Glad you could join in, Sam. If you search around here, you'll find plenty of members from the Lone Star! If I might make a suggestion: on forums like this, using capital letters means you're trying to emphasize something - essentially yelling. Kinda like I might say, HEY SAM, QUIT USING ALL CAP!!!
  2. Gotta say that I really like that!!
  3. I SO suck at lacing! I guess I don't have the patience or talent or something, but my attempts at lacing look like a 3-year old did it! If you only do those things that you're good at, life will get real boring real fast. Try new things, keep at them, and keep trying to improve. Each new thing you do will lead you down a new path and you will discover things that you didn't even know you were capable of before. And have fun!
  4. The only people who don't occasionally screw something up are either not doing anything or are screwing up and lying about it! The most humiliating thing - IMHO - is to make a sheath or holster and then realize that it's the wrong direction (e.g., left handed instead of right handed). Usually that's the one that went smoothly and turned out great - but now gets tossed out!
  5. Welcome!
  6. WTF, indeed. First, why would anyone want to screw around with a useful material that has thousands of years of history? What are the alternatives for getting rid of animal hides? Burning?? Burying? Stupid. Finally, this: “By the end of the year, I think we’ll be able to produce a two centimeter by two centimeter sample of leather that’s made without killing an animal,” Really?!? Ooooh, that's impressive! Who's giving them money to waste on this project??
  7. Ditto - though I suspect most everybody thought you rocked before the upgrade! Nice job!
  8. Very nice job on the sheath! It really goes well with that knife Karud has some very nice looking knives in his gallery. Well worth the time to click on his hyperlink.
  9. Grinder and sander? Ouch! You can ruin a small piece of steel very quickly. If you don't have a good stone, you can use very fine sandpaper with a little oil on it on a flat surface to do your sharpening. A lot of woodworkers will sharpen tools with a series of finer papers mounted on a piece of glass.
  10. When I was in high school I worked for a furniture store. The owner had an old sewing machine he used for putting edging on pieces of carpeting. It was originally designed to be pedal operated and had a heavy flywheel, but an electric motor had been added. Being kids we played with it a bit and found that it sewed just fine without the motor - it would get pretty tiring if you did a bunch of rugs.
  11. There's a reason you've never heard of anyone buying a coyote fur coat.
  12. Welcome!
  13. The only feathers being ruffled are mine after reading your comment. Nothing in my post was about politics. If you read that into it, you are completely wrong. In fact, you're so off base with that comment that I can't believe you read it at all. This is NOT a WWII historical item. It is a modern leathercrafter making a sheath by copying a 75-year old style. I stated that it might not be the most popular choice to imitate a regime that tried to conquer the world and killed millions of people in the process. I was right in my brief observation. Some people actually hold a grudge about that, and understandably so. Do not f***ing tell me that "we (as a community) decided". Last time I checked, I'm also a member on here. I didn't advocate a political stand of any kind. You're way off base and I take offense to your post.
  14. Seitengemehr = Bayonet Probably not going to receive much karma from using a Nazi-era style, but you did do an amazing job on the lettering.
  15. When my son was in high school, I somehow inherited the school band's web site, which was on GoDaddy. I was absolutely thrilled at the help they gave me. I was able to upgrade the site for very little cost and provide all sorts of options, with the GoDaddy staff ready to answer any questions - without burying me in acronyms and technical terms. The guy who took it over after me needed to make some changes. I helped him with the things that he could change, but when some of the changes went beyond that, I told him about my experiences with the staff. He called me a few days later to thank me and say that his experience was the same - they stayed on the line and walked him through everything he needed.
  16. Very nice display!! Thanks for sharing the pictures!
  17. It's hard to see much detail in the photos. Honestly, your photo skills suck ALMOST as bad as mine! (I've pulled up old photos and thought, "Wow! That's really terrible - oh, wait, I did that!) Terrible background, too. But, of course, you weren't looking for photographic comments. The sheath goes well with the knife. I don't know that I like the way the belt loop is set up, but that's just me. The stitching could use some "love". You put a lot of stamp patterns on the sheath, but they don't all go together and it kinda becomes like random noise. I'd rather see it kept simple, or kept minimal. I don't want to be too critical because it's really hard to tell much about details in these photos. Like I say, the style does go well with that knife and it's not bad. I always have great respect for a person that sincerely wants to have his work reviewed because he wants to continue to improve. Nobody can do that looking at their own work; you will see certain flaws that may mean nothing to a customer, but miss things that would really improve the quality.
  18. So that's the secret to getting good answers - post the question then come back every couple of years to see what people came up with!!
  19. Do you have an idea of how you want it to look? That's a good starting point. Getting the holster around the pistol is not particularly hard, but there are several possible ways to connect the holster to your belt or waistband - like clips, snaps, etc.
  20. I would just sew it. That gets rid of the shiny rivets and you won't have to add the goat skin lining.
