  1. I'm a fulltime Firefighter/EMT and on my days off I'll do whatever pays. If I'm not working on my days off I watch the kids. As the wife works 3rd shift. Shes a RN Mike
  2. I ordered a book from them. Fast and friendly I would order from them again in a heartbeat. I screwed up and didn't order all the books I wanted and now they went up. LOL go figure. Mike
  3. Greywynd, tonyc1, and hidepounder Thank you all for your help and information. I figured as with everything else in life what works for one may not work for others. That's why it's so good to hear how everyone does it different. So if one way doesn't work for me I have other methods to try that may. Wow Greywynd !!Thanks for all the information it cleared up some of the muddy water!! Mike
  4. Thanks Randy I'll have to keep that in mind. Mike
  5. jawilliams, and tonyc1 Hey thanks alot fellas. I think i'll watch ebay and see what comes up. Mike
  6. Now that some gracious members have given me some know how on sharpening my splitter blade. I'm not sure what stone or stones to buy. Hell you've got Japanese, Arkansas, diamond, and probably a few others as well. And they all claim to be the best!! And grits from 300 to 8,000 that I saw. So my question is what would be the best stone for sharpening all my leather tools on. And what range of grit should a fella have. I reckon it would be nice to have 3 to 4 different grits but I'm not sure which. And where is a good source to buy from. So before I throw my hard earned money down I would like yawl's opinion and guidance. Thank you in advance!! Mike
  7. Bree If I mess up that blade wont no one know but be me and the dog I throw it at!! Mike
  8. Thanks Bree!! Mike
  9. 8thsinner I think it's a nice looking knot. I aint sure about all the other stuff ya were talking about. But I like the knot. Mike
  10. Greywynd, and Bree Thanks for the information I'll be off to the hardware store Monday to find some suitable stones. I just have some banna shaped ones from sharpening knives on. And I'll have to check into that surface plate. Bree do you have a picture of the type of jig you were talking about. This site never seizes to amaze me with all the knowledge people are willing to share. Mike
  11. Thanks Art So I reckon I can push or pull I just wanted to make sure. I don't have a buffing wheel. But under no circumstances no matter how badly I want to I wont touch the backside of the blade lol. Thanks again Art Mike
  12. Thanks Bob, and Bruce That should get me started. A couple more questions. Does it matter if you pull the stone into the edge of the blade or should you go away from the edge. And what about the burr that is made on the bottom of the blade. Will that just wear off over time. And final question if I screw this up what would it cost to have someone sharpen it right. I know I really need to learn how to do this so I'm going to give it a whirl. But it's always good to know ones options!! Thanks again for the help Mike
  13. I was wondering if someone could tell me the correct way to sharpen a 8inch splitter blade. It's not plumb dull but it needs more than just a stropping. I was wondering what grit of stone to use and what angle to the blade should be sharpened at. Thanks for any help. Mike
  14. ACE I'm sorry to say I've never heard of the man so I can't help you there. But I bet if you post a picture of your belts someone on this forum can probably make one to match. In either case I wish you luck!! Mike
  15. Steve Thank you for your reply I was beginning to wonder if I had pissed everyone off some how lol. I was kinda thinking the same thing. I just got to wondering because the fella used it for upholstery work. I think fabric as well as leather and I figured that stuff was pretty thin. Thanks for your time. I reckon I'll leave it alone. Mike
  16. Ron First off I want to welcome ya to a great site!! If it was me I would save my money and get a old Osborne. I think you would be much happier . Which ever way you choose to go I wish you luck. Mike
  17. Howdy to all I have a few questions on my pfaff. I was trying to sew some real thin stuff maybe 1 to 2oz and the back presser foot would not come down far enough to meet and move the leather. Is there a way to lower the foot or do I need a different foot. In the pictures I'm posting you can see the piece of roo under the foot and I was able to slide a quarter into the space between the leather and the foot. And I apologize if I'm not using the right terminology. My next ? I need to sew some new wool on a couple of our saddles. How big of thread can I run right now I'm using 138 on the top can I go bigger or will the 138 be big enough. I'm using 120 size needles with the 138 but some 140 size came with the machine. As always any help is greatly appreciated. Mike
  18. entiendo It looks like when you made tour turn with the blue thong you went over two. I think when you make your turn you need to go over one. And then when you make your next turn you'll go over two splitting parallels. I have found that when I split parallels I always go over two then under two. In the other pictures it looks like you went under two first. Hope this helps Mike
  19. I'm in sign me up!!!!!! Mike
  20. entiendo Thanks for posting the pics. I'm on duty right now and the computers aint the best here(they suck)so it will be in the morning before I can get a good look. Sorry for the delay Mike
  21. entiendo can you take a picture of the blue thong where it makes it turn before coming back down. I'm not sure but something just doesn't seem right with that thong as it's coming down. It would be nice to see your turn. Mike
  22. entiendo I've looked at that knot until my eyes hurt!! I just can't tell were ya went wrong. Maybe if ya start over and take a picture of the foundation and then one when you build your parallels and so on. So we can see the knot as it progress's. Just a idea. Keep after it we'll eventually get it figured out. I know I've spent days on a knot I've been stuck on and finally a light will click on. Mike
  23. entiendo It looks like you had finished the knot and then came back trying to braid in a extra string. I really can't tell from the pictures but thats my best guess. I'm at work right now and the screen aint the best. I'm hoping someone else will chime in here and let us know for sure. If not when I get home in the morning and get some time I'll try and get a better look at it. Best of luck!! Mike
  24. Well the girls got a wii and the boy got a remote controlled dump truck and the wife got a ipod touch. We all got clothes and a bunch of other little toys and such. One of the great moments for me besides being with family was getting my 9 y/o to believe in Santa another year. The kids at school have been saying there was no such person and she was starting to believe them. So this year I found some brass sleigh bells and the reindeer left one for each kid with a note from Santa saying three of his reindeer had been promoted and they wanted to leave their old ones to some special kids. I'm afraid she's growing up and I aint to sure I like it much. Such is life!! I hope everyone has a good Christmas and a Happy New Year!!! Mike
  25. I got a pretty cool old Gerstner oak machinist tool chest to keep my stuff in. It's 26" long 16 1/2 tall 9" deep with 11 different drawers and it weighs a little bit. I don't have it loaded up yet but I'm fixin to. And then I'll be mobile look out!!! Mike
