wallet leather weight
MADMAX22 replied to dscott's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Ive only made a couple of wallets and they arent biker wallets but they are trifold wallets that went to myself and another biker so maybe that qualifies. Anyways I made it out of 3-4oz for the main body, lined the main billfold portion with pigskin liner, and used the vegtan calf that tandy sells for the card slots and such, the calf probably came in at 2oz. Ive had mine for about 4 months and the guy I sold one to about the same, his I tooled a nice harley looking badge with the big wings on it and it still looks new just formed more to him. I think that these weight leathers will last a good long time riding in someones pocket. -
Must say the overall finished project turned out very cool looking. You did a great job on this huge project.

Good looking work, only critique Ive got is work on the lettering, I cant do any better but thats about the only thing I could see needs improvement. I have gotta practice mine as well, really wish I could attend a Peter Main class where he teaches how to do that stuff.

Very nicely done, great choice of liner color as well. -
Well my friend wanted a real belt and saw mine I made for myself so he said he wanted one. I asked what style he wanted and he said same as mine would be perfect. Well since I will probably make myself another different type pretty soon I figured why not. Anyways about the same as the last one I made, only difference was finished the edges a tad better, and tried some hemp string this time. Probably wont again, it was a little too big for my liking on this project but still had a decent finish. Strong stuff though. Front is 7oz or so and back is about 4oz. Buckles on him though lol.

Well been busy and working on my moto seat I havnt had time for much else. Got this simpler rifle sling finished. Have another nicer one with some floral design in it but not finished yet so no pics. About 8oz overall with suede liner and neoprene padding.

Bearman makes some aewsome stuff. I totally support ordering from him from past experience. On another note if you are half way inclinded to make some stuff, order some blanks (I got mine off ebay) and play around with making your own. Mine dont look half as nice as Ed's but it serves its purpose. I used a hax saw to get the shape, then a dremel with variouse bits to refine it to the shape I needed (I dont have a garage or many tools). Works far better then those plastic guys.

Good looking work, I really like the last one farthest to the right in last pic. -
Thanks for the compliments guys. It was alot of lacing. James its a trial and error thing for me. The hardest part imho is getting the shape of the seat correct and the padding right. Ive pulled the cover off so I can work on that since I took it on a few rides. If you stock foam is good and you like the ride then it is easier. Mine was horrible so I totally got rid of it. That and read the tutorials on the top of this forum, they were great help to me in building this.

Good looking sheath, looks like your a quick learner. Nice looking knife as well.

Well the whole reason I started leather craft about 2 yrs ago is now complete lol. Got into it wanting to do a seat for my scoot and finally started working on it a week or so ago. It could use some work but Im happy with my first results. The pan is stock, I removed the foam and put in neoprene and shaped it. The leather in the center is 7/8oz, the sides are 4/5oz and I used vinegaroon to color and finished with two coats of sno-seal and final of leather balm with atom wax. The leather wasnt the greatest as I wanted to use up some older cheaper leather that I had that wasnt really fit for doing work for customers. The main issues I had were getting the lacing correctly shaped, this was my first round braid. I thought it turned out pretty good except where the leather joined in a few sections it would double over or I would pull it to tight I think. Probably would have turned out far better if I was joining two pieces of leather of the same weight. Still I need much more practice and this was a good learning experience. It didnt line up perfectly which is kind of annoying and my wet forming could use a little work but overall pretty happy, Wanna say thanks to everyone that posted tutorials and all the seat builders here who answered my many questions. Oh and thats alot of lace lol.

I bought one and used it on the blades once. Since then I never have had to go to anything courser then 1000grit and stropping. Honestly even with my minimal experience I can get a good angle by hand. I think if I ever move to stoning a blade I would use the jig though for that until I got to the finer sand paper and stropping then it goes in the knife and is done by hand. Thats just my experience though.

That is a way cool helmet cover man. Excellent job.

Just me personally but I wouldnt use any color on the edge. If you have not allready check out Hidepounders edge burnishing technique or something similer. Ditch the edgecoats and just use bees wax and some water or whatever final technique you come up with and it should give the edge a really nice slightly darker but still light edge. I think it would look pretty good. Just wanted to add heres this http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=16609 and Bobs attachment he posted somewhere on here and I forgot where. I would use the same technique that he does or similer to suit your needs and tools and just dont use dye. Well darn cant find his attachment so heres a right up on the same technique that someone else summed it all up with. edging bob park style.txt edging bob park style.txt

Excellent work Marlon, too bad you dont have some more pictures. Did you use dyes or acrylics or combo?

Thanks for the input guys. Appreciate it. Guess its one of those leathers that has its place if you know what to use it for.

I usually cant resist getting one or two when they have them on sale like this. Im usually very impressed with the amount of usuable leather, the grain sides are usually pretty clean. For the price its a good deal. The only issue that Ive had is the flesh side pulls up horribly bad. Sometimes it looks like a whooly mammoth or something. You can sand it smooth though if needbe. Still I find for imports its not bad at all for that price.

Prepping a tool bag for a Life Outsidfe

In my case and its not very experienced so take it with a grain of salt but what I do is dye, oil with neats foot. Once that has dried overnight I will put on a few coats of leatherbalm with atom wax. After that has dried for overnight (I usually do a couple of coats, let it dry about 10min between coats then buff and apply, letting it sit over night really cures it good). Then as a final coat I like sno-seal, from what I gather its similer to picards. Kind of like a thin soft wax, rub that in real good and let it sit up for a while. This stuff if the item is outside holds up pretty good and can be reapplyed by a customer. Just make sure its being used, if its sitting in the garage he wont need to reapply but once a year. -

With holsters Ive heard of alot dip dying there holsters, you may try asking this question in the holster section not sure if alot of those guys read other sections to often. Also do a search in that section, there have been many discussions on dying holsters. -
Excellent work, that skull set is pretty cool. I really like that first gator inlay, dont know exactly why but it just seems attractive.
