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Nice looking work, but looks like it is a challenge getting the buckles through the pants loop! The Professionals - one of my favorite western movies.... Gary -
I respectfully disagree - I think lack of practice and carelessness by the person are the biggest causes for AD’s. Been carrying/using 1911’s for over 40 years with no AD’s. That is why I normally recommend to new or casual shooters to use a DA revolver unless they plan to practice regularly and become proficient with a semiauto. Everyone should do what they feel comfortable with, but safety should always be number one priority regardless of type of firearm being used! Gary

I really like the look, especially the painting! How secure is the retention? Gary -

Newbie Progress Report - Servo & Speed Reducer
garypl replied to gr8legs's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Nice work putting that all together! I like that handwheel - how durable would you expect it to be? This whole 3D printing thing is hard for me to understand! I am using a speed reducer that I bought from Cowboy Bob and it was very simple to install. Simply remove the motor, attach the speed reducer where the motor was mounted, then bolt the motor to the bottom of the speed reducer frame and use another belt to connect the two assemblies. I was able to use the original belt to connect the speed reducer to the machine head. Gary -
I use a speed reducer with a 206RB and I simply swing the head back - the belt goes loose, then when I put the head back the belt tightens up. No problems with belt falling off. Gary

Looks very nice! Gary -
You are right - strange they don’t list used equipment, but they have a ton! Ask for Mel and he will give you a tour of the place. Gary

Mary Rose flask
garypl replied to Brushpopper's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
That flask looks great and I really like your picture of Duncan Reynaldo - many on this forum probably do not remember “Cisco and Pancho!” Brings back good memories for me. Gary -
Chris, no, I bought the Consew from a business that was moving and had been using a much larger Brother machine. Didn’t have time to fix the Consew, so I got a deal. Sewing Machine.com is down near Sweetwater Brewery - right off I85 south of Lenox Mall. You should ride down there some time - they have a huge assortment of new and used machines, supplies, accessories for sewing. Gary

It may be a challenge to find a machine capable of sewing medium leather for $375 - depends what you mean by medium leather. I often look at Craigslist and you may find something pop up, but good deals are usually snapped up quickly. Check your local sewing machine dealer - I recently visited one here in Atlanta and they had many, many used machines in all price ranges. Good luck! Gary

To keep your stitches straight you should use a compass divider to scribe a stitch line around the edges. Then use either a chisel or pricking punch to mark your holes. Use a sharp awl to punch through the marks - you can mark a line on both sides and watch carefully where the awl is starting to come through and adjust so it hits the back line. I use a roller pen to apply paint to edges and it allows a slightly thicker coat of paint which will flow to fill in voids. Have not had any problem using this method. Still need to sand and apply several coats. Gary

As long as the dye is thoroughly dry it will be fine. Whenever you are not certain, just try on a scrap piece before using on your project! Gary

Thanks for the tip - I will try to find some locally! Gary

Thanks Hooiam - these are the videos I watched first before I retired my machine - certainly helped me to understand the poorly written manuals! I see the adjustment, but can’t seem to get the feed regulator rod to move and I don’t want to force it. For now I am just turning the work 180 degrees and backstitching this way. I am hoping one of the experts on here might be able to offer some advice! Gary

I have a fully functional clutch motor that I received when I bought a used Consew 206RB. The original owner replaced it with a servo and speed reducer. I have no need for it, so if anyone is interested, you can have it for free - just pay UPS Ground shipping from Atlanta, GA. Appears to weigh around 30-35 lbs. I tested it and everything worked. If anyone wants it, let me know your city, state and zip code and I will check how much it will cost to ship. I hope someone can make use of this! Gary
