If you are not tooling it should be fine. If you are tooling I think it may need to be thicker but I'm not a tooler so I'm not sure. My best search results come from Google searches that bring up 5 or 6 threads from here. I think this original leatherworker site has been up for a long time, so the search feature is a little dated. Just open another browser and search. It will always lead you back here for the best answers. P.s. I just got me some cxl from Maverick and am looking forward to some wallets.

Will I get better leather if I order....
bikermutt07 replied to SouthernCross's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
I ordered some stuff from Maverick the other day and I was really pleased. They are kind of old school in their ordering, but even for my small order, they were really friendly. Just sharing for newer folks..... They will open an order for you and tag your items in the computer. They will give you a couple of days before they close and fill the order if you need it. This allows you to change items or add something different. They were really kind and helpful. I only bought about 80.00 worth of closeouts and seconds, but I was treated like a regular customer ordering a pallet of hides. It was a nice first experience. -

Fwiw Rocky mountain leather supply has 15 colors available in .06, .08,1.0 mm in 25m lengths on Amazon. I ordered some last night to try. They run $6.99 a spool. Yeah, it's a little steep. But if I like it I will order larger amounts from Abbey.

Not all holsters are for guns

On an important note........ I went into an IKEA in Portland, ONCE! I'll be damned if I go to that place again. What kind of business continually confuses and intentionally misdirects you through their garbage to the point that you consider using an emergency exit (more than once) just to leave??? Never again.

Are expensive whet stones worth it?
bikermutt07 replied to Artificial Intelligence's topic in Sharpen it!
I don't think I'm getting a wire at all. I do look at the blade through a loop from time to time as I sharpen. As I'm using the sandpaper tiny hairs develop almost like shavings on a magnet. I think these "shavings" are taking the place of the wire due to my technique. But they aren't stuck. I usually wipe it off on my jeans and carry on. At least this is my theory. I do notice a bit of difference in cutting between the 2000 grit and the strop. Cause, you know, I like to abuse paper. -
Congratulations on the move. Have fun unpacking.

Are expensive whet stones worth it?
bikermutt07 replied to Artificial Intelligence's topic in Sharpen it!
The sharper the better I use automotive sandpaper up to 2000 and then strop. I just lay the sandpaper on my granite top and pull away from the edge. If I am just maintaining an edge I start at 800 and work my way up. When I get something new and dull I usually start at 220. Unless I'm reprofiling. One thing that bothers me about this is I never develop that wire edge that has to be stropped off? -
I'd risk being called a sissy to carry that around. Really beautiful piece.

Working With Austin Double Shoulder Leather
bikermutt07 replied to Beachside Art's topic in How Do I Do That?
Tandy sells overpriced low quality leather. You can get anything comparable for less elsewhere that will be better quality. Check out Springfield, Maverick, or Hide House, or Arcadia.- 5 replies

First wallet
bikermutt07 replied to OneRedBear's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
That's cool. I just knew it wasn't easy to come by them skulls. They didn't even make back patches out of them. If you wanted it on your back it was either a 500 dollar jacket or a 300 dollar vest. I opted for the vest. Turns out the snaps wouldn't even stay buttoned at 60 with a windshield. I was pissed. But I digress. If you want the quality of those wallets you need two things. Lots of time pouring over information here and lots of time at the bench. It will take awhile, but you will get there. I'm not there yet, so we can go together. Haha.- 11 replies
